Ham and Mushroom Pizza Calzone - Pinch of Nom Slimming Recipes

For the full list of ingredients and comprehensive instructions, please see the recipe card at the end of this post. Before you scroll, there’s important stuff to know in the blurb!

Takeaway calzones are no doubt delicious, but full of extra grease and high in calories so they’re not great for a slimming diet like Weight Watchers.

These Ham and Mushroom Pizza Calzones are the perfect way to satisfy your appetite when you’re pining for pizza without blowing your diet! We use a surprising ingredient, a tortilla wrap, as it provides a firm, bread-like “dough” that’s super versatile and crisps up really well when baked in the oven.

Packed with Italian flavours and just enough gooey cheese to kill those cravings, this lighter version of the takeaway classic may well become preferable to the real thing!

What diet is this Ham and Mushroom Pizza Calzone suitable for?

This can easily be made gluten free by making sure you use a GF wrap. You can also enjoy this when following a dairy free diet, as long as you use a dairy free cheese.

Please make sure to double or triple check all of your ingredients if you’re cooking for people with allergies.

How many calories are in this Ham and Mushroom Pizza Calzone?

We worked this recipe out to be approximately 390 calories per calzone, which means it fits into our Everyday Light category, but as always, please double check any nutritional information yourself.

A small classic Pepperoni Feast from Pizza Hut clocks up 1,050 calories, so this is a really great swap!

This recipe is perfect if you’re following a calorie controlled diet and fits well with any one of the major diet plans such as Weight Watchers.

As a guide, an average man needs around 2,500kcal (10,500kJ) a day to maintain a healthy body weight. For an average woman, that figure is around 2,000kcal (8,400kJ) a day. Obviously, if your goal is to lose weight then you might want to adjust these slightly! You can read more about these recommendations on the NHS website.

Bake at 200°C for 10 to 15 minutes or until golden brown.

Standard advice here in the UK is to cook food until it has reached 70°C and stayed at that temperature for 2 minutes. This is to keep your family safe.

Once you’ve put it out, ideally you should eat it within 4 hours.

If you allow any leftovers to cool, make sure to refrigerate in a container with a lid and chill.  You can keep leftovers of Ham and Mushroom Pizza Calzone in the fridge for approximately 3 days or so.

Can I freeze these Ham and Mushroom Pizza Calzone?

We’ve not tried freezing them, but lots of people on our Facebook group have frozen our pasties, so there’s no reason why these Ham and Mushroom Pizza Calzone wouldn’t freeze well either, but please remember to do the following;

  • Freeze it as soon as it has cooled down completely.
  • Use an air-tight container or bag that is suitable for freezing.
  • Don’t forget to add a label with what it is, and on what date you put it in the freezer! Unless you fancy mystery food for dinner haha.

Just let them defrost, then pop them in the microwave to reheat. Or you could reheat them in the oven if you prefer, but be careful not to burn them.

Make sure they are piping hot before you eat them!

How do I reheat this Ham and Mushroom Pizza Calzone?

From chilled: Place in a microwave proof container with loosely fitting lid and heat for 4-7 minutes until piping hot.

From frozen: Allow to defrost, and heat covered in the microwave for 3-5 minutes then stir. Cook for a further 5-7 minutes until piping hot.

Can you switch the passata for tomato puree?

Reply

    CateFriday 31st May 2019

Passata is a bit thinner than tomato puree so you may want to add a little water if you are substituting :|)

Could you cook these the night before and just take them into work the next day and eat cold? We don’t have a microwave at present!

Made these for a food taster this evening and they were a hit, especially for our under sixteen member as they are struggling with packed lunches. I will definitely be making more of them.

Do you need to cook these and the pasties before you freeze them?

Reply

    Emma TMonday 11th September 2017

    Hi Michelle,

I would recommend cooking them first. If you pop some parchment between them before freezing, they’ll be easier to separate ????

I found these really nice but quite greasy when eating them tried flipping them over when cooking but still grease dripped out can you recommend anything to prevent this

Reply

    Emma TMonday 11th September 2017

    Hi Jayne,

I think it would depend on the cheese and ham you’ve used, or how much frylight you sprayed on your baking tray.

    Hope that helps!
