Being chefs, we’re big fans of home cooked meals, but, having said that, we’re also very aware that not everyone has the time, or facilities to cook from scratch.

Which is where convenience foods are a huge help!

There are lots of ready made soups out there, some are pretty high in Syns, some not so high, and others can even be used as your HEB!

Heinz Soup of the Day Fragrant Thai Carrot and Coconut is one of the latter.

We were ask by Heinz to try recreating their Heinz Soup of the Day Fragrant Thai Carrot and Coconut Soup, using the same ingredients and recipe, then compare the homemade version to the ready made carton, and rate each on the following: Time, no faff and Taste, but we’ll get to that later.

The Recipe

Heinz supplied us with the recipe we used to make our homemade version of the Heinz Soup of the Day Fragrant Thai Carrot and Coconut Soup. It’s the same recipe that they use!

Comparing the Two

The Syns

Probably the most important thing for those following Slimming World is the Syn value.

The recipe we made works out at 9.5 Syns for the whole lot, which works out at around 5 Syns per portion (approx 200ml).

As I mentioned above some ready made soups, like this Heinz Soup of the Day Fragrant Thai Carrot and Coconut Soup can be used as your HEB, so you’ll still have plenty of Syns leftover.

200ml of the Heinz Soup of the Day Frgrant Carrot and Coconut Soup counts as 1 x HEB. If you don’t want to use your HEB, the same amount will cost you 5 Syns.

One of the other Heinz Soup of the Day, the Chicken Parsnip & Rosemary, counts as your HEB for a 200g serving or 4 Syns.

The Ingredients

We’re big fans of using fresh ingredients, which is something that always concerns me with pre-made, cartons or tins of soup, but the Heinz Soup of the Day range are made with all natural ingredients, with no artificial colourings, preservatives or flavours.

They are also made with no added sugar, so if you’re trying to cut down then these are a good alternative to homemade.

Taste

The Homemade and ready made soups tasted pretty similar really, but purely for the fact that it was freshly made, and that we found the coconut flavour a bit more pronounced, the homemade version just pipped it for us.

I do have to say that it was very close, which if I’m honest was a bit of a surprise. We expected the homemade version to be far better.

No Faff

Needless to say, the ready made Heinz Soup of the Day Fragrant Thai Carrot and Coconut Soup won this one hands down!

With just 3 steps it couldn’t be easier to prepare….Open the carton, pour into a pan or bowl and heat it up. Job done!!

No peeling or chopping in sight.

Time

As I mentioned earlier, the instructions for the recipe stated 5 minutes prep time.
Now, I’m pretty nifty with a knife, but by the time I’d chopped all the veg and measured out the ingredients it was more like 20 minutes.

You can have the carton open and in a pan or in the microwave in less time than it takes to chop the carrots.

Convenience

Not everyone has the time to whip up a pan of fresh soup every day, so these cartons are ideal for a quick lunch at home, or to take to work if all you have to hand is a microwave.

The cartons can easily be stored in the cupboard for emergencies too.
