Polystyrene Cone

We’ve seen recipes use a carrot and an apple as the base, but we tried it and they’re not exactly sturdy. So we’ve gone with a polystyrene cone.

Don’t forget to wrap it in clingfilm before you use it – and yes, you can use them more than once!

Skewers

You need a skewer to pass through the centre to create the rod that your large melon/pineapple star will sit on.

Make sure to leave 3-4 inches so you can mount your large star. For the 25cm cone a 20cm skewer is sufficient.

Kale

Kale is the secret to making this Fruit Christmas Tree actually look like a Christmas tree.

It creates a nice base, so you can’t see the white cone. You could also use lettuce leaves, or even curly parsley. We like the look that kale gives, and it will last a while out of the fridge. No one likes a limp lettuce!

Star Cutters

To give the Fruit Christmas Tree some more Christmas cheer, we cut some stars out of melon slices. The best melons to use for this are cantaloupe (orange in colour) or galia (light yellow in colour).

Fruit

This Fruit Christmas Tree is designed to cope outside of the fridge for up to 4 hours if you need it.

We use fruit that won’t discolour or go soggy. We used strawberries, kiwi wedges, melon, grapes and segments from some easy peelers.

If you’re going to use apple, make sure to spray some lemon juice onto the wedges to stop them from going brown

You can get a polystyrene cone from Amazon (they’re ridiculously cheap!) and you can get them in a range of sizes too. Most of you will be content with a 25cm cone, but if you’re catering for a party you might want something a little bigger.

We used this star cutter set from Amazon, as it has all the cutters you need. Included is a large cutter for the large star to top the Fruit Christmas Tree – can’t really go without it!

How many calories are in this Fruit Christmas Tree?

See what others have to say

Irene GreenmanMonday 18th December 2017

I made this for a church Christmas lunch before I found your instructions – your ideas would have made it SOOOO much easier than just working from a picture on Pinterest. Cocktail sticks in a carrot were really hard to pull out. I didn’t think of using greens to fill in the spaces, either, but my effort was a real success and some even took pictures of it. It is surprising how many diabetics there are in any gathering and many of the children prefer fresh fruit than a traditional trifle.
Thanks for making it easier for anyone else making it.
