As the name suggests, we’ve added baked beans to our stew but don’t let it put you off: it adds a rich depth of flavour and adds filling proteins to make this Beef and Baked Bean Stew even more satisfying. If you’ve not heard of Henderson’s Relish before, it’s a sauce that’s very similar to Worcestershire sauce that’s naturally gluten free. We use it in many of our recipes and you can find it in most supermarkets in the condiment aisle.

Serve on its own for a delicious dinner as the nights get colder, or with a wholemeal roll for dipping.

What diets is this Beef and Baked Bean Stew suitable for?

This recipe is suitable for dairy free diets.

It can also be made suitable for gluten free diets as long as you use gluten free versions of the following ingredients:

  • Beef stock cube
  • Beef stock pot (most beef stock pots are gluten free, but please do double check)

We’ve used Henderson’s Relish in this recipe, which is a gluten free substitute to Worcestershire Sauce. You can find it in the condiments aisle in the supermarket.

How many calories are in this Beef and Baked Bean Stew?

This Beef and Baked Bean Stew is perfect if you’re following a calorie controlled diet and fits well with any one of the major diet plans such as Weight Watchers.

Step 1

Spray a frying pan with low calorie cooking spray and cook the beef for 2-3 minutes, turning halfway to ensure an even colour.

Transfer the browned beef to the slow cooker and add black pepper, carrots, onions, potatoes, beef stock, stock pot and Henderson’s Relish.

Step 3

Stir the baked beans into the slow cooker, cover with the lid and cook on high for 4.5 hours. Remove the lid and cook for a further 1.5-2 hours.

Step 4

Season to taste with salt and black pepper and serve.

How do you know when this Beef and Baked Bean Stew is cooked?

You’ll need to cook your Beef and Baked Bean Stew until the meat is cooked through and the vegetables are tender. This should take around 6 1/2 hours in the slow cooker.

Standard advice here in the UK is to cook food until it has reached 70°C and stayed at that temperature for 2 minutes. This is to keep your family safe.

Ingredients

  • 500 g diced beef all visible fat removed
  • 2 tins baked beans 410g/14oz tins
  • 1 large carrot peeled and sliced
  • 1 onion peeled and chopped
  • 2 medium potatoes peeled and quartered
  • 1 beef stock cube
  • 600 ml boiling water to make up the beef stock
  • 1 beef stock pot
  • 2 tbsp Henderson's Relish
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • low calorie cooking spray
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

I’ve made this several times and it’s quickly become a favourite. Quick and easy to prepare and very filling with plenty of flavour. I use Worcestershire sauce instead of Henderson’s as it’s a cupboard staple at home. Never needed to add anything to thicken so far. A super meal to come home to after a hard day’s work.
I cook it on low for around 8½ hours. Perfect.

    Hi Melinda, We work out our recipes on the serving size not by weight. To work out your own weight of a serving you would need to make the finished dish and divide servings as the weight will vary due to variation of ingredients and water content it’s not something we can do as an exact measure.     Hi Jessica, all of our recipes are worked out by the servings not weight. This recipe serves 6 but if you scroll down to the recipe card at the bottom of the page there is a little arrow by servings and you can alter up or down to serve more or less people. Hope that helps!
