Beef and broccoli in a savoury soy and ginger Chinese-style sauce: the perfect fuss-free fakeaway that’s ready in only 25 minutes!

The fragrant, sticky sauce reminds us of the one you’d get from the takeaway that’s made with oil and sugar, but we’ve made some clever slimming swaps to keep it light: granulated sweetener adds the sweetness, and the fish and soy sauces create a rich, deep sauce that’s so moreish!We’ve used crisp fresh peppers, onions and broccoli, but you can throw in any leftover veggies you have in the fridge for a budget friendly dinner that is ideal for a weeknight or when you’re rushed for time.

We love a timesaving tip, and you can even freeze the beef and broccoli mix to speed things up next time, and just pop some noodles on the hob for a few minutes while you reheat!

We’ve used a few bits from the world foods aisle at the supermarket in this recipe, but they’re so handy to have in the cupboard because you’ll use them time and time again. Fish sauce can put a lot of people off, but it serves to add a richness and doesn’t taste ‘fishy’ at all when used in small quantities, it’s worth a try if you’ve not used it before!

Henderson’s Relish is similar to Worcestershire sauce but is gluten free, so we have used it in this recipe to make it suitable for a gluten free diet. It can be found in the condiments aisle.

Add the sauce mixture to the beef and vegetables and mix well. Add the spring onion and cook for 3 to 5 minutes until the sauce has thickened and is coating the meat and vegetables.

Cook the egg noodles following the instructions on the packet, then drain and divide between 4 bowls, top with the beef and broccoli and serve.

How do you know when Beef and Broccoli Noodle Bowls are cooked?

Ingredients

  • 300 g stir fry beef strips
  • 150 g dried egg noodles
  • 100 g tenderstem broccoli cut into florets
  • 1 onion peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic peeled and grated
  • 1 red pepper deseeded and cut into strips
  • 2 cm piece of fresh root ginger peeled and finely grated
  • 1 tbsp granulated sweetener
  • 1 tbsp dark soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp Henderson's Relish
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1 tsp fish sauce
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 spring onion chopped
  • low calorie cooking spray

I’ve yet to try this dish but I’ve just tried to get the ingredients together and I can’t find Henderson relish in my local Asda, is there an alternative I can use or will it taste ok without it?

What could I use instead of fish sauce for this recipe?? I’m not a fan but love this dish

    Hi Sarah, you could use vegetarian fish sauce which has a much more subtle flavour or alternatively oyster sauce will work just great. As the recipe only uses 1tsp you could also omit and it will still taste okay. Hope that helps!
