Sometimes on the weekend, we’d occasionally have a chicken kebab, but not anymore. This Chicken Souvlaki and Tzatziki is a million times nicer!

We don’t tend to have a “treat night” anymore, and instead we’ll cook something interesting that feels like a “treat” – hence our obsession with recreating take away recipes and turning them into slimming “fakeaways”!

This Chicken Souvlaki and Tzatziki is super low on calories and Points and we think it tastes even better than something you’d pick up from the takeaway – it’s really worth that extra little bit of effort!

What diets is this Chicken Souvlaki and Tzatziki suitable for?

The Chicken Souvlaki in this recipe is suitable for gluten free and dairy free diets.

The Tzatziki is also suitable for gluten free diets and can be made suitable for dairy free diets by swapping the following ingredients for dairy free versions;

  • Fat free natural yoghurt

What do I need to cook this Chicken Souvlaki and Tzatziki?

You’ll need a good quality jar with a tight lid to store the rest of the Souvlaki seasoning mix in, and you’ll be able to pick up some bamboo skewers from any supermarket – they’ll be on offer soon as BBQ season starts!

Our cast iron griddle pan has to be the most used pan in our kitchen. It’s the best pan to cook meat in, and it holds the heat SO well! It also means that you’ll get those fantastic griddle marks which make your food taste amazing.

Hints & Tips

Below we added some of our communities most common hints and tips. We hope you find them useful.

Add some veg!
Add pieces of diced red pepper and onion wedges to your skewers for an even healthier version. I also added a tablespoon of Greek yogurt to the spices and marinated the diced chicken for an hour before making up.
I used chicken mince instead and used garlic mayo instead of making tzatziki
I added a couple of mini wraps to this meal - at 88 cals each, they're a good option for slimmers.
These kebabs were lovely! Nice and easy to make!
I only used 2 chicken breasts so I halfed the marinade and used half of the juice of lemon and 1tbsp of seasoning mix instead. I also cooked theses on the bbq instead of the oven and they came out perfect with some onion and pepper on the skewers too

How many calories are in this Chicken Souvlaki and Tzatziki?

There are only 343 calories in each portion of this Chicken Souvlaki and Tzatziki which means falls into our Everyday Light category.

This recipe is perfect if you’re following a calorie controlled diet and fits well with any one of the major diet plans such as Weight Watchers.

As a guide, an average man needs around 2,500kcal (10,500kJ) a day to maintain a healthy body weight. For an average woman, that figure is around 2,000kcal (8,400kJ) a day. Souvlaki seasoning mix

Step 1

Mix all of the ingredients together and place in a glass jar – preferably one with a tight lid.

Souvlaki chicken

Step 1

Cut the chicken breasts into chunks about the size and thickness of a chicken nugget. Place into a non-reactive bowl.

Step 2

Add the lemon juice and mix well so all of the pieces are coated.

Step 3

Add 2 tbsp of the Souvlaki Seasoning Mix and mix well. Cover with clingfilm and place in the fridge for at least 1 hour.

Step 4

Preheat an oven to 200°C.

Step 5

Slide your chicken pieces onto the skewers and then spray them liberally with low calorie cooking spray.

Step 6

Heat a cast iron griddle pan (or mist a frying pan with low calorie cooking spray and heat, if you don’t have one). When the pan is very hot, add the chicken skewers, and cook on each side until the chicken colours.

Step 7

Once coloured on all sides, place the chicken in the oven for 5-10 minutes until the chicken is cooked through.

For the Tzatziki dressing

Step 1

Place all of the Tzatziki ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Season to taste.

How do you know when this Chicken Souvlaki and Tzatziki is cooked?

You’ll need to cook the chicken for around 20 minutes or until it’s cooked through.

Standard advice here in the UK is to cook food until it has reached 70°C and stayed at that temperature for 2 minutes.  This is to keep your family safe.

How long can you keep Chicken Souvlaki and Tzatziki in the fridge?

Once you’ve put it out, ideally you should eat this dish within 4 hours.

If you allow any leftovers to cool, make sure to refrigerate in a container with a lid and chill.  You can keep leftovers of Chicken Souvlaki and Tzatziki in the fridge for approximately 3 days or so. 

Can you freeze this Chicken Souvlaki and Tzatziki?

Yes you can!  You can freeze the chicken in this recipe, but not the tzatziki.  Please remember to do the following;

  • Freeze it as soon as it is cold enough.
  • Use a container or bag that is suitable for freezing.

Don’t forget to add a label with what it is, and on what date you put it in the freezer!

How do you reheat this Chicken Souvlaki and Tzatziki recipe?

From chilled: Place in a microwave proof container with loosely fitting lid and heat for 4-7 minutes until piping hot.

From frozen: Allow to defrost, and heat covered in the microwave for 3-5 minutes then stir. Cook for a further 5-7 minutes or until piping hot.

Ingredients

Souvlaki seasoning mix

  • 2 tbsp dried oregano
  • 2 tbsp paprika
  • 2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper

Souvlaki chicken

  • 2 tbsp Souvlaki seasoning mix
  • 4 large chicken breasts
  • 1 lemon juice of
  • skewers
  • low calorie cooking spray

Tzatziki

  • 160 g fat free natural yoghurt
  • 2 tsp lemon juice
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp mint sauce
  • sea salt
  • freshly ground black pepper

Oh my goodness I made this tonight, I’ve never had a bad recipe from PON but this is exceptional!!!!!! I put it in skinny wraps with red onion, rocket and reduced fat feta. Can’t wait to make this a regular meal at home!

Made this tonight. Prepared last night so sat in the fridge marinading for about 10 hours.
Was late home so just dry fried in a pan. Turned out great. Big hit.
Served with a ww wrap and salad.

I made this at the weekend a real winner with hubby will definitely make it again so easy I marinated the chicken in the morning and left it in the fridge to chill to use later I had it with cous cous and lots of roasted vegetables and of course the sauce which complements it well

I did this for my husband in an attempt to stop us getting a ‘proper’ takeaway chicken kebab. It was fab! I marinated the chicken overnight and used an aldi greek style fat free lemon yoghurt rather than the yog/ lemon juice combo. cooked it on the griddle pan and had sw style roasted potatoes/ sw chips and salad.
AWESOME!!!

Made these last night. They were fantastic, such a great change from our normal chicken recipes.quite spicy as i let the chicken marinate for about 6 hours, so definitely needed the sw tzatziki to dip then chicken in!

    We got ours from Sainsburys, but I think I’ve seen it in Asda too. If you can’t get hold of it you could make your own using dried or fresh chopped mint with a little sweetener, a drizzle of boiling water and some white wine vinegar

I’m feeling pretty conflicted about this one. The tzatziki is so simple to make and absolutely delicious. The chicken is cooked perfectly following the times. However the seasoning is off for my taste. Not sure what it is – possibly too much of the oregano or thyme – but it was too overpowering on the chicken. On the plus side, it’s made me see how easy it is to do chicken skewers and i’ll definitely be making them again but will look for alternative seasoning options, or at least tinkering with this mix.
