Slimming World recommend having 1/3 Speed Food with every meal where appropriate as part of the Extra Easy plan.
If you’re not sure whether your fruit and vegetable choices are Speed Foods, you can check our Speed Foods list. Items listed in blue are linked to a recipe, too. Just click on the word to take you there.
We check the supermarkets and food websites every week to find a selection of new products and special offers to help you stay on plan with Slimming World.
Sainsbury’s Orchard Fruit Salad
We all know that fruit and vegetables are an important part of healthy eating. If I’m out and about and feeling peckish, I often grab a pot of fruit. The combinations vary massively, so you can usually find a mix of fruit that suits you.
This new Orchard Fruit Salad contains a mix of apple, pear, plum and blackberry, so they’re all on the Speed foods list. Bonus! You’ll find it with the prepared fruit and vegetables in the chilled section.
Half of this 240g pack counts as one of your 5-a-day. It costs £2.00 in Sainsbury’s.
Aldi Super 6
Every week we include a selection from one of the budget supermarkets, and this week we’re looking at Aldi’s Super 6.
It’s a great way to fill up your trolley with fruit and veg that will save you pounds in your wallet whilst helping you to shed the pounds. The selection from Aldi changes fortnightly, so there’s always something new to try.
This week the selection includes a mix of free and speed foods;
- Persimmon – also known as sharon fruit, eaten the same way as an apple
- Loose Mangoes – great for a fruit salad
- Kiwi Fruit – try making our Syn Free Fruit Christmas Tree
- Bananas – make these Low Syn Banana & Chocolate Pancakes
- Seasonal Pears – perfect for 3.5 Syn a slice Pear & Almond cake
- Royal Gala apples – great for grab and go snacking
Prices range from 65p to 85p per pack, available while stocks last from Aldi stores.
Wicked Kitchen Boom’n Butternut Curry
We have featured some of these in previous Shopping Essentials articles. Tesco Wicked Kitchen vegetarian meals are a delicious option and there are more products being added to the range all the time.
Boom’n Butternut Curry is one of the more recent additions, so I decided to check out the nutritional information. The traffic light system is a pretty good indicator to start you off, especially if you can’t check on Syns Online while you’re out.
This curry contains cooked rice with chickpeas and curry sauce, chargrilled butternut squash, courgette and tenderstem broccoli, with lime wedge, coriander and chilli. It’s suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
This product doesn’t appear on the app yet, so I’ve used the Syns Estimator to calculate the Syns information. It works out at 5.5 Syns per pack and costs £4.50 from Tesco. You can find it here, on the Tesco website.
Wicked Kitchen BBQ Butternut Mac
Whilst I cruised the aisles in Tesco this week, I also spotted this Wicked Kitchen BBQ Butternut Mac. As you may have noticed yourselves, there is an ever-increasing selection of vegetarian and vegan products appearing on supermarket shelves.
BBQ Butternut Mac is cooked macaroni pasta in a butternut squash with coconut oil and soya alternative to cream cheese sauce, with roasted red cabbage, cooked mushrooms in barbecue flavour sauce, topped with parsley.
With the Christmas season well and truly upon us, the topic of party food and buffets has come up plenty of times in our Facebook group. It’s a real danger zone for those of us trying to stick to plan, so knowing the Syn value of foods is a big help.
There are Christmas taster sessions being held in groups up and down the land in the next week or two. If you’re stuck for ideas, why not have a look at our Christmas Tasters article on the website. Packed with a great selection of sweet and savoury ideas.
Mediterranean Magic Appeteasers are a combination of soft cheese with sun ripened vegetables & tasty spices reminiscent of rich mediterranean cuisine. They are on the Syns online database at 1 Syn each.
The Pesto Passion variety has pesto flavoured cream cheese, with herbs, seeds, chives, peppers, carrots, shallots and garlic. These aren’t on the app yet, but work out at 1 Syn each using the Syns Estimator.
Adzuki (or aduki) beans are a protein food, as well as being free, so they’re great to include in meals when you are following any kind of healthy eating plan. They are ideal for adding to our Syn Free Chilli.
I’ve used them in our fabulous Syn Free Enchilada Lasagne, as an alternative to red kidney beans. They would also be brilliant in this souper-duper recipe for Syn Free Cajun Red Bean, Chick Pea and Tomato Soup. Perfect in this weather – Nom!
Nando’s Peri Peri Bag & Bake
We all love Nando’s, don’t we?! Here at Pinch of Nom we certainly do, so we came up with some fakeaway recipes to recreate that taste of Nando’s at home, but with fewer Syns.
If you don’t mind spending a few Syns from your allowance, you could try these Nando’s Peri Peri Bag and Bake sachets. The pack contains a parchment bag and a sachet of spices. You’ll get four servings per pack.
You add 4 chicken breasts to the bag, fold to seal and shake to distribute the spices, then cook in the oven. Once cooked, coat the chicken in the juices from the bag and serve! Available in 3 flavours;
- Medium – 2.5 Syns per sachet
- Hot – 3 Syns per sachet
- Lemon & Herb – 3.5 Syns per sachet
These are available from most supermarkets, but are currently on offer in Sainsbury’s, priced at £1.00, instead of the usual £1.20 per pack.
