Each week we search supermarkets and food websites to bring you a selection of new products and special offers to help you stay on plan with Slimming World.
Slimming World always recommend having 1/3 Speed Food with every meal as part of the Extra Easy plan. If you’re not sure whether your fruit and vegetable choices are Speed Foods, you can check our Speed Foods list.
Aldi Super 6 Fruit and Veg
We always try to find a good selection of Speed Foods to help you when following the Slimming World plan. Last week we featured wonky fruit from Morrisons, and this week we’re featuring the Aldi Super 6 Offer.
This week, the list includes;
- Sweetheart Cabbage – lovely with Syn Free Bacon, Onion and Potato Bake
- Cauliflower – Perfect for Syn Free Cauliflower and Broccoli Soup
- Sugar Snap Peas – Delicious in Half Syn Firecracker Chicken
- Carrots – Make our yummy Syn Free Coleslaw
- Chestnut Mushrooms – Use for the Syn Free Breakfast Bakes
- Jacket Potatoes – ideal to serve with Syn Free Chilli
As you can see, just a few simple vegetables can give you plenty of choice! The Aldi Super 6 are priced between 42p and 72p per pack.
Morrisons Sweetcorn In Water
Sweetcorn is a really tasty vegetable and I will forever be disappointed that it’s not a Speed food! Baby sweetcorn are Speed, but sweetcorn is just free.
However, it’s a tasty and healthy vegetable that can still be enjoyed as part of the Slimming World plan.
Why don’t you try a can of sweetcorn in our fab new Syn Free Enchilada Lasagne recipe?! It’s soooo good! A winning combination of chilli and lasagne. Nom!
Morrisons have started selling this 4 pack of Sweetcorn kernels packed in water. They cost £1.72 for 4 x 198g cans.
Morrisons Market St Cauli Fried Rice
This was a new spot from Morrisons this week. It’s a blend of cauliflower rice, with spring onion, red pepper, carrot and a ginger and garlic seasoning.
It’s always good to find something a little bit different as a vegetable side dish. This could be a great choice if you’re looking for a low-carb choice. We have some more suggestions for vegetable alternatives here.
One of the reviews on Morrisons website suggests frying it with an egg to make a vegetable ‘fried rice’. Sounds good to me!
Morrisons Market St Cauli Fried Rice works out free using the Syns calculator. A 330g pot costs £1.50.
ASDA Butcher’s Selection 800g Beef Frying Steak
Frying steak is something I never get bored of! Sometimes I use it to just throw a mixed grill together, and other times I’m a bit more imaginative.
One of my favourite go-to dishes is Low Syn Beef Stroganoff. It tastes amazing, but at just half a Syn per serving, it’s a real treat.
This 800g pack of frying steak costs £6.00 from Asda.
ASDA Butcher’s Selection British Turkey Extra Lean Mince
I’d never really thought about Turkey mince before I started Slimming World! Once the quest for 5% fat mince started, I was looking at every sort of mince I could find!
The typical fat content in this Butcher’s Selection British Turkey Extra Lean Mince is under 3%, so it’s free and a P food, too.
We often get asked in the Facebook group, ‘What can I make with mince?’ So we put together a compilation of our Top Slimming World Mince Recipes.
This turkey mince could be used in place of beef or pork mince in most recipes that use mince. It would be great in our Syn Free Dirty Fried Rice.
A 250g pack of Asda Butcher’s Selection Extra Lean Turkey Mince is priced at £2.25.
ASDA Oak Smoked Beef Brisket with BBQ Sauce
I love to cook meals from scratch for my family, and we have systematically worked our way through many of the recipes from the Pinch of Nom website.
One of our favourites is this Syn Free Campfire Stew – a delicious recipe that uses gammon and speed vegetables in a smoky sauce.
There are occasions when I’m really pushed for time, and I’m looking for alternatives that are tasty and quick to prepare.
This Beef Brisket from Asda is oak smoked for flavour then cooked slowly for up to 7 hours until it’s fall-apart tender. It’s prepared with a sweet ‘n’ smoky marinade and served it up with a barbecue dip.
I adapted Asda’s serving suggestion to include a batch of Syn Free Rustic Potato Wedges, some corn on the cob and a pot of smoky bbq beans.
At 4 Syns for half the pack on the Syns calculator, this won’t dent your Syns allowance too badly! A 500g pack costs £4.50 from Asda.
Iceland 6 Chilli & Lime Prawn Skewers
With the forecasters promising us a warm weekend ahead, I spotted these prawn skewers in Iceland and thought they would be worth a look.
