Slimming World recommend having 1/3 Speed Food with every meal where appropriate as part of the Extra Easy plan.
We check the supermarkets and food websites every week to find a selection of new products and special offers to help you stay on plan with Slimming World.
This week I’m starting off with a few back-to-basics products. They’re not new, but they’re pretty good value, so definitely worth a mention.
Tesco Nightingale Farm Baby Plum Tomatoes
I go through loads of fresh tomatoes every week. They’re fab with a salad or just to snack on anytime.
These baby plum tomatoes are super sweet and tasty, I can eat them like grapes, and as they’re a speed food, it’s tomatoes for the win!
Tesco Nightingale Farm Baby Plum Tomatoes are 68p for a 250g bag, which is a great price.
Tesco Nightingale Farm Cherry Tomatoes
If you’d rather stick to a classic round shape, Tesco are also selling these Nightingale Farm Cherry Tomatoes.
Grown in the sunshine of Morocco, they have a yummy sweet flavour and are bursting with taste.
If you thought the baby plum tomatoes were good value, these are just 49p for a 250g bag. Bargain!
The long hot days of summer 2018 seem a distant memory already, so why not try our Syn Free Vegetable Tart recipe to take you back to the sunshine.
These Syn Free Vegetable Tarts are brilliant for a lunchtime dish, or a midweek supper. You can make them beforehand and reheat, too. Spot on!
Protein Food Shop Offer
They supply high quality, British, great tasting, free range, grass fed meats, including 28 day matured beef. The offer this week is as follows;
LUXE HAMPER – BRITISH – FREE RANGE – GRASS FED – 28 DAY MATURED BEEF

Tesco British Plums
When we first moved into our house, there was a beautiful Victoria plum tree at the top of the garden. At this time of year, we were given them away by the bucket load, as we had way too many to keep them all for ourselves.
Unfortunately, a few years down the line the plum tree died, so our plentiful supply dried up. I always look forward to autumn, when I can buy them in the shops.
You could substitute the fruit in this Low Syn Apple & Blackberry Crumble recipe for these plums and make a scrummy dessert!
Products such as cauliflower rice, broccoli rice, butternut squaffles and courgetti ribbons are all a great way to add extra speed food to your plate. I’ve always found the courgette ribbons to be a bit lacking in texture, so I’m not that keen.
This week I’ve found carrot spaghetti in Tesco. It doesn’t go slimy like the courgette ribbons, so it’s great to use as a spaghetti alternative if you’re trying to replace the pasta for vegetable alternatives.
Butternut Squash Stars
Butternut squash (BNS for short!) is a delicious way to add speed food to your meal. The most common complaint is that peeling and chopping can be quite hazardous!
My lazy solution is to chop it up, remove the seeds and roast it, skin on.
There are lots of recipes that use BNS on our website, such as this amazing Syn Free Butternut Squash Risotto. Absolutely gorgeous and so easy to make!
Of course, you’ll find butternut squash noodles and squaffles in several of the main supermarkets now. These stars are just a bit of fun to entertain you at mealtimes. You can roast, microwave cook or steam them.
Tesco Root Veg Medley
The Tesco Root Veg Medley is another of my ‘back-to-basics’ choices for this week. It’s a combination of vegetables that can be peeled and chopped, then chucked into a slow cooker with any choice of meat for a hearty stew.
Now that the weather is getting more autumnal, this is the sort of food I crave! This fabulous Syn Free Balsamic Slow Cooker Beef Stew is my favourite! Better still, the slow cooker takes the strain, leaving you free to get on with other activities!
You Say Potato Fresh Cut Chips
We first saw these a couple of months ago when someone shared them in the Facebook Group. They’ve taken a while to appear in Tesco supermarkets, but seem to be stocked in most large stores now and they’re on the website too!
Fresh cut chips have divided opinion in the Facebook group, with some people of the opinion that they’re a lazy choice and/or a waste of packaging. The flip-side to that argument has been that they’re obviously convenient and quick.
Another important point is that prepared products like these are a great help to those who may have manual dexterity issues and can’t manage to peel and chop vegetables. They’re great for these Syn Free Slimming World Chips.
Tesco Kiwi Berries
Kiwi Berries have been something of an enigma since they were first talked about in the Facebook group.
We featured them in a shopping article last year, but it’s not always easy to find them. They also have a very limited season.
They’re pretty much what they sound like, mini kiwi-fruits.
The fruit of the kiwi berry plant is similar to the familiar kiwi fruit, only its skin is smooth (not fuzzy) and the fruit itself is much smaller and sweeter, and less ‘gritty’ in texture.
Definitely free, but not speed. They’d be nice as a treat instead of a bunch of grapes.
Tesco Beetroot Burgers
There has been a real upsurge in the launch of new vegetarian products recently (More on this later – stay tuned!).
We always try to include some vegetarian choices in the Slimming World Shopping Essentials articles, so here’s another.
These Beetroot Burgers from Tesco join a long list of vegetable sausages and burgers that are now available.
These sound super tasty, made from chickpeas, beetroot, red quinoa, green lentils, gluten free oats, coriander, thyme and cumin burgers. Gluten free too, so an added bonus!
