🎄Christmas Edition 🎄
This week, we’re featuring foods that you’ll be enjoying over the festive period. By opting for supermarket own brand products, you’ll be able to save £s whilst hopefully losing lbs! We’ve chosen Tesco for our examples, but you’ll find similar products in most supermarkets.
With Christmas only a few days away, we’ve got some traditional Christmas fare, along with some amazing Pinch of Nom alternatives to help you stay on track. We have also included a few extra treats, as its Christmas!
Tesco Tomato & Basil Soup
We love soup! It’s a quick and easy meal option, full of flavour, warming and satisfying. The classic flavours of tomato & basil are combined in this delicious soup, which would be an option as a starter for your Christmas dinner.
Tesco fresh Tomato & Basil soup is 5.5 Syns per 300g, or half a pot, on the Syns Online database. Smooth and sweet tomato blend finished with basil and a hint of black pepper. A 600g pot costs £1.50 in Tesco. You can find it here, on the Tesco website.
How about making our Syn Free Tomato & Basil soup instead? You’ll be making a great saving on Syns here, so you can save them for something else! You could even make this in advance and freeze it to save time on Christmas day.
Tesco Carrot & Coriander Soup
Here’s another really tasty soup which would start your meal nicely. Carrot and coriander is another great combination, with the earthy sweetness of carrot and the fragrant warmth of coriander.
Tesco Carrot & Coriander Soup is available in the chilled section, near the ready meals. The recommended serving size is 300g, which works out at 5 Syns on the Syns Estimator.
Of course, we have a gorgeous Pinch of Nom recipe for Syn Free Carrot & Coriander soup on the website, which you can make beforehand. This freezes well, too! As it’s Syn free, you’d be saving yourself a few Syns for later.
Tesco Smooth Chicken Liver Paté
If you’d rather have something other that soup as a starter, stay with me, as we have some more options coming up!
The first of these option is Tesco Smooth Chicken Liver Paté. You could even make some wafer thin melba toasts to go with this, using wholemeal bread. Served with a little side salad, it’s a tasty way to start your meal.
This is listed on the Slimming World website as 4 Syns per 25g serving. Once again, it’s Pinch of Nom to the rescue, with our Syn Free Chicken Liver & Bacon Paté! What a fantastic Syn-saving way to start your Christmas lunch!
Bay Fishmongers King Prawns
We’ve covered soup and paté, but how about a classic prawn cocktail for your Christmas day starter? You’ll need some delicious, juicy king prawns and a seafood sauce. We found this pack of Bay Fishmongers King Prawns in Tesco this week.
At just £1.79 for a 150g, these king prawns are great value for money! Prawns are free food on Slimming World, they also get a P symbol, as they’re packed with protein. All you’ll need to add is the Seafood sauce.
Tesco Reduced Fat Seafood Sauce
To complete your prawn cocktail starter, you’ll need a seafood sauce, so we’ve found you this Tesco Reduced Fat Seafood Sauce. This would make one of the quickest and easiest options as a first course on Christmas day! Just add a few salad leaves and you’re good to go!
Tesco Reduced Fat Seafood Sauce is listed on Syns Online at 2.5 Syns per level tablespoon. Once again, we’re on a mission to save your Syns, so here’s our Syn Free Prawn Cocktail recipe for you!
Bay Fishmongers Smoked Salmon
I mentioned in last week’s Shopping Essentials that one of my go-to starter choices is a very simple serving of smoked salmon with beetroot salad. I bought some smoked salmon when it was on offer last week and chucked it in the freezer.
If you would like to stock up, Tesco are now selling this 300g pack of smoked salmon slices for just £5.00. I use the Tesco Beetroot Salad, as it’s listed as Syn free on the Slimming World database and the flavour compliments the salmon brilliantly.
Toad in the Hole Bites
Here’s something a little bit different that you could have as a starter on Christmas day, or even add to the buffet table. These Toad in the Hole bites are a fun-sized version of a family favourite.
