This colourful Festive Fruit Salad is lightly spiced with the warming festive flavours of cinnamon, nutmeg and zesty orange.

Sweetened with a bit of honey, we’ve used fruits that are available in the winter in order to make this Festive Fruit Salad a fantastic addition to your Christmas table.

If you’re not a fan of any of the fruits we’ve used then you can definitely swap them out for something else, or just omit them altogether, but we think that this combo of wintery fruits and sweet syrup works really well.

We’ve heated our honey and orange syrup on the hob, but you can heat yours in the microwave if you prefer. Simply pop into your microwave and heat for 1 -2 minutes or until the orange zest has softened.

This Festive Fruit Salad is so fresh and vibrant that it really needs to be eaten on the same day that it’s prepared. If you wanted to get it ready in advance, you could keep it covered in the fridge overnight before serving the next day, but we think that it’s really worth making just before serving if you can find the time!

For the orange and honey syrup

Step 1

Place the orange juice, orange zest, honey, cinnamon and nutmeg in a small saucepan and place over a medium heat. Bring to a simmer, then lower the heat and simmer for 4 – 5 minutes, until the orange zest has softened.

Remove from the heat, set aside and leave to cool.

For the fruit salad

Step 1

Arrange the oranges, grapefruit, nectarine, figs, blackberries, raspberries and pomegranate seeds on a large serving dish or serving bowl.

Pour the cooled orange and honey syrup evenly over the fruit salad, along with the softened orange zest.

Sprinkle the pistachio nuts over the top of the fruit salad if wished and serve.

Ingredients

  • 3 medium oranges peeled and cut into round slices
  • 2 medium pink or ruby grapefruits peeled and cut into round slices
  • 1 nectarine cut into segments
  • 4 fresh figs stalks removed and sliced into round slices
  • 100 g blackberries
  • 100 g raspberries
  • 100 g pomegranate seeds

For the orange and honey syrup

  • 2 medium oranges juice of
  • 10 g orange zest all pith removed, cut into fine strips (approx 2mm wide)
  • 4 tbsp clear honey
  • pinch of ground cinnamon
  • pinch of ground nutmeg

To garnish (optional)

  • 15 g pistachio nuts chopped

Instructions

For the orange and honey syrup

You can buy boxes of prepared pomegranate seeds at most supermarkets. This may be more convenient than removing the seeds yourself from a whole fruit.
