This Ginger and Orange Glazed Ham was a Boxing Day staple in our house when we were growing up and our slimming friendly version has all of the flavours but with fewer calories.
Cooked in a ginger ale and orange juice liquor and spiced with warming ginger, this Ginger and Orange Glazed Ham is a real festive treat.
As it’s cooked in the slow cooker, it means that you can just throw all of the ingredients in in the morning and then leave it to cook while you get on with your day. Simple finish it in the oven to get that really lovely sweet and sticky glaze, and you’re guaranteed to impress your guests!
We don’t recommend reheating this Ginger and Orange Glazed Ham as it can really affect the quality of the meat and cause it to become really tough and dry, but it is absolutely delicious when served cold the next day as part of a buffet or in sandwiches.
This Ginger and Orange Glazed Ham is a great alternative to our Slow Cooked Christmas Turkey Joint when served on Christmas Day if you fancy a change. You can also visit our Christmas recipes collection to find more options for your Christmas dinner like our Beef Wellington recipe.

Step 1
Add the gammon joint to a slow cooker and pour over the ginger ale and orange juice. If the gammon is still showing from the top of the liquid then top it up with water until it is covered.
Step 2
Add the ginger, peppercorns, cloves, star anise, cinnamon stick, bay leaves and the quartered orange.
Step 3
Set the slow cooker to medium and cook for 5 1/2 hours.
Step 4
Once the gammon is cooked, lift it out onto a piece of foil set in a roasting tin and wrap the foil loosely round to contain the gammon. Preheat the oven to 200ºC and allow the gammon to rest whilst preparing the glaze. Discard the cooking liquor.
Step 5
In a small saucepan add the glaze ingredients and heat to a simmer. Allow the glaze to reduce down for 3 minutes until it is thickened and sticky.
Step 6
Pour half of the glaze over the gammon, allowing it to run down the sides and place in the oven for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes pour over the rest of the glaze and pop back into the oven for another 10 minutes.
Step 7
Remove the gammon from the oven and allow it to rest before you try to cut it as it will fall apart if it is too hot.
Step 8
Serve as part of your roast dinner.

Would this work on a turkey joint instead? If so do I need to adjust the cooking time?
SharonWednesday 17th May 2023
Hi Emma, we think orange and ginger flavours would work well with a turkey joint. We have a slow cooker turkey joint recipe here Slow Cooker Christmas Turkey Joint that you can look at to see what weight of turkey joint to use in a slow cooker, cooking time required and general advice on cooking turkey in the slow cooker. Do hope this helps!

HollyMonday 6th September 2021
Hey Kate, Instead of adding to the slow cooker add to a large saucepan and cook on a low heat for 2 1/2 hours. Then follow steps 4-8 as the recipe is written. Hope that helps!
