Slimming World recommend having 1/3 Speed Food with every meal where appropriate as part of the Extra Easy plan.
If you’re not sure whether your fruit and vegetable choices are Speed Foods, you can check our Speed Foods list. Items listed in blue are linked to a recipe, too. Just click on the word to take you there.
We check the supermarkets and food websites every week to find a selection of new products and special offers to help you stay on plan with Slimming World.
Morrisons Winter Roasting Vegetables
We love to find different ways to make veg more interesting, and roasted vegetables taste fabulous.
This tray of winter roasting vegetables contains a mix of carrot, parsnip, red onion and beetroot. Most importantly, that’s all, there’s no added oil, so this pack is Syn free.
The carrot, red onion and beetroot are all speed vegetables, and the parsnips are free food, so you won’t find any Syns here. Just a quick squirt with frylight and you’ve got a yummy side dish to serve with any dinner.
How about having these instead of your normal veg selection with this weekend’s Sunday roast? All you’ll need to do is make some of our Syn Free Gravy and Half Syn Mini Yorkshire Puddings for the perfectly on-plan plateful!
A 400g tray of these Winter Roasting Vegetables costs £1.50 from Morrisons.
Morrisons ‘Too Good to Waste’ Box
We have seen a lot of stories in the news about the amount of food that is thrown away by supermarkets and suppliers. Some of the larger supermarkets have been selling selection boxes of Wonky fruit and Vegetables.
We featured Morrisons Wonky veg boxes in one of our Shopping Essentials articles way back in October 2017! Basically, the Wonky fruit and veg are not perfectly shaped, but taste just as good. It’s what’s on the inside that counts!
Zoe, in our Facebook Group, shared a photo this week of these ‘Too Good To Waste’ boxes that are new to Morrisons. This is produce that, just like the wonky veg, is too good to be disposed of. Content will obviously vary according to what’s available.
Zoe said she’d picked up the 2 boxes shown in her photo for £1.00 each at 7.30am, but she added that the boxes had been replenished when she popped back into her local Morrisons at 5pm.
Keep your eyes peeled for these, they’re a great way to pick up fresh fruit and veg for less at just £1.00 per box, from Morrisons stores.
Lidl Pick of the Week
Our weekly round up usually includes a selection from one of the budget supermarkets. Both Lidl and Aldi have a weekly offer on a range of free and speed fruit and vegetables which are always good value.
This week we’ve got Lidl’s Pick of the Week for you;
- Closed Cup Mushrooms – ideal for this Low Syn Farfalloni Con Funghi
- Baby Leaf Spinach – superb in this stunning Saag Aloo recipe
- Medium Oranges – great as a speedy snack
- Cooked Beetroot – try our buffet friendly Beetroot & Mint Hummus
Prices range from 59p to 69p per pack. Offers available in Lidl stores from 6th December until 12th December, subject to availability.
Asda Sunshine Fruit Salad
When you’re following the Slimming World plan, eating fruit quickly becomes a habit. These individual pots of prepared fruit are a great way to stay on track if you’re out and about and get an attack of the munchies!
No need to waste your Syns on a bag of crisps or a chocolate bar when this pot of Sunshine Fruit Salad is full of free and speed fruit. This particular selection contains no melon, just pineapple and mango chunks, grapes and apple slices.
This 240g pot of Asda Sunshine Fruit Salad costs £1.50, and it even comes with a handy spork! (a spoon/fork combined)
Asda Sweet Chilli Diced Beetroot
We’re starting to see some Christmas query posts in the Facebook group. One of the common questions is about Christmas parties and buffet type foods. If you’re looking for fabulously Slimming World friendly tasters and party food, click here!
It’s good to remember the motto, ‘Nothing is banned if it’s Slimming World planned’, so as long as you’re aware of the Syns you can indulge and still have that choice power.
This beetroot salad has a sweet chilli marinade, which gives it a little kick. Of course, if you’d rather save your Syns, you could make your own version, using plain cooked beetroot and our Syn Free Sweet Chilli Sauce.