Tesco Toad in the Hole Bites are listed on the Slimming World database for 1.5 Syns each. If you like this idea, you could try making your own using our Low Syn Toad in the Hole recipe, or adapting our Half Syn Mini Yorkshire Puddings recipe with some cocktail sausages!
You’ll find these Tesco Toad in the Hole bites with the Christmas party foods in Tesco right now, priced at £3.00, or you can buy as part of the 3 for 2 offer on selected party foods.
Tesco Pre-packed Vegetables
Whichever meat you choose to serve on Christmas day, the accompaniments and side dishes are just as important. A traditional roast turkey with all the trimmings will include a range of vegetables, so we’ve found some that are a bargain to share here.
Redmere Farms Brussels Sprouts
Love ’em or hate ’em, sprouts are a classic choice for a traditional Christmas dinner. As a child, I didn’t like them, but I’d have to have just one on my plate. Nowadays, I love sprouts and can’t get enough of them!
Our recipe for Marmite Sprouts would be a great way to serve sprouts with the Christmas turkey, or maybe with the leftovers on Boxing Day. They’re a seasonal, speedy choice for veg.
Redmere Farms Carrots
Carrots are an essential part of a roast dinner, so whether you’ll be tucking into turkey, or enjoying an alternative choice, make sure you’ve got plenty of them. Redmere Farms produce is exclusive to Tesco and offers great value for money.
Obviously carrots are a speed vegetable, so you can afford to pile them high! You can buy this 1 kg bag of carrots for just 29p, which is half the usual price. This offer applies until December 28th. You can find them here, on the Tesco website.
Redmere Farm Parsnips
Roast parsnips are one of the best things about a roast dinner! I love them, maybe even more than roast potatoes! They are a delicious addition to your plate, and really easy to prepare.
You have got to try our yummy recipe for Half Syn Honey Glazed Roast Parsnips to go with your roast dinner, they’re soooo tasty!
Tesco Redmere Farms Parsnips are also on sale as part of the seasonal vegetables offer, priced at 29p per 500g pack, a saving of 25p. The offer price is valid until 28.12.18. You can find them here, on the Tesco website.
Redmere Farms White Potatoes
Where would a roast dinner be without some golden roast potatoes? They are a must-have for the best Christmas dinner, and we have a delicious recipe for roasties right here! Make sure you prepare plenty of these Syn Free Roast Potatoes, as you can never have too many!
This 2.5kg bag of Redmere Farms white potatoes will only cost you 29p, which is better than half price! They will return to the usual price of £1.09 from 29.12.18. You can find them here, on the Tesco website.
Tesco Sage & Onion Stuffing Mix
You can’t have a Christmas lunch without stuffing! It goes so well with roast turkey and tastes fab, too. I always make extra stuffing so I can have it cold in a turkey sandwich the next day. You can’t beat Christmas leftovers!
If you’re trying to save a few Syns here and there, you should try our Syn Free Sage & Onion Stuffing.
Bisto Turkey Gravy Granules
You can’t have a roast dinner without gravy, can you, so we’ve had to include some here. Bisto has been a household name in gravy since the first Bisto meat flavoured gravy product was sold in 1908.
Gravy granules as we know them were first introduced in 1979, as a quick and convenient way to make gravy for meals. Bisto Turkey Gravy Granules are listed on Syns Online as 1 Syn per level teaspoon of dry granules.
We have a Syn free gravy on the website if you fancy making your own. The Bisto Turkey Gravy Granules cost 75p from Tesco at the moment. (Usual price £1.35, so you’re saving 60p.) You can find it here, on the Tesco website.
Tesco Profiterole stack
Once you’ve let your lunch go down, thoughts inevitably turn to desserts. After a heavy roast dinner, I prefer something a little lighter, and I’m not a fan of Christmas pud anyway, so I always look for an alternative.
