We love BBQ Sauce, but like many of our favourite things, it’s not very slimming friendly. There are already a lot of BBQ sauce recipes out there but this is our version and our favourite…not that we’re biased or anything!

This is the same BBQ Sauce recipe we use for our Hunters Chicken and Pulled Pork but it’s so good we thought it deserved a recipe of its own.

Our BBQ Sauce is perfect if you’re counting calories or following a plan like Weight Watchers so you can use it as a sauce, marinade or a tangy dip, basically however you like!

What diets is this BBQ Sauce suitable for?

Franks Buffalo Wings Hot Sauce – Available at most supermarkets

Schwartz Perfect Shake BBQ Classic Seasoning. However, if you don’t have this you can use any BBQ seasoning.

We use Sukrin 1 which is an all-natural granulated stevia sweetener alternative to sugar with zero calories.

That being said you don’t have to use Sukrin – there are lots of other high quality granulated sweeteners available from the supermarket, such as Canderel Sugarly, and Natvia.

Step 1

Spray a frying pan with low calorie cooking spray and cook the onions and garlic until the onions are soft.

Step 2

Add the tomato puree and tinned tomatoes and cook for 5 minutes on high, stirring frequently.

Step 3

Add in the rest of the ingredients, lower the heat and simmer for 20 minutes, the sauce should thicken nicely.

Step 4

If the sauce seems a bit too thick just add a tiny bit of water and stir well.

Step 5

You can use this sauce as it is or if you prefer a smoother BBQ sauce just blitz it in a food processor until you get the desired consistency.

Step 6

You can make this in advance, just put it in a sterilised airtight container and store in the fridge until ready to use.

If you allow any leftovers to cool, make sure to refrigerate in a container with a lid and chill. You can keep leftovers of BBQ Sauce in the fridge for approximately 3 days or so.

Yes you can! This recipe can be frozen, but please remember to do the following;

  • Freeze it as soon as it is cold enough.

How do I reheat BBQ Sauce?

From chilled: Place in a microwave proof container with a loosely fitting lid and heat for 4-7 minutes until piping hot.
From frozen: Allow to defrost, and heat covered in the microwave for 3-5 minutes then stir. Cook for a further 5-7 minutes until piping hot.

Can you use something other then sukrin if so what and how much

Reply

    KateThursday 1st June 2017

    Hi Vanda
Yes you can use any other brand of sweetener. We use Sukrin as it is the same weight, consistency and sweetness as normal sugar so you can replace it in recipes on a 1 to 1 basis. If you want to use a different one then you should check the conversion rates of that particular brand. You can usually find this info on the sweeteners website
