We’ve seen many weird and wonderful ways of making slimming Sausage rolls such as bread thins and filo pastry but after tons of experimentation we’ve finally found the perfect recipe for Sausage Rolls that look, taste and have the texture as if you’ve used REAL flaky pastry.

If you were to eat one without knowing what they’re made with, you’d swear it was pastry. We promise you! Because you know exactly what goes into the sausage filling too, you can rest assured there are no nasties hidden in these Sausage Rolls so you can focus on the bigger issue: will you dip them in ketchup or brown sauce?

These Sausage Rolls are also pretty damn tasty, you may never go back to the bakery again. Pile them into a picnic basket or pop them into the kids’ lunchboxes, that is if you can resist them!

What diets are these Sausage Rolls suitable for?

These Sausage Rolls could be made gluten free by swapping out the following ingredients for gluten free versions;

  • Tortilla wraps
  • Worcestershire sauce

There are a number of brands that offer low calorie gluten free tortilla wraps. You can usually find them in the free from aisle of the supermarket.

You can also enjoy these Sausage Rolls if you’re dairy free.

Please make sure to double or triple check all of your ingredients if you’re cooking for people with allergies.

Vegetarians could swap the pork mince for vegetarian sausages, or perhaps use the filling from our Cheese and Onion Pasties recipe instead!

Do you need any special ingredients to make Sausage Rolls?

The key ingredients in this recipe are the low calorie tortilla wraps and 5% fat pork mince. Both are widely available in supermarkets.

If you’re serving these as part of a buffet table or afternoon tea, a lovely serving plate can take it to the next level!

How many calories are in these Sausage Rolls?

There are less than 400 calories per portion in this recipe – and they’re not cocktail sausage roll size either! This means they fall into our Everyday Light category.

These Sausage Rolls are a great swap for the greasy bakery kind, and are perfect for anyone following a calorie controlled diet. They also fit in well with any one of the major diet plans such as Weight Watchers.

As a guide, an average man needs around 2,500kcal (10,500kJ) a day to maintain a healthy body weight. For an average woman, that figure is around 2,000kcal (8,400kJ) a day. Obviously, if your goal is to lose weight then you might want to adjust these slightly! You can read more about these recommendations on the NHS website.

Step 1

Pre-heat the oven to 200°C

Place the mince in a large bowl

Add all the rest of the ingredients, (apart from 1 egg) and mix thoroughly

Spray a baking tray with some low calorie cooking spray

Divide the sausage meat into 6 equal sausage shapes

Place the sausages on the baking tray and cook for 15 minutes

Remove them from the oven and leave them to cool so they are cool enough to handle

Step 8

Lay a Weight Watchers wrap flat and brush all over the top with the beaten egg

Step 9

Place 2 sausages at one end and roll them up tightly in the wrap

Cut in half. You can cut the ends off the wrap just to tidy them up a little

Place the 6 sausage rolls on the baking tray and brush each one with the remaining beaten egg.

Place them on the prepared baking tray and cook for another 10 minutes, or until they are golden brown

Step 13

Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving

How do you know when the Sausage Rolls are cooked?

When the Sausage Rolls are golden and crispy on the outside they will be cooked and ready,

This should take approx 30 minutes in the oven at 200°C.

Standard advice here in the UK is to cook food until it has reached at least 70°C and stayed at that temperature for 2 minutes. This is to keep your family safe.

How long can you keep these Sausage Rolls in the fridge?

Once removed from the oven, ideally you should eat it them within 4 hours.

If you allow any left overs to cool, make sure to refrigerate in a container with a lid and chill.  You can keep leftovers Sausage Rolls in the fridge for approximately 3 days or so.

Can I freeze these Sausage Rolls?

Yes you can! This recipe can be frozen, but please remember to do the following;

  • Freeze it as soon as it is cold enough.
  • Use a container or bag that is suitable for freezing.

Don’t forget to add a label with the dish name and date it was frozen!

How do I reheat these Sausage Rolls?

We find that these Sausage Rolls are best reheated in the oven, so they keep that crispy ‘pastry’ shell.

From chilled: Place on a baking tray with a piece of foil over the Sausage Roll to prevent burning. Place in a 200°C preheated oven for 5-10 minutes, until piping hot throughout.

From frozen: Allow to defrost, place on a baking tray with a piece of foil over the Sausage Roll to prevent burning. Place in a 200°C preheated oven for 5-10 minutes, until piping hot throughout.

Ingredients

  • 400 g 5% pork mince
  • ½ onion finely chopped
  • ½ tsp thyme freshly chopped or dried
  • ½ tsp sage freshly chopped or dried
  • 1 tsp fresh parsley chopped
  • 2 eggs reserve one for glazing
  • 3 Weight Watchers wraps
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • ½ tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 dash Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp mustard powder
  • low calorie cooking spray
