Samosas - Pinch of Nom Slimming Recipes

For the full list of ingredients and comprehensive instructions, please see the recipe card at the end of this post. Before you scroll, there’s important stuff to know in the blurb!

We love an Indian takeaway, but it’s just not the same without those little extra sides. These Samosas are a slimming friendly alternative to the calorific dishes that you can find in your local takeaway.

This recipe uses filo which is a great alternative to other pastries as it really reduces the number of calories. It’s important to work quickly when using filo pastry as otherwise it may dry out and be unworkable – speed is of the essence!

We love these Samosas served alongside a beautifully rich, creamy curry but they also work really well as part of a buffet.

What diets are these Samosas suitable for?

This Samosas recipe is suitable for vegetarian diets.

It can be made gluten free as long as you swap out the following ingredients for gluten free versions;

  • Filo pastry

This recipe should also be vegan and dairy free, but this does depend on the following ingredients;

  • Filo pastry (most brands are vegan, but please double check as ingredients can vary)

Please make sure to double or triple check all of your ingredients if you’re cooking for people with allergies.

Hints & Tips

Below we added some of our communities most common hints and tips. We hope you find them useful.

You will have some filling left over.
I would suggest using the left over filling as a side dish to your Indian meal.
Little time consuming but worth every bit!
We cooked the samosa in the air fryer for 5 mins
Delicious 😋
I used tortilla wraps instead of pastry! They are so nice, I had them with mushy pea curry.
Leftovers?
I put leftover filling in a wrap with grated cheese and popped it in the microwave for a couple of minutes. Tasty, quick leftover lunch!

How do you know when these Samosas are cooked?

You’ll need to bake these Samosas for around 20 minutes or until they’re golden brown.

Standard advice here in the UK is to cook food until it has reached 70°C and stayed at that temperature for 2 minutes. This is to keep your family safe.

How long can you keep these Samosas in the fridge?

Can I freeze these Samosas?

Yes you can! This recipe can be frozen, but please remember to do the following;

  • Freeze it as soon as it is cold enough.
  • Use a container or bag that is suitable for freezing.

Don’t forget to add a label with what it is, and on what date you put it in the freezer!

How do I reheat these Samosas?

From chilled: Pop them in a moderately hot oven and heat until piping hot throughout. This should take around 20 – 25 minutes, but do keep an eye on them to make sure they don’t burn!

From frozen: Allow to defrost, then as above.

I think l I have seen a recipe for samosas using wraps? I am finding it impossible to source filo so would wraps make a suitable alternative as flaky pastry would be too high in farts?

Reply

    HollyWednesday 15th September 2021

    Hey Linda, you could adapt this recipe to use wraps. If you cut your tortilla into two and use each half to make a little triangle samosa. it will alter the calories but have a look at our handy guide HERE, hope that helps!

Hi there, is it 147 calories for 4 samosas?

Reply

    HollySunday 31st January 2021

    Hi Callum, this recipe serves 4 and makes 4 samosas so the nutritional information is for 1 samosa. Hope that helps!

How long do I need to microwave the potatoes please?

Reply

    HollyThursday 2nd July 2020

    Hi Zanna, give the potatoes a stab and microwave them for a couple of minutes, if they need longer pop them in again it all depends on the wattage of your microwave. You just want them to soften as they will continue to cook in the pan and then in the oven. Hope that helps!

Is there a way to make a meat version that’s still low on the calories?

Reply

    LisaTuesday 2nd June 2020

    Hi Kris. We don’t have a recipe for meat samosas at present, but you could adapt this recipe and replace some of the potato and peas with extra lean beef or turkey mince. Let us know if you try it!

Thanks.

I made these and so easily, for a group of very hungry, fussy ( weight conscious) teens… And they loved them…they thought I’d bought them from the supermarket. Which to be fair, is a compliment on my cooking! ????

Hi, can you make these ahead and freeze? Could you then cook from frozen or would you have to defrost first? (Obviously if using stuff that hasn’t previously been frozen) thanks x

    KateFriday 10th February 2017

    Hi Faye
    We’ve no tried freezing them but you could probably cook them from frozen, as long as they aren’t too big. Defrosting them first should be fine too