I think that anything on a skewer makes me think of barbecues and sunny days in the garden! Check out our Syn Free Chicken Gyros Kebabs or Syn Free Chicken Souvlaki and Tzatziki recipes for more summer ideas!
These skewers from Iceland are raw, peeled, tail on, marinated king prawns in a chilli and lime flavoured seasoning. They’re half a syn each using the syns calculator.
Tesco Chopped Thyme
These are basic ingredients that are freshly frozen for your convenience, just grab wht you need and put the rest back in the freezer for next time.
Cooks Ingredients are particularly useful if you like fresh herbs, as these are just as good, but will stay as fresh as the day they were picked. (Rather than going sad and limp in the vegetable drawer!)
This Frozen Chopped Thyme is ideal for our Syn Free Sausage Rolls, if you’re planning a picnic this weekend.
Morrisons Chilli Paste/Garlic Paste
If you love cooking with Garlic and Chilli, you’ll know that preparing them is a bit of a faff sometimes. There’s always a jar of each from the ‘Very Lazy’ range in my fridge for convenience.
Chilli and garlic pastes sold in a tube are usually in oil, so should be avoided if you want to save those hidden Syns. Very Lazy jars are preserved in white wine vinegar, rather than oil.
This week, I’ve spotted a new range from Morrisons, and these don’t have any oil either! They cost 80p per jar from Morrisons, and are both Syn free according to the Syns calculator.
Mama Instant Whole Grain Rice Vermicelli
You can pack it full of Speed vegetables, and to keep it light you could try making it with this Instant Wholegrain Rice Vermicelli, rather than noodles.
These are Instant Wholegrain Rice Vermicelli, gluten free and full of fibre. You’ll find them in Sainsbury’s, costing £1.50 for a 225g pack and they’re free on Syns Online.
Fuze Tea Peach and Hibiscus/Mango and Chamomile
From April 2018, a new ‘Sugar Tax’ has been introduced in the UK. If you’d like to read more about it, check out our article, ‘What Does The New Sugar Tax Mean For You?’
To comply with the ‘Sugar Tax’, many manufacturers have reformulated their drinks, and some have even created new products.
Fuze Tea is a new drink from Coca Cola, made with less sugar. It also ticks the trendy ‘Iced Tea’ box. It’s available in two flavours, Peach & Hibiscus and Mango & Chamomile.
Both flavours are low calorie, gluten free and suitable for vegetarians/vegans. They’re 2.5 Syns per 250ml serving, according the Syns Calculator.
You can find these in Asda, priced at £3.49 for 4 x 400ml.
J2O Spritz Apple Watermelon
Get the flags out…the sun is set to shine this week, at long last! If you’re looking for a refreshing drink that’s just a little bit different, have a look at these delicious new J20 drinks.
J20 Spritz is a delicious blend of apples and watermelons, with a dash of bubbles. If you’re planning a weekend in the garden but want to stay alcohol-free, this would be a great choice.
Why not serve it chilled and add some frozen berries for a delicious ‘mocktail’.
Teisseire 0% Passionfruit
Last May, we covered some of the Teisseire 0% Syrups in our Shopping Essentials article. Just as delicious as the sugary versions, they’re ideal to add a dash of flavour to drinks, or for using in some Low Syn, Summery cocktails.
Teisseire have added a new flavour to the range, 0% Passionfruit Syrup, which can be used as a drink in its own right, just dilute 1 part syrup to approximately 7 parts water. You could also add it to diet lemonade for a touch of fizz!
Teisseire 0% syrups are available from Sainsbury’s, priced at £3.00 for a 600ml bottle. All of the current flavours are listed on the Slimming World app as Syn Free, so we’re pretty sure this will be, too.
Echo Falls Summer Berries Vodka
The brand name ‘Echo Falls’ is synonymous with fruity wines and spritzers. Whilst browsing the supermarkets this week, I spotted this Summer Berries Vodka.
We have a super range of Slimming World friendly Summer cocktails and drinks on the website – have a look at them here!
Smirnoff Vodka Raspberry
My shorts are ready, and I’ve the cocktail ingredients too! Hopefully the weather forecasts are right and we’re in for a great weekend!
I’m already imagining the clinking of ice in my glass as I indulge in a cocktail or two. One of my favourites is this 4 Syn Raspberry Vodka Fizz Cocktail.
Smirnoff have produced a Raspberry Vodka, which is now available from Tesco. It works out at 3 Syns per 25mls, so you can enjoy a couple of these guilt free!
