It may seem a bit daunting to consider preparing fresh ginger when you pick up a chunk of it in the supermarket, but it’s actually really easy!
Sure, you can buy jars of ground ginger or you can even get it pre-prepared, but trust us, nothing tastes as amazing as fresh ginger!
How many calories are in fresh ginger?
As a rough idea, ginger has around 4.8 calories per tablespoon.
This is only an approximate value however and it will obviously vary based on the size of your chunk of ginger!

Can you freeze fresh, prepared ginger?
Yes you can freeze fresh ginger! We often use it straight out of the freezer and grate it!
If you do choose to freeze it then please remember to use a container or bag that is suitable for freezing – you could even try using an ice cube tray to freeze it in handy little portions!
How long can you keep fresh, prepared ginger?
Once your ginger has been prepared it’s best to use it as soon as possible. You can freeze any extra ginger if needed.

- A Microplane
- Fine Grater
- Sharp Knife
- Chopping Board
Material
- 3 cm Ginger
Instructions
- Firmly hold your chunk of ginger by the top and bottom and use a spoon to firmly, but carefully scrape away the peel.
- Using a sharp knife, cut the ginger into thin slices - be very careful not to cut yourself!
- Stack the slices of ginger up on top of each other and very carefully slice into thin strips.
- Gather the strips together and then finely dice. You’ll need to be super careful not to cut yourself during this step!!
- If you’d prefer a finer dice to your ginger, then you could also grate it using a microblade. Again, be really careful of your fingers!
- Add to your favourite dish!