Asda Sweet Chilli Beetroot works out at 2.5 Syns per half pot, according to the Syns Estimator. It costs 75p for a 175g pot
Quorn Vegetarian Beef Steaks
If you are a regular follower of our Shopping Essentials guides, you’ll already know that we always try to include some non-meat alternatives for vegetarians. There is a greater demand than ever for meat-free options, and Quorn have always been a market leader.
From Quorn mince and meatballs, to sausages and vegetarian bacon, the range is always growing, offering more choices. These steaks are approved by the Vegetarian Society and they are listed as Free on Syns Online.
I found these in Asda, priced at £2.00 for a pack of 2 steaks. You can also find them in Morrisons, or you can order from Ocado.
Asda Slow Cook Beef Casserole Meal Kit
Now that we’re into December, it’s an ideal time to dust off your slow cooker; if you haven’t already, that is! We have a fantastic section on the Pinch of Nom website full of slow cooker recipes that are so easy to prepare and super tasty, too.
This Slow Cook Beef Casserole Meal Kit from Asda is one of the simplest ideas ever. No prep at all, just open the bag, remove the sachet of seasoning and tip the frozen contents of the bag into your dish. Sprinkle seasoning over, add water and away you go!
The instructions on the pack are for a conventional oven, but this could easily be adapted for the slow cooker. You probably wouldn’t need to add as much water though, as the liquid won’t evaporate in the slow cooker.
This Slow Cook Beef Casserole Meal kit works out at 0.5 Syns per 1/4 pack (Estimated) and costs £5.50 for an 800g pack from Asda.
Cauli Rice with Broccoli
Cauliflower Rice is a popular choice for some people, particularly when you’re trying to eat fewer carbs. It’s a great alternative to rice, effectively helping to fill up your plate and your tum!
If you’re interested in more ideas to replace your pasta and rice with vegetable choices, take a look at our article on vegetable alternatives here. Veg rice can be served with many of our recipes, such as our scrummy Syn Free Cuban Beef.
It’s worth checking the nutritional labels and Syns Online if you’re buying vegetable rice. Some of these products, particularly frozen veg rice, can have additional oil, which will have an impact on Syn values.
Fullgreen Cauli Rice with Broccoli is listed as Free on Syns Online. There are only two ingredients listed, Cauliflower (60%) and Broccoli (40%) but this won’t be listed with an S symbol as it’s a branded food. It costs £1.99 from Asda.
Morrisons Veggies in Blankets
Supermarkets are bursting at the seams with Christmas speciality foods at this time of year. Many of the products that appear on the shelves look amazing, but they’re not exactly Slimming World friendly!
I could write a long list of the sorts of foods, but you’ll already know exactly what I’m talking about! Many foods are packaged in red/gold to give them shelf-appeal and tempt us, but try to resist if you can!
If you’re a vegetarian looking for ideas, Morrisons have some lovely options for your festive feast! I spotted these Veggies in Blankets earlier this week. They work out as 2 Syns each using the Syns Estimator on the Slimming World website.
Veggies in blankets are described as a blend of tomato, potato, mushroom and basil, wrapped in aubergine, They are suitable for vegetarians and vegans. A pack of 10 Veggies in Blankets costs £2.50, or you can buy them as part of a 3 for £6.00 offer.
Morrisons Vegetable Tartlets
If you need something different as a veggie option on the buffet table this Christmas, have a look at these! Morrisons Vegetable Tartlets are crisp Filo pastry cases, filled with sweet potato, red pepper & spring onion in a red Thai curry sauce.
These tartlets are suitable for vegetarians and vegans. They don’t appear on the Slimming World app. We have used the Syns Estimator to work them out at 1.5 Syns each.
Morrisons Vegetable Tartlets are suitable for home freezing. A pack of 9 tartlets costs £2.50 and they are also included in the buy 3 for £6.00 offer.
