Tefal sent over an OptiGrill so we put our #GrillSkills into action and came up with these tasty alternatives to a takeaway kebab.

There are 295 calories in each portion of our slimming friendly Chicken Shawarma. This means it falls into our Everyday Light recipe category.
This recipe is perfect if you’re following a calorie controlled diet, and fits well with any one of the major diet plans such as Weight Watchers.
As a guide, an average man needs around 2,500kcal (10,500kJ) a day to maintain a healthy body weight. For an average woman, that figure is around 2,000kcal (8,400kJ) a day. How to make this Chicken Shawarma
This recipe is really easy to make in just a few steps. Here’s a summary;
- Add the spices to the chicken strips which have been sprayed with Low calorie cooking spray
- Cook using the OptiGrill
- Mix up the yoghurt dressing
- Place the chicken in a wrap with the salad garnish and dressing
- Serve with your choice of accompaniment from the list below

Do you need any special ingredients to make Chicken Shawarma?

We’ve used chicken breast for this recipe, but you could also use chicken thighs if you’d prefer – you will need to adjust the cooking times, and check the nutritional values of anything you change.
The spices in these wraps are spices that we use in loads of recipes, so it’s more than likely you’ll already have them. If you prefer them more or less spicy, you can add or leave out the chilli.
All of the ingredients are easy to pick up in the supermarket!
We cooked this on our Tefal OptiGrill, which senses how thick the meat is, and cooks it to your liking automatically.
Sounds a little too good to be true… right? That’s what we thought, but oh no – it makes it so much easier to cook meat.
We’ve made a few recipes using the Tefal Optigrill, and I can honestly say it has given perfect results each time.
It’s pretty damn impressive – which is not something we say often about anything!
It’s nice to not have to worry about ruining a really expensive steak, or a whole pack of chicken fillets, by overcooking them.
The Tefal Optigrill is also handy to use when you fancy grilled food, but don’t fancy getting the BBQ out. It’s proved particularly useful in this rather wet and windy June!
The bonus is that the Optigrill is ridiculously easy to clean. The plates come off, and are dishwasher safe.
Can you cook Chicken Shawarma another way?
Yes! You could cook the chicken for this recipe under the grill, in a frying pan, or on a barbecue.
OptiGrill: 10 minutes – see further instructions in the recipe card below
Grill/Barbecue: Use a moderately hot grill/barbecue and cook for 10-15 minutes, turning halfway through
Hob: Fry in a little Low calorie cooking spray on the hob for 10-15 minutes until the chicken is cooked through
How do you know when Chicken Shawarma is cooked?
You should cook this Chicken Shawarma until the chicken is cooked through and the juices run clear.
This should take approx 10 minutes in the OptiGrill.
Standard advice here in the UK is to cook food until it has reached 70°C and stayed at that temperature for 2 minutes. This is to keep your family safe.
How long can you keep Chicken Shawarma in the fridge?
Once you’ve served it, ideally you should eat this dish within 4 hours.
If you allow any left overs to cool, make sure to refrigerate in a container with a lid and chill. You can keep leftovers of Chicken Shawarma in the fridge for approximately 3 days or so.
Can I freeze Chicken Shawarma?
Yes you can! The cooked chicken from the recipe can be frozen, but please remember to do the following;
- Freeze it as soon as it is cold enough.
- Use a container or bag that is suitable for freezing.
Don’t forget to add a label with what it is, and on what date you put it in the freezer!
How do I reheat Chicken Shawarma?
You can reheat the chicken part of this recipe by place on a microwaveable plate and microwaving for 4-5 minutes until piping hot.