Profiteroles fit the bill perfectly, with their light and airy choux pastry, whipped creamy filling and indulgent chocolate sauce. We have our own version of Low Syn Profiteroles on the Pinch of Nom website.
The Tesco 32 Profiterole Stack works out at 14 Syns for a 70g serving using the Syns Estimator on the Slimming World website. It costs £6.00 for the pack in-store and it’s also available here, on the Tesco website.
I’ve often wondered why shops only tend to stock mince pies at Christmas time. The original story behind them has a religious connotation, but they taste good enough to eat anytime! (Although, for the sake of my waistline, it’s probably just as well that they’re not so easily found for the rest of the year!)
These Tesco Mince Pies, with a butter-enriched pastry, come in at 10.5 Syns each using the Syns Estimator. They cost £1.00 per box of 6, or you can buy 2 boxes for £1.50. You’ll find them here, on the Tesco website.
If you love mince pies, but can’t spare that many Syns, our Mince Pies are just 2 Syns each!
For 2.5 Syns each, you can enjoy a proper puff pastry Mini Mince Pie Pasties. Winning at life! Using light puff pastry, you can still enjoy the proper taste of Christmassy mince pies and stay on plan!
Tesco Brandy Sauce
If you’re going to have mince pies, it would be bad manners not to have brandy sauce, too. This pot of fresh, chilled brandy sauce is available from Tesco as part of their seasonal range of food and drinks.
It doesn’t appear on the Slimming World database, so using the Syns Estimator it comes out at 3 Syns per 30g serving, which is 2 tablespoons. Here at Pinch of Nom, we have our own recipe for Brandy Sauce which is 1.5 Syns per serving, saving those precious Syns.
Aldi Frangipane Mince Pies
I popped into Aldi to try and find a few of the more indulgent items for this week’s shopping list and I wasn’t disappointed. First up were these Aldi Frangipane Mince Pies.
They are a delicious combination of a classic mince pie, but they have an almond sponge topping instead of the traditional pastry top. Absolutely delicious! These work out at 9.5 Syns each using the Syns estimator tool on the Slimming World website.
A box of 6 Aldi Specially Selected Frangipane Mince Pies costs £1.99 from Aldi stores, while stocks last.
Aldi Stollen Bites
Stollen is a bread like cake filled with fruit and nuts, and usually has a marzipan filling. These Aldi Stollen Bites also have a touch of Black Forest Cherry Kirsch for an extra luxurious treat.
These work out at 4 Syns each when the nutritional information is put through the Syns Estimator. There are 10 Stollen Bites in a pack, which costs £2.79 in Aldi stores while stocks last.
Aldi Specially Selected Christmas Ice Cream
This range of Specially Selected Christmas Ice cream flavours caught my eye last week. They are labelled as Christmas flavours, which makes them perfect for inclusion in this week’s shopping article!
2018 has been the year of low Syn ice creams, such as Breyers and Halo Top. These Aldi Specially Selected flavours are not low Syn, but as it’s Christmas we’re including them here!
The first flavour is Indulgent Mince Pie Ice Cream, with a swirl of festive fruit conserve and a brandy sauce core. I bought it to try last week and it’s deeelish! It works out at 9.5 Syns per 77g serving, using the Syns Estimator on the Slimming World website.
Next we have Gingerbread Latte Ice Cream, with a swirl of fudge pieces and a toffee sauce core. Using the Syns estimator, this one works out at 9 Syns per 74g serving. It sounds deliciously indulgent, but I didn’t dare to buy more than one flavour at a time!
The final choice is Espresso Martini flavour, rippled with an espresso vodka martini sauce. I haven’t tried this one yet, either, but I intend to buy some for the freezer before the Christmas break is over. When you put this through the Syns Estimator it works out at 6 Syns per 66g serving.
All flavours are sold in 480g tubs and cost £2.49 in Aldi Stores. As these are Christmas flavours, they’ll only be available while stocks last.
