Do you need any special ingredients to make Apple Turnovers?

Nope! All the ingredients can be found in your supermarket.

We like to use Weight Watchers wraps as the “pastry” (you’ll be amazed at how “pastry-like” they are!) as they’re low in calories, but you can use whichever wraps you like.  Just check the nutritional values of whatever you do choose to use.

It’s important that you use cooking apples for this recipe. They cook very differently to eating apples which will often just break down when cooked. Keeping a bit of texture is important to the overall flavour of the recipe.

We tend to use a natural, granulated sweetener which weighs the same as sugar, and tastes really good! They do tend to cost a little more than the powdered type, lightweight sweetener, but because it’s a like-for-like weight with sugar you don’t need as much! There are several brands available in the supermarkets or online, such as Sukrin, Natvia or Canderel Sugarly.

We use Sukrin 1 which is an all-natural granulated stevia sweetener alternative to sugar with zero calories. You can grab Sukrin 1 over on Amazon UK. Sukrin 1 doesn’t have that strange after taste that a lot of artificial sweeteners do! It also shares the exact same sweetness and weight to sugar.

That being said you don’t have to use Sukrin – there are lots of other high quality granulated sweeteners available from the supermarket, such as Canderel Sugarly, and Natvia.

How do you know when these Apple Turnovers are cooked?

You’ll know the Apple Turnovers are ready after 10 minutes of baking at 200 degrees when they’re a lovely golden brown colour!

Standard advice here in the UK is to cook food until it has reached 70°C and stayed at that temperature for 2 minutes. This is to keep your family safe.

Can you cook these Apple Turnovers any other way?

You need to bake these tasty pastries in the oven. We use a microwave to cook the apples, but you could also cook them on the hob by placing them in a saucepan with the water, cinnamon and sweetener and cooking on a low heat until the apples have softened. This should take around 5-6 minutes.

How long can you keep these Apple Turnovers in the fridge?

Once you’ve put them out, ideally you should eat them within 4 hours.

If you allow any leftovers to cool, make sure to refrigerate in a container with a lid and chill. You can keep leftovers of Apple Turnovers in the fridge for approximately 3 days or so. You may need to “freshen” these up in the oven to get the crispness back. See more details below.

Can I freeze Apple Turnovers?

Yes you can! This recipe can be frozen, but please remember to do the following;

  • Freeze it as soon as it is cold enough.
  • Use a container or bag that is suitable for freezing.

Don’t forget to add a label with what it is, and on what date you put it in the freezer!

How do I reheat Apple Turnovers?

From chilled: Place on a baking tray and put into a moderately hot oven for 5-10 minutes until crisp. Keep a close eye on them as they can burn quickly if left too long.

From frozen: Allow to defrost. Place on a baking tray and put into a moderately hot oven for 5-10 minutes until crisp. Keep a close eye on them as they can burn quickly if left too long.