Tesco Smoked Salmon
We have a little saying here at Pinch of Nom, ‘If it swims, it slims!’ Fish is a fantastic protein source and a free food, so we love it and include it in meal plans a couple of times each week.
Smoked Salmon always feels very indulgent and a real treat. I’m planning on serving it as an appetiser for Christmas day, with a side of salad leaves and beetroot salad. It’s a great combination, and the Tesco chilled beetroot salad is free on the database, so that’s even better!
I picked up some of this smoked salmon and shoved it straight into the freezer, as it’s currently on offer at 3 x 120g packs for £10.00, saving you 50p per pack! You can find it here, on the Tesco website. (If you’re wondering, the Tesco beetroot salad can be found here!)
Franks Red Hot Sauce
We are big fans of Franks! It’s one of our favourite hot sauces, made from cayenne peppers, so it has a real kick. We use it in so many of our recipes to add flavour, including our famous Syn Free Campfire Stew.
We get asked regularly about where you can buy Franks Red Hot Sauce, so I thought it was a good idea to pop it in our Shopping Essentials round up. It’s stocked in larger supermarkets, usually priced at around £1.50 for a 148ml bottle.
Franks Hot Sauce is currently on offer in Sainsbury’s, priced at just £1.00 per bottle. It’s listed on the Syns Online database at 1 Syn per tablespoon, but you’ll only need a few drops!
Skinny Cow Mint Double Choc ice creams
After all the heat from Frank and his hot sauce, we need to cool down a little bit! There’s no better way to chill than with some ice cream. As you’ll probably know, 2018 has been the year for reduced calorie ice creams.
We’ve seen the launch of several low calorie ice cream brands this year, from Halo Top and Breyers, to Ben & Jerry’s Moo-phoria. There have also been versions of mini Vienna on a stick from Iceland and many more!
The Skinny Cow range has been around for a while, but they’ve improved the recipe, so we’ve included them in this week’s Shopping Essentials list. They are currently listed on Syns Online at 6 Syns per ice cream lolly.
Tesco Festive Mini Gingerbread Biscuits
I couldn’t avoid the seasonal aisle as I browsed the supermarkets this week, so I focused on finding treats that weren’t completely prohibited. I’m as aware as anyone that the next couple of weeks are going to be tricky to negotiate, but I’m not going to deny myself completely!
If you enjoy baking and love ginger, why not make these 1.5 Syn Gingerbread Bites! They taste fab and look really pretty too. A lovely addition to the Christmas table.
These Tesco Festive Mini Gingerbread biscuits are really good, a decent thickness so you feel as though you’re getting your money’s worth. They are baked with golden syrup, so they have a sweet finish along with the warmth of the ginger. Totally delicious…you can take my word for it!
Cadbury Reindeer Cakes
I found these cute little Cadbury Reindeer Cakes in Tesco this week. Chocolate flavoured sponge layered with a white chocolate flavour filling, covered in milk chocolate and finished with a white chocolate decoration.
Cadbury Reindeer Cakes are listed on the Syns Online database at 7.5 Syns per cake, so you can certainly have one and stay within your Syns allowance for the day. If you love chocolate but would prefer to use fewer Syns, try these Low Syn Chocolate Crispy Christmas Puds instead!
Sainsbury’s Mini Éclairs
Last week we brought you a selection of frozen mini desserts from Asda that would be perfect for this time of year. This week I spotted some similar products in Sainsbury’s, so of course I’ve included them here.
These Sainsbury’s Mini Éclairs are filled with cream and covered in a chocolate ganache, in a perfectly-formed, bite sized mouthful of deliciousness. They work out at 2.5 Syns each using the snackulator on the Slimming World website.
A pack of 12 éclairs costs £1.00. You’ll find them in the frozen foods section of larger Sainsbury’s stores.
Sainsbury’s Mini Chocolate Melt in the Middle Brownies
I also found these little beauties this week. One of the Sainsbury’s party range of miniature frozen desserts, these Mini Chocolate Melt in the Middle Brownies sound soooo good!
I adore chocolate brownies, so I regularly make up a batch of these Low Syn Chocolate Brownies to keep my cravings at bay. If you haven’t made them before, you really should try them!
Sainsbury’s frozen Mini Chocolate Melt in the Middle Brownies have a chocolate sauce centre and can be pinged in the microwave for just 40 seconds. Deeelish! They work out at 3.5 Syns each on the snackulator and cost £2.50 for 12.
Sainsbury’s Mini New York Style Cheesecakes
We showed you some baked mini cheesecakes from Asda in last week’s Shopping Essentials list. All the supermarkets are bringing out their party foods as the Christmas season gets into full swing, aren’t they?
We love cheesecake, so we came up with our own Low Syn Mini Christmas Cheesecakes that are well worth making. I took them to my group’s Christmas taster session last year and they went down a storm!
This week I found these Mini New York Style Cheesecakes in Sainsbury’s. They are baked vanilla flavour cheesecakes on a digestive biscuit crumb base with a sweet dusting. Who could ask for more?! They cost £2.50 for a box of 12.
