Our Weekly Pinch of Shopping list aims to show you slimming-friendly products that you can find online or in one of your local supermarkets. We try to make it as easy as possible for you to pick up these items as part of your usual weekly shop, and we’ll always include the calorie information and the RRP for you.
Please remember that, although all prices are correct at the time of writing, supermarkets can change their prices often, so this should be used as a guide only.
Along with our favourite new finds from the supermarket shelves, each week we include details of the Aldi Super 6. Every fortnight Aldi discounts a selection of 6 fruits and veggies that you can pick up for a fraction of the price. This week we’ve given you a reminder of the current selection, so hurry down to Aldi to pick up some bargains before a fresh selection goes on offer next week!

Village Bakery High Protein Bagel Thins – 263 calories per 2 bagel thins
Aldi hasn’t stopped adding tasty products to its protein range just yet. These Village Bakery High Protein Bagel Thins are the latest creation to find their way into our basket, and we love that they’re crispy and satisfying with 15 grams of protein per serving.
When it comes to enjoying a breakfast butty like our Egg-in-the-Hole Breakfast Bagel, using a knife and fork is a must. We like to serve it with the gorgeous, golden egg yolk nice and runny, so you won’t even need to add sauce.
Our recipe uses bagel thins, as well as leaner bacon medallions, juicy tomatoes and mushrooms to keep things filling and lighter in calories.
Village Bakery High Protein Bagel Thins are available from Aldi, priced at £1.19 per pack.
Las Chicas Birria Cooking Paste Smoky Ancho Chilli – 61 calories per 100g
Keep your eyes peeled while you’re in the middle aisles at Aldi! You might just spot a jar of Las Chicas Birria Cooking Paste Smoky Ancho Chilli. A little goes a long way when it comes to adding smoky, Mexican-style flavours to just about any dish, from tacos and burritos to stews and soups.
Think about using a spoonful or two next time you’re slow-cooking meat until it’s fall-apart tender; chicken thighs, beef or lamb would all work really well.
Our Burrito Burgers recipe already has a mild bit of heat involved from chilli powder and smoky paprika, but there’s nothing to stop you coating the patties in a bit of ancho chilli paste for a fiery boost.
Pile them high with a melty cheese slice, cooked peppers and a proper dollop of our homemade Mexican-style salsa.
Las Chicas Birria Cooking Paste Smoky Ancho Chilli is available from Aldi, priced at £2.49 per jar.
Kallo Beetroot & Mixed Seeds Veggie Thins – 52 calories per 4 crackers
These Kallo Beetroot and Mixed Seeds Veggie Thins are baked rather than fried, meaning they’re already lower in calories than your average day-to-day savoury snack. The beetroot-flavoured crackers are made with a crunchy blend of chickpeas, quinoa and chia seeds.
Tuck into them as they are, top them with cheese or dip them into a velvety pot of hummus – either way, they’ll send your snack cravings packing!
Beetroot is one of those ingredients we really should cook with more often, and the proof is in our Roasted Beetroot and Rosemary Salad. We’ve combined beetroot’s natural, earthy sweetness with a zesty mix of orange juice, garlic, honey and rosemary.
Add a mouthwatering topping of tangy crumbled feta and say hello to your new-favourite salad.
Kallo Beetroot & Mixed Seeds Veggie Thins are available from Morrisons, priced at £2.75 per box.
Paxo Super Crumb Coating with Oat Flakes Wholemeal Rusk & Seeds – 80 calories per portion
With a box of Paxo Super Crumb Coating with Oat Flakes Wholemeal Rusk and Seeds handy in your cupboard, you’ll only be a sprinkling from taking mealtimes up a notch.
Give a quick and easy gourmet-style makeover to your choice of protein; just imagine how much tastier midweek salmon, chicken or tofu would be with a savoury crunch.
No one ever said that crumbles always have to be sweet. As soon as the nights get colder, you can bet we’ll be making our hearty Beef Crumble recipe on repeat.
You won’t find a mashed potato topping here; instead, we’ve covered our beef and veggies with a cheesy layer of crunchy baked oats.
Paxo Super Crumb Coating with Oat Flakes Wholemeal Rusk & Seeds is available from Sainsbury’s, priced at £1.90 per box.
Dairylea Dunkers Plant-Based Jumbo Tubes – 91 calories per tub
If anyone tries to tell us these Dairylea Dunkers Plant-Based Jumbo Tubes are just for kids, we won’t be listening! Dunkers are a snacktime favourite at PON HQ, and we’re loving trying this all-new plant-based version.
So far everyone’s in agreement that they taste just as yummy, and it’s an added bonus that they’re ever so slightly lower in calories too.
If you’re buzzing to add them to your lunchbox, bear in mind that you can only grab them from Tesco or Sainsbury’s at the minute.
When we think about gooey cheese, our Chilli Cheese Nachos is always the first recipe that springs to mind. We love putting it at the centre of the dining table as a shareable centrepiece, for everyone to just ‘dig in!’ and enjoy.