Tesco Wicked Kitchen
I mentioned above that there has been an increase in the number of vegetarian products that are arriving on supermarket shelves, but these are a new and exciting option.
A decent selection of vegetarian ready meals that are more than just pasta!
The range looks really good, with the majority being Vegan friendly too, which is brilliant!
From my observations, trawling the supermarkets each week looking for products, Vegans are not very well catered for, but these meals are a bit of a game changer!
The meals themselves look really appealing, packed with fresh ingredients that look very tempting indeed! They are all listed on the Syns Online database on the Slimming World website. The range includes;
- Nanas Mushroom Bolognese – 6.5 Syns per pack
- Muay Thai Curry – 6.5 Syns per pack
- Kung Fu Bowl – 5 Syns per pack
- BBQ Butternut Mac – 5.5 Syns per pack
- Naked Burrito – 2.5 Syns per pack
- BBQ Beans & Mash – 1.5 Syns per pack
- Wicked Teriyaki Noodles – 4.5 Syns per pack
- Curried Cauli, Onion Bhaji & Coconut Rice – 7.5 Syns per pack
As you can see, there’s a really good selection here, and some are very low in Syns too, which is a bonus! Just a word of caution though, avoid the pizzas and the wraps, as they are most definitely not low in Syns! You have been warned!
Genius Fibre Fest Wraps – New HEB choice
These were one of the new products I found almost by accident in Tesco on Tuesday! I always scour the shelves for the tell-tale blue tickets with ‘New’ displayed, but these were out of my eye-line and I nearly missed them!
I typed Genius Fibre Fest Wraps into the Slimming World app and was delighted to find out that they’re both listed as HEB choices. If you’d rather Syn them, they’re only 3.5 Syns each and they’re Gluten Free too!
There are two varieties, Kale and Beetroot, but before you panic, the vegetables are only used to add natural colour.
Tesco Red Chilli & Thai Basil Stir Fry Paste
When you are following the Slimming World plan, a stir-fry can be a quick and on-plan meal, with a selection of speed veg and meat of your choice.
I usually make our Syn Free Sweet Chilli Sauce to add to a basic stir fry. It’s soooo tasty! If you haven’t made it yet you need to try it soon!
This Tesco Red Chilli & Thai Basil Stir Fry paste is 3 Syns per 1/2 a pack using the Syns estimator on the SW website, so it won’t break the bank Syns-wise, but you’ll have a yummy, spicy Thai style stir fry.
Tesco Laksa Paste
This Laksa paste makes a rich and slightly spicy Malaysian inspired broth base with lemongrass, garlic and red chilli.
It’s usually made using shredded vegetables and noodles or rice vermicelli.
We have this recipe for Syn Free Ramen Noodle Bowls if you’d like to try something similar for yourself. This is just delicious and so fresh tasting!
Itsu Prawn Crackers
Back in February we featured the Wasabi flavoured prawn crackers from Itsu in our Shopping Essentials article. If you recognise the brand, we’ve also featured their noodle pots previously.
Now Itsu have added two new flavours to their prawn crackers range. Say hello to Sweet Chilli and Peking Duck flavours.
As we all know, the Slimming World plan gives us a Syns allowance each day. This is designed to stop you feeling deprived and enjoy something tasty whilst staying on plan. Whether you choose to use on extra treats, alcohol or cooking ingredients is up to you.
I tend to find if I use at least 10 Syns each day, my losses are more consistent. With this in mind, I’m happy to use some of my Syns on something to satisfy my sweet tooth!
The Maryland brand is well-known for choc chip cookie, but these are a bit different. Slightly posher, with extra ingredients! They come in two varieties;
- Raspberry & Choc Mash Up – Cookies containing dark chocolate chips, shortcake biscuit, raspberry pieces and rice crispies
- Toffee Popcorn Crunch – Cookies containing milk chocolate chunks, caramel pieces, light malt crispies and toffee popcorn
As you can probably tell with those ingredients, these cookies are not low in Syns. Having said that, both flavours are on the Slimming World database for 4.5 Syns, so you could easily afford to have one or two as part of your daily allowance!
Cadbury Crunchy Melts
Okay, I have to confess that this last choice really is a bit indulgent. These Cadbury Crunchy Melts cookies were winking at me from the shelf next door to the Maryland Wonders, so I had to check them out, didn’t I? Rude not to, really!
If you’d rather keep the Syns a bit lower for a chocolatey treat, why not try our 2 Syn Double Choc Chip Cookies for a yummy treat!
Just reading the description, ‘Crunchy chocolate chip cookies with a soft melting centre’, is enough to get you reaching for the Slimming World app. These are available in three different flavours and are listed on the SW database.
- Chocolate Centre Cookies – 6.5 Syns each
- Soft Centre Cookies – 6.5 Syns each
- Double Indulgence Cookies – 6 Syns each
We use a well-worn phrase as Slimming World-ers…’Nothing is banned if it’s Slimming World planned’. As long as you have the information about the Syns for whatever you choose, you really can’t go wrong.

Everything written here about the products is my own opinion. Syn values given are correct at time of writing but may not always be accurate.
