This Spiced Pulled Pork is our twist on the classic – it’s slimming friendly and so tasty if you’re calorie counting or following Weight Watchers!

You’re more than welcome to just have the Spiced Pulled Pork on its own, but we made them into some rather colourful mini tacos/wraps.

Making the Spiced Pulled Pork into wraps makes it so much easier to eat, and you can get 4 mini wraps out of a Weight Watchers white wrap.

As a result, we’ve included all the separate components to this Spiced Pulled Pork – the spicy dressing and the carrot and red cabbage salad. The acidity of the salad compliments the savoury flavour of the Spiced Pulled Pork, and the dressing gives it a spicy zing.

The carrot and red cabbage salad is ridiculously easy to make. The lime juice adds such freshness and zing to this Spiced Pulled Pork recipe. It’s pretty similar to our Asian salad, just minus the fish sauce. If the idea of fish sauce creeps you out – just leave it out.

If you like things with a little more heat, feel free to add more Sriracha or even some chilli powder.

How many calories are in Spiced Pulled Pork?

There are 627 calories per portion in this Spiced Pulled Pork, which means it falls into our Special Occasion category.

To make the Spiced Pulled Pork

Step 1

Rub the pork all over with the five-spice powder and salt.

Step 2

Add the chicken stock, soy sauce, chilli flakes, rice vinegar, orange zest and Sriracha to the slow cooker.

Step 3

Add granulated sweetener and mix until it’s dissolved in the cooking liquor. Add the spring onions, garlic and ginger. Place the pork in, and make sure it’s coated well.

Step 4

Put the lid on the slow cooker, set it on high, and cook for 4 hours.

Step 5

After 4 hours, turn the slow cooker down to low and cook until the meat is very tender and cook for another 2 hours.

Step 6

Remove the pork and transfer the sauce to a pan (or turn the slow cooker on to saute if it has that setting) and allow the sauce to reduce by a half.

Step 7

Meanwhile, shred the pork with 2 forks and place it in a bowl.

Step 8

Remove the vegetables from the sauce and pour it through a fat separator, then stir it through the shredded pork.

Step 9

Cut each wrap into 4 quarters, then put a spoonful of the pork mix in each quarter. Fold the edges up so they look like a taco. Put some of the Slaw on top of the pork, then top with a couple of spoons of the spicy sauce.

To make the spicy sauce

Step 1

Mix all the ingredients together well…..yes it’s that easy!!

To make the slaw

Step 1

Place the shredded cabbage and carrots in a bowl – set aside.

Step 2

Mix the lime juice, rice vinegar, Sriracha and fish sauce (if using) in a bowl. Mix until the Sriracha is dissolved.

Step 3

Pour the mix over the shredded carrot and cabbage and toss to coat well.

How do you know when Spiced Pulled Pork is cooked?

The pork should cook in the slow cooker on high for 4 hours. After 4 hours turn the slow cooker down to low and cook until the meat is very tender and cook for another 2 hours. Remove the pork and transfer the sauce to a pan (or turn the slow cooker on to saute if it has that setting) and allow the sauce to reduce by a half.

Standard advice here in the UK is to cook food until it has reached 70°C and stayed at that temperature for 2 minutes. This is to keep your family safe.

How long can you keep Spiced Pulled Pork in the fridge?

Once you’ve put it out, ideally you should eat it within 4 hours.

If you allow any leftovers to cool, make sure to refrigerate in a container with a lid and chill. You can keep leftovers of Spiced Pulled Pork in the fridge for approximately 3 days or so.

Can I freeze Spiced Pulled Pork?

Yes you can! This recipe can be frozen, but please remember to do the following;

  • Freeze it as soon as it is cold enough.
  • Use a container or bag that is suitable for freezing.

Don’t forget to add a label with what it is, and on what date you put it in the freezer!

How do I reheat Spiced Pulled Pork?

From chilled: Place in a microwave proof container with loosely fitting lid and heat for 4-7 minutes until piping hot.

From frozen: Allow to defrost, and heat covered in the microwave for 3-5 minutes then stir. Cook for a further 5-7 minutes until piping hot.

Ingredients

For the pulled pork

  • 1 kg pork joint
  • 1 tsp Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 750 ml chicken stock made up with 2 stock cubes
  • 150 ml dark soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp granulated sweetener
  • 1/2 tsp crushed chilli flakes
  • 4 spring onions cut into 5-cm (2 inch) pieces
  • 1 head garlic cloves peeled and cut in half
  • 1 5cm piece fresh ginger no need to peel - cut into thin slices
  • 1 tsp Sriracha
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar or Lime Juice
  • 6 wraps we like Weight Watchers wraps
  • 1/2 orange zest only

For the slaw

  • 1/4 red cabbage shredded
  • 3 carrots julienned
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 lime juice only
  • 1 tsp Sriracha
  • 1 tsp fish sauce optional

For the spicy sauce

  • 5 tbsp quark
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tsp Sriracha
  • 1 tsp water depending on how thin you want the sauce

I’ve just made this and I have to say it is extremely salty. If I make it again i would definitely reduce the soy sauce I think.

    Hi Claire, feel free to alter the recipe to suit your taste like you have suggested you could reduce the amount of soy sauce or you can find reduced salt soy sauce in most supermarkets. Hope that helps!

Isn’t 150ml of Soy Sauce a lot to use? I’ve seen other recipes similar but they’re 3-5 tbsp. of Soy.