Dairylea Dunkers Plant-Based Jumbo Tubes are available from Tesco and Sainsbury’s, priced at £3.25 for a pack of 4.
Specially Selected Classic Edition Macarons – 50 calories per macaron (approx.)
These Specially Selected Classic Edition Macarons feel like you’re biting into a sweet treat that’s really indulgent, and yet they’re only 50 calories each (that may vary slightly between flavours).
Just like from a French patisserie, they’re crispy on the outside with a soft, chewy centre, making them the perfect companion for a cuppa. We call dibs on the pistachio one!
When we see macarons, we think of an afternoon tea and our dreamy Mini Victoria Sponge Cakes. You can sandwich them together with any jam you like, but we’ve gone for reduced-sugar raspberry to give every bite a little luxurious tartness.
Since there’s no butter or sugar, the calories are nice and low at just 44 calories per sponge!
Specially Selected Classic Edition Macarons are available from Aldi, priced at £1.99 for a pack of 6.
Quorn Cheesy Nacho Nuggets – 165 calories per 4 cooked nuggets
It’s so much easier to take a break from meat with tasty bites like Quorn Cheesy Nacho Nuggets on the menu. Coated in a moreish cheesy yet fiery jalapeño crumb, there’s no doubt they’ll steal the show the next time you serve a picky tea.
It’s good to know that with the magic of your air fryer, you can have a fresh batch rustled up in just 10 minutes (or 15 minutes from your oven).
It doesn’t take much longer to whip up our Veggie Dippers recipe from scratch. They’re the perfect excuse to use up any vegetable leftovers you have; we usually chop in carrot, red pepper, peas and sweetcorn.
Trust us, even the fussiest eaters at the table can’t say no! The trick is to serve them with plenty of smoky-sweet dip (don’t worry, that’s part of our recipe too!).
You can also make them in your oven by following this recipe.
Quorn Cheesy Nacho Nuggets are available from Tesco, priced at £2.50 per pack.
Birds Eye Potato Waffles Fries – 219 calories per 1/4 pack baked
Why choose between waffles and fries when you can have Birds Eye Potato Waffles Fries? A fun alternative to serving plain chips or potatoes at dinnertime, you can also air-fry them to golden and crispy, fluffy-in-the-middle perfection in less than 15 minutes.
As soon as we spotted them in the freezer at Iceland, we knew we wanted to give them a whirl with a sprinkling of our Flava It! Salt and Pepper Seasoning Mix.
We were so pleased with how much it tasted just like a takeaway treat, for a fraction of the calories. Simply add the right amount of seasoning mix to your air fryer (bear in mind 1 sachet serves 4), and toss everything together, ready to cook for 5-10 minutes.
It’s in our Flava It! Fakeaway Favourites collection box, which is currently available to buy on Amazon. Just bear in mind that it’s not available on Prime delivery at the moment (we promise, we’re working on that!).
Birds Eye Potato Waffles Fries are available from Iceland, priced at £2.80 per bag.
Müller Myprotein Chocolate Flavour Pudding Dessert – 178 calories per pot (20g of protein)
If you’ve been to Sainsbury’s lately, you might have spotted signs of the latest collaboration between Müller and sports-nutrition brand Myprotein. There’s plenty of higher protein products to choose from, including yoghurts, puddings and drinks.
We decided to give the Müller Myprotein Chocolate Flavour Pudding Dessert a whirl, and we weren’t disappointed. It’s silky and satisfying, with the benefit of 20 grams of protein per pot. Not bad at all!
While our own Chocolate Mousse recipe isn’t jam-packed with protein, it is utterly delicious and so fun to make. For a more filling pud, you can always pair it with your favourite juicy-sweet fruits, waffles or biscuits.
Just be sure to count up any additional calories, if you’re keeping track.
Müller Myprotein Chocolate Flavour Pudding Dessert is available from Sainsbury’s, priced at £1.95 per pot.
Mr Kipling Signature Chocolate And Caramel Layer Cakes – 176 calories per cake
We found these Mr Kipling Signature Chocolate And Caramel Layer Cakes in Morrisons the other day, and we can already tell we’ll have to head back for more.
Bursting with chocolatey goodness, each delicate little cake is soft and moist, layered with rich creme and a sticky caramel sauce.
While all of that sounds like it shouldn’t be slimming friendly, they’re lighter than they taste at 176 calories each.
For a treat where chocolate and caramel are the perfect duo, turn to pages 186-189 of our Enjoy cookbook. That’s where you’ll find our full Salted Caramel and Chocolate Popcorn Bites recipe!
They’re so easy to make, you can get the whole family involved. Add a dusting of sea salt to really make the flavours pop.
Mr Kipling Signature Chocolate And Caramel Layer Cakes are available from Morrisons, priced at £2.50 for a pack of 4.
