Your Slimming Essentials – The Weekly Pinch of Shopping 09.04
In this week’s Weekly Pinch of Shopping, we’ve included many fruity favourites including a zesty orange fruit loaf that’s perfect for snacking and a filling porridge that’s packed with blueberry.
We’ve also found a white chocolate and raspberry ice cream that comes in at only 375 calories for the WHOLE tub! It’s so creamy and delicious, there’s no doubt it’s one of our favourite slimming essentials this week.
Feeling thirsty? Quench it with a deliciously sweet sugar free dark berry Tango – we think this product will cause quite a stir this summer.
We’re also sharing a lighter deep dish pizza that’s super cheesy as well as slimming friendly! If you prefer Thai as your takeaway of choice, try the Thai chilli king prawns on our list this week. They are perfect for serving on top of a microwave-friendly broccoli risotto. We can’t wait to try them all!
We also have a brand new Aldi Super 6 week this week. Aldi discounts a selection of fresh fruit and vegetables every fortnight, so we give you the rundown and inspiration to make the most of these budget ingredients.
Please remember that all prices are correct at the time of us writing this article and so they should be used as a guide only.

Nairn’s Blueberry Oats Your Way – 186 calories per serving
They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and it’s even tastier with these Nairn’s Blueberry Oats Your Way! As the name suggests, they’re made to be versatile!
Whether you’re layering up into Overnight Oats, eating hot as a warming bowl of fruity porridge, or even baking into Lemon and Blueberry Baked Oats, these oats are satisfying and nutritious. They’re naturally gluten free, vegan and high in fibre to keep you satisfied until lunchtime.
The addition of freeze-dried sweet blueberries adds an extra berry burst that’s just what you need to perk you up on a chilly spring day!
Nairn’s Blueberry Oats Your Way can be found in Sainsbury’s for £3.20 per bag.
Ashfield Farm 5% Fat Beef Meatballs – 117 calories per 3 meatballs
We are huge fans of lean minced beef as the base of so many meals, and these Ashfield Farm 5% Fat Beef Meatballs remove all the fuss and the messy hands.
With no need to roll your own, these 5% fat meatballs are perfectly shaped for you and made with only red-tractor certified beef. They’re also naturally free from gluten and priced at only £2.39, so they’re ideal if you’re looking to bulk out a pasta dish on a budget.
For a change from the traditional spaghetti and meatballs, try these in our Cheesy Mac ‘n’ Meatballs for a comforting, hearty dinner.
Aldi sell a 12-pack of these Ashfield Farm 5% Fat Meatballs for £2.39
Warburtons Fruit Loaf with Orange – 92 calories per slice
This Warburtons Fruit Loaf with Orange is packed with juicy sultanas and orange flavoured pieces for a fruity breakfast or tea time snack that takes fruit loaf to a whole new level.
Not only low in fat and a great source of filling fibre, two slices of this fruit loaf even provide one of your recommended daily 5-a-day!
You can enjoy a slice or two straight from the pack with a thin layer of low fat spread, or toast until golden brown for extra crunch. Either way, we think you’ll love the burst of sweetness and zest compared to standard fruit loaf!
Prefer something savoury on your toast? Our Marmite Mushrooms on Toast recipe is for you!
You can find Warburtons Fruit Loaf with Orange at most supermarkets for around £1.65
The Tasty Catch Co Thai Chilli King Prawns – 95 calories per half pack
For a simple, easy seafood dinner, The Tasty Catch Co Thai Chilli King Prawns are just the ticket! With a Thai marinade and just the right amount of fragrant spices, these prawns can be used in a variety of ways.
The prawns are freshly frozen and ready to cook straight from the freezer, resulting in juicy, succulent prawns in only 8 minutes. That’s faster than any takeaway delivery!
You can cook them fully and toss through a simple Fakeaway Fried Rice and serve with Salt and Pepper Chips for a Fakeaway feast.
The Tasty Catch Co Thai Chilli King Prawns are available at Aldi for £2.79 per 200g bag.
White Chocolate & Raspberry Ice Cream – 375 calories per whole tub
We’ve all been there: enjoying a couple of spoonfuls of ice cream straight from the tub and not wanting to put it back! This White Chocolate & Raspberry Ice Cream contains only 375 calories for the whole tub, so you get a lot more for the calories compared to some of the full fat and sugar versions! Thanks to Leanne Harper who shared this over in our Facebook Group.
With a creamy, indulgent white chocolate flavour and with sweet raspberry sauce swirls, this ice cream is so delicious we simply had to include it in our list of slimming essentials.
We’ve spotted this low calorie ice cream in salted caramel flavour too, if you’d prefer. Enjoy a scoop or two for dessert or let it slightly melt over a warm Chocolate Brownie!
