Who would have thought that you could eat chips on a diet?! Well, you can, and this recipe throws something even more exciting into the mix: flavoured sea salt!

There are so many options for flavoured salt that you could have a different flavour for every day of the week (don’t tell us you haven’t thought about it!) This recipe uses garlic salt but you can find onion salt, chilli salt, smoked salt…the list goes on.

And let’s not forget, chips are the most versatile of sides, and go with almost anything. The flavoured salt addition may help you find even more ways to enjoy them with new dishes!

This recipe uses Cornish sea salt on our chips because it comes in different flavours! Chilli, onion, garlic, even smoked salt – which just adds another dimension the chips. Seriously, try it! You can buy them on Amazon, so you have no excuse to spice up your chips.

How many calories are in these Chunky Chips?

This Chunky Chips is perfect if you’re following a calorie controlled diet, and fits well with any one of the major diet plans such as Weight Watchers.

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 200-210°C.

Step 2

Peel the potatoes and cut them into chunky chips (the chunkier the better).

Step 3

Place the potatoes in a pan and cover with boiling water, add a good pinch of salt.

Step 4

Bring back up to the boil and let it boil for 2 minutes.

Step 5

Drain the potatoes and place them in a large bowl.

Step 6

Spray generously with low calorie cooking spray and add a good pinch of garlic sea salt. Toss them in the bowl to make sure they are evenly coated, then repeat (spray, sprinkle and toss).

Step 7

Spray an oven tray with low calorie cooking spray then tip on the potatoes and spread them out evenly.

Step 8

Cook in oven for around 30 minutes. Halfway through cooking, flip the chips over so they colour evenly.

How do you know when Chunky Chips are cooked?

Cook in oven for around 30 minutes. Halfway through cooking flip the chips over, so they colour evenly but do not burn.

Standard advice here in the UK is to cook food until it has reached 70°C and stayed at that temperature for 2 minutes. This is to keep your family safe.

How long can you keep Chunky Chips in the fridge?

Once you’ve put it out, ideally you should eat it within 4 hours.

If you allow any leftovers to cool, make sure to refrigerate in a container with a lid and chill. You can keep leftovers of Chunky Chips in the fridge for approximately 3 days or so.

Can I freeze these Chunky Chips?

Yes you can! This recipe can be frozen after the par boiling stage, but please remember to do the following;

  • Par boil the potatoes
  • Freeze it as soon as it is cold enough.
  • Use a container or bag that is suitable for freezing.

Don’t forget to add a label with what it is, and on what date you put it in the freezer!

How do I reheat Chunky Chips?

From chilled: Place in a microwave proof container with loosely fitting lid and heat for 4-7 minutes until piping hot.
From frozen: Place on a baking tray in the oven at 200-210°C for 45-60 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 2 medium potatoes approx. 425g/15oz total
  • low calorie cooking spray
  • 2 pinches garlic salt
  • 1 pinch salt

LOVED making these tonight, so easy and delicious! But… any tips on making them crisper? Mine started to go a little soggy soon after I took them out of the oven. Did they need longer?
I mean, it’s not going to stop me making them again but I know the husband will whinge!

    Hey Sarah, make sure you spread the chips out in a single layer and give them a shake or turn halfway through so that you get a nice crisp on all sides, hope that helps!

Can you pay boil the chips lol them quickly in ice , pat dry and freeze them ( seperated).

Hi if using an air fryer do you still need to boil the chips beforehand?

    I usually make then quite slim and dont par boil them as they can crumble all over in the air fryer so just put straight in with the fry light and seasoning. Cook for 10 mins then leave to stand for 5 mins then cook another 5 mins to crisp up
