We had a request from a couple of our readers after they’d tried some other recipes they’d found online which didn’t quite hit the mark. There’s nothing worse than spending time and money on a recipe that just doesn’t work!

It’s taken us a few attempts over a few weeks, but we think our Sweet Chilli Sauce is pretty damn good.

How do I make this Sweet Chilli Sauce?

This has to be one of our easiest recipes. It takes less than 15 minutes to make, and once it’s done you can keep it in an airtight jar in the fridge until you’re ready to use it. It will last about a week in the fridge. Here’s a summary;

  • First, mist a small pan with low calorie cooking spray, then cook off the garlic, shallot and chopped chilli until they have started to colour slightly and smell fragrant.

  • Pour in the white wine vinegar, then add the granulated sweetener, salt and tomato puree. Stir well and bring it to the boil.
  • Stir in the honey, allow to simmer for a minute then remove from the heat.
  • Add the Xanthan Gum a sprinkle at a time, whisking well after each addition. Continue adding and whisking until the sauce has thickened to the right consistency. Check the taste and add a little more sweetener if necessary.

  • Remove from the heat and allow to cool, then pour into a clean airtight jar or bottle and keep in the fridge until you’re ready to use.

We use a granulated sweetener that has the same weight and sweetness as sugar. If you are using a powdered sweetener, then please check how it compares to sugar. In some cases you’ll need to use less, as powdered sweeteners weigh less.

What will I need to make this Sweet Chilli Sauce?

First, you’ll need a fine grater. We used our new snazzy Deiss grater! It’s great (pardon the pun) for grating not only cheese, garlic, onions, ginger, anything really!

How fab is that?! Just be careful when you’re using it, you don’t want to Deiss with death (I’ll get my coat 😂).

You’ll also need some Xanthan Gum.

Xanthan Gum is a syn free thickener and works a bit like cornflour. You add it to a liquid, and it thickens but you only need to add a little!

When I say a little you use 1/4 tsp Xanthan gum in place of 1 tbsp cornflour.

You can grab Xanthan Gum in the free from aisle of any supermarket (it’s gluten free!), or you can grab it from Amazon.

Last but not least, if you don’t have a glass jar to store this you may want to grab something like this Kilner Clip Top Jar from Amazon.

  1. Hi, I have made this today but have had to add another tablespoon.of sweetener, the recipe states 1.5 tbsp but further down in blue you say it takes 2.5 which is correct.