Asda Seaweed Peanut Crackers
I must admit I was intrigued when I saw these, so I had to bring some home for my family to sample. I’m not usually a savoury snacker, so I asked the family for their opinions, too and I got a thumbs up from everyone!
Whole peanuts, in a crisp corn shell, with a sweet/savoury flavour combination that’s really rather moreish! They work out at 6.5 Syns for 1/4 of a bag, using the Syns estimator online. A 125g bag costs £1.00 in Asda.
Asda Mini Eclairs Selection
We spotted these in the freezer at Asda this week and just couldn’t say no! I checked on the Syns Online app, but couldn’t find them, so I checked once I was back at home, using the nutritional information and the Syns Estimator.
These Asda Mini Eclairs come in three flavours;
- Hazelnut – 3.5 Syns each (all are estimated values)
- Lemon – 3.5 Syns each
- Raspberry – 3 Syns each
I’d happily save a few Syns to enjoy a couple of these. I’m sure they would satisfy the temptation for a delicious dessert! They cost £1.00 for a box of 12.
Asda Mini Baked Cheesecakes
We are seeing lots of very tempting products in the shops at this time of year. Provided you know the Syns information before you eat them, there’s no reason not to enjoy them!
Asda’s range of Frozen desserts look amazing, but fortunately, they’re not all horribly high in Syns. What about these Mini Baked Cheesecakes, don’t they look fab?! There are two flavours;
- New York Baked Cheesecake
- Belgian Chocolate Baked Cheesecake
They work out at 4 Syns per cheesecake on the Syns Estimator, which isn’t bad at all! We have some delicious cheesecake recipes on the Pinch of Nom website, which you’ll find here. A box of 12 mini baked cheesecakes costs £2.00
Asda Extra Special Mini Chocolate Puddings
Ive been watching the Masterchef series on BBC2 over the last few weeks. The chefs regularly make a chocolate fondant – a melt in the middle chocolate pudding that looks amazing!
I got quite excited when I found these Asda Mini Chocolate puddings at Asda, so I thought I’d investigate further. I got even more excited when I put the nutritional info through the Syns estimator. They have come out at 5.5 Syns each!
Indulgently rich sponges oozing with a Belgian chocolate centre and served with gold shimmer. They cost £3.00 for a box of 9 mini puddings from Asda stores.
Iceland Lemon Meringue Ice Cream Cups
Our final treat this week comes from Iceland. These Lemon Meringue Ice Cream Cups were spotted by one of our moderators, Jill. Lemon ice cream, with lemon sauce, on a biscuit crumb base, topped with meringue…that’s my kind of dessert!
We’ve used the Syns Estimator to calculate the Syn values for these. They work out at 8 Syns each, so they can still be enjoyed within your Syns allowance.
Iceland Create Your Own Hamper Kit
Over in the Facebook group, we have had several members asking about ideas to make a Slimming World friendly hamper. It’s a great idea, and one that would be warmly received by anyone following the SW plan.
Hampers are fun to put together, as you can tailor the contents to suit the person who will receive them. For someone who’s following Slimming World, this might include adding Syn values, so that they have all the information they need.
I spotted these at the beginning of the week. Iceland are selling a ‘Create Your Own Hamper’ Kit, which contains everything you need. A wicker basket, with packing material to arrange your selection on, and a bow to finish off.
Fallen off the wagon and need some motivation, or want to help others on their journey?
Our Facebook group is growing by the day. If you haven’t joined yet head over there and take a look. You wouldn’t want to miss out on the fun, would you?
You might just find the inspiration you need from our awesome members. If you’ve joined already why not invite any friends that may find it helpful?
I must stress the following…
Everything written here about the products is my own opinion. Syn values given are correct at time of writing but may not always be accurate.
Ideally, you should check with Slimming world for the most up to date Syn values using official resources such as; the Syns calculator, Syns Online on LifelineOnline or by calling the Syns Hotline on (0906) 851 8518.
