Monday’s always come around so quickly, don’t they… We’re back with another Motivation Monday story!
In these Motivation Monday articles, we’re asking a series of questions to get an idea about how people approach their Slimming World journey, what obstacles they’ve faced, and how this has changed their life for the better.
This week we’re bringing you a Motivation Monday story from Janie. You might recognise her name, if not her face, from the Pinch Of Nom website and Facebook group.
Janie is 47 years old, and is married with two teenage daughters. Janie has been following Slimming World for a number of years.
With a setback in health and putting some weight back on, Janie has bounced back and managed to achieve her target weight and become a Target member of Slimming World!
Janie was kind enough to answer some questions regarding her Slimming World journey, to give us a better idea of how setbacks can be conquered when Food Optimising.
When did you decide that enough was enough and you wanted start following Slimming World?
I first began Slimming World in November 2011. My two children were growing up and I finally faced up to the fact that I could no longer blame pregnancy weight gain. How could I?
My youngest daughter was now 6! Two friends had been toying with the idea, so we all decided we’d bite the bullet and attend a Slimming World group together.
7 weeks into my journey, I achieved my Club 10 award, losing 10% of my starting weight. After a few months, the friends I’d attended with had both stopped for personal reasons, but I plodded on.
By July of the following year I hit my target, with a 5 stone loss. I was nominated as Woman of the Year at my group and won. Then I went on to Regional finals, where I had a great day out and heard some amazing, inspirational stories.
I reset my goal slightly higher, as I’d been struggling to stay in my target zone, then maintained my goal weight for a couple of years.
Unfortunately, a health setback led to an unsettled time for me. I was on steroids, had limited mobility and was off work. I turned into a couch potato, comfort eating because I was bored and miserable.
The net result of this was that I regained the weight I’d lost…with interest! I was lucky enough to make a pretty full recovery, and after a heart-to-heart with my closest friend, she persuaded me to rejoin Slimming World.
Did anyone influence you to start following Slimming World?
My lovely friend, Emma, persuaded me to start with Slimming World again in March 2016.
She’d witnessed my success the first time around, so she knew it was possible. We both wanted to give each other moral support.
How did your first week go following the plan? Any surprises?
We decided to start at a different group to the one I’d attended previously, for a real ‘Fresh Start’.
My friend had looked up the venue online, (a church hall) so we pulled into the car park, took a deep breath and walked in. We were greeted by a karate class!
It took a few moments to realise that we were at the wrong church! A quick check with Google Maps confirmed this, so we got back into the car and eventually found the right place.
After weighing in at my first meeting at my heaviest weight ever, I knew I had to make a go of this. My first week went well, and I stepped off the scales the following week with a 4 and a 1/2 lb loss.
It took me 5 weeks to lose my first stone, and 15 weeks to lose 2 stones. My weekly losses (and the odd gain!) have usually been a lb or two each week, sometimes less, occasionally more.
How much have you lost in total, and how long has this taken?
I reached the target I’d set for myself of a 5 stone loss last October, but reset slightly lower a few weeks ago and achieved my final target of 5 and a 1/2 stones this week!
In total, it’s taken just short of 2 years.
What was the reaction from friends and family when they started to notice you losing weight and following Slimming World?
I get lots of lovely comments and compliments.
People are genuinely pleased for me and lots of them ask how I’ve done it! My children, now both teenagers, are proud of me, which is lovely.
Bumping into people you haven’t seen for a while is amazing, the reactions are so good.
What’s the one thing about Slimming World you wish you knew before you started?
I think the biggest thing I wish I’d known was how easy it is!
The Slimming World plan is a lifestyle change, not a strict diet. I’ve loved cooking meals from scratch again, using fresh ingredients, rather than relying on something from a jar, or a ready meal.
The plan really isn’t complicated, once you’ve taken time to read it and understand how it works.
How has joining the Pinch of Nom facebook group and other social medias helped you with your Slimming World journey?
Joining Pinch of Nom has quite literally changed my life! I’m lucky enough to actually work for Pinch of Nom now, which means I live, breathe, eat (and occasionally sleep) recipes, questions, Syn values and Healthy Extras!
The Pinch of Nom Website is my go-to resource for recipes and inspiration.
Having a Slimming World themed job certainly helps you to stay focused, and being involved with the Pinch of Nom website and Facebook group keeps me bang up to date with the latest news and information.
What’s your favourite Pinch of Nom recipe, why do you like it so much?
That’s a tricky one! I try every new recipe that is published on the website!
I’ll always love the Syn Free Chilli Cheesy Nachos though, because it just tastes SO indulgent and naughty, but it’s Syn Free!!
What has been your favourite non-scale victory?
I think that has to be walking past a mirror or a shop window and actually liking what I see.
I’m still self-conscious, and prefer to take photos rather than pose for them, but I don’t usually hide if someone does take my picture these days. (Unless I’m having a really bad hair day!)
Lastly, what affect has joining Slimming World had on your life?
I’m healthier and happier, I have a new job and some amazing work colleagues, all thanks to Slimming World and Pinch of Nom!
