What you need to cook Soft Boiled Eggs

There are a few things you need to make Soft Boiled Eggs.

  • A decent saucepan with a lid (we have this set)
  • Large fresh eggs – make sure that you are using eggs that are several days old. Hard boiling freshly laid eggs often leads to eggs that can be difficult to peel.
  • Salt & pepper (I like to use Cornish Sea Salt flakes)
  • Boiling water

How to cook Soft Boiled Eggs

We’ve used large eggs so timings will vary slightly depending on the size – smaller eggs won’t take as long, and extra large eggs will take longer.

Step 1

Bring a pan of water to the boil, put the eggs in gently as you don’t want to crack them! It’s easier if you put them on a slotted spoon and lower them in.

Turn the heat down slightly so they are on a fast simmer. Set your timer for 6 minutes!

Step 2

While the eggs are cooking, fill a bowl with ice and water – set to one side.

Step 3

Once the 6 minutes are up, use a slotted spoon to remove the eggs from the pan and plunge them into the bowl of iced water. Leave them in the iced water for 30-40 seconds.

Step 4

Then peel the eggs carefully, making sure to keep dipping them in the water. It will help make the eggs easier to peel.