This White Chocolate & Raspberry Ice Cream is from Aldi where it’s priced at £1.99 per tub
Morrisons Steam & Serve Broccoli Risotto – 261 calories per serving
Risotto is one of our go-to weeknight dinners when we need something fast and filling. With this Morrisons Steam & Serve Broccoli Risotto, there’s no need to stand over the hob constantly stirring. It couldn’t be easier!
This isn’t your typical risotto because it’s made with broccoli rice, so it’s lower in calories and higher in vitamins than the typical arborio rice that’s used in risotto, and smothered in a creamy parmesan sauce.
We’ve found parmesan is a slimming essential when trying to cut calories as a stronger flavour means you don’t need a huge amount to get a cheesy hit!
If you’d like a more traditional risotto, our brand new Chicken and Spring Vegetable Risotto will hit the spot.
Morrisons Steam & Serve Broccoli Risotto costs £2 for a 350g bag.
Tango Sugar Free Dark Berry – 13 calories per can
A chilled, freshly poured glass of a fizzy drink can be a refreshing treat, but with many of them containing lots of sugar, we are always on the lookout for new slimming friendly versions. This Tango Sugar Free Dark Berry is worlds apart from the usual orange flavoured Tango, and we love it!
With dark berry flavours of raspberry and blackberry, it feels like an indulgent treat but is actually sugar free and comes in at only 13 calories per can!
We’ve also spotted these in Strawberry and Watermelon flavour, which brings back memories of lounging in the sun with a drink in hand.
Try serving over ice or for a more grown-up version, try adding a can to our Raspberry Vodka Fizz for a taste of summer in a pinch.
Tango Sugar Free Dark Berry is available at Ocado for £3.19 for a pack of 6 cans.
Chicago Town Deep Dish Light Cheese Feast Pizza – 375 calories per pizza
Yes, a slimming friendly deep dish pizza! In previous weeks we have featured light and crispy low calorie pizza, but this Chicago Town Deep Dish Light Cheese Feast Pizza is a true deep dish pizza that’s extremely cheesy.
It’s made of a high, crunchy crust with a rich tomato sauce and a blend of reduced fat cheeses.
A whole pizza will set you back just 375 calories, but you could always split one in half and serve with a pile of fresh, crisp salad to make it go even further!
Cook from frozen for ultimate convenience, we think it would work well alongside Cheesy Garlic Bread and a Greek Salad.
These Chicago Town Deep Dish Light Cheese Feast Pizzas can be found at most supermarkets in packs of 2 for £1.50.
NEW Aldi Super 6 Fruit and Veg Selection
We love Aldi’s selection of fresh fruit and veggies, and each fortnight they choose six of them for a special offer where you can pick them up for much less than the normal price.
Here’s our reminder of this fortnight’s selection and some meal inspiration to give you some ideas on how to make the most of the Super 6!
Brown Onions – 40 calories per 100g
Flavourful and low in calories, we used chopped onions in many of our dishes as a base. As they cook, they lose their sharpness and turn a little sweeter, so don’t be put off if the smell of raw onions makes you cry!
Add diced onions to Chilli Con Carne or Cheese and Onion Pasties.
Unwaxed Lemons – 17 calories per 100g
These unwaxed lemons don’t have the added waxy layer that’s often added to keep the skin bright and shiny, so it means you get much more from the zest.
Creamy Lemon Chicken is one of our most popular recipes in our Facebook Group, and with fresh flavours and an indulgent sauce, it makes a simple weeknight dinner in only half an hour.
White Mushrooms – 22 calories per 100g
Mushrooms are a great way of adding extra texture to dishes, and you can bulk out meals without adding extra calories.
We think they work wonderfully chopped up in our filling Breakfast Muffins.
Sweet Potatoes – 86 calories per 100g
Sweet potatoes are full of fibre and a great alternative to standard potatoes. You can chop into fries, blitz into soup or serve Sweet Potato and Butternut Squash Mash alongside a roast dinner.
One of our favourite ways to use sweet potatoes is to transform them into Sweet Potato Pakoras for fakeaway night!
Tenderstem Broccoli – 40 calories per 100g
Tenderstem broccoli is a long-stemmed variety of broccoli that you don’t need to pre-chop – the stalk is completely edible!
Chinese Chicken and Broccoli is a fab fakeaway when you’re short on time as it’s on the table in only 30 minutes and features bright, fresh tenderstem broccoli.
Romaine Lettuce Hearts – 17 calories per 100g
Romaine lettuce is so versatile, you can enjoy sliced in salads or you can use it in place of bread or burger buns to keep calories even lower. Top with Pork Carnitas with Pineapple and Mango Salsa for a tasty way to use this low calorie lettuce.
