Sometimes upping your veg intake can feel like a chore, but with a roast you can have loads of low calorie vegetables, and not really notice you’re eating it! Roasted meat & vegetables wouldn’t be complete without roast potatoes, right?

Just because we’re talking about Sundays, doesn’t mean you can only have these Roast Potatoes on a Sunday. You can have them every day of the week if you like!

How many Calories are in Roast Potatoes?

One serving of our Roast Potatoes is just 275 calories! This means it falls into our Everyday Light recipe category. You can find all of our other Everyday Light recipes here

These Roast Potatoes are perfect if you’re following a calorie controlled diet, and fit well with any one of the major diet plans such as Weight Watchers. 

As a guide, an average man needs around 2,500kcal (10,500kJ) a day to maintain a healthy body weight. For an average woman, that figure is around 2,000kcal (8,400kJ) a day. Obviously, if your goal is to lose weight then you might want to adjust these slightly! You can read more about these recommendations on the NHS website.

This recipe is suitable for most diets!

You can enjoy these Roast Potatoes if you are gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian or vegan.

How Weight Watchers friendly are Roast Potatoes?

These Roast Potatoes are 5 Points per serving. If you serve them up with some skinless chicken breast and zero point veg, you’ve got yourself a really low point roast dinner!

How to Make Roast Potatoes

Making these roasties is super easy! Here’s a summary; 

  • Preheat the oven and peel the potatoes.
  • Dice the potatoes and rinse with cold water. Place in a pan filled with salted cold water.
  • Bring the pan up to the boil, and cook until they start to soften but are still firm.
  • Drain them in a colander & leave for 5 minutes. Season with plenty of salt & spray with plenty of low calorie cooking spray. Toss them, then spray them again to coat.
  • Spray a baking tray with low calorie cooking spray and tip out the potatoes. Bake in the oven turning half way.
  • Serve with a choice of accompaniments.

Do you need any special ingredients to make Roast Potatoes?

The short answer is no! The key to making these Roast Potatoes slimming friendly is using low calorie cooking spray in the place of lashings of oil. Other than that all you need is potatoes and salt!

Can you cook Roast Potatoes another way?

You could cook these Roast Potatoes in an air fryer if you have one. The timings will depend on the model you have, but they are usually a bit faster than the oven.

At step 5 in the directions put them in the air fryer for around 30 minutes, making sure to shake the basket regularly.

How do you know when Roast Potatoes are cooked?

The outside of the potatoes will be golden and crispy, and the insides will be soft and fluffy.

After parboiling and draining the potatoes will take around 40 minutes in a preheated oven (200°C), or around 30 minutes in an air fryer (200°C).

Standard advice here in the UK is to cook food until it has reached 70°C and stayed at that temperature for 2 minutes. This is to keep your family safe. 

How long can you keep Roast Potatoes in the fridge?

Once you’ve put them out, ideally you should eat them within 4 hours.

If you allow any left overs to cool, make sure to refrigerate in a container with a lid and chill.  You can keep leftover Roast Potatoes in the fridge for approximately 3 days or so. 

Can I freeze Roast Potatoes?

Yes you can! This recipe can be frozen, but please remember to do the following;

  • Freeze it as soon as it is cold enough.
  • Use a container or bag that is suitable for freezing.

Don’t forget to add a label with what it is, and on what date you put it in the freezer! 

How do I reheat Roast Potatoes?

From chilled: Place in a microwave proof container with loosely fitting lid and heat for 4-7 minutes until piping hot.

From frozen: Allow to defrost, and heat covered in the microwave for 3-5 minutes then stir. Cook for a further 5-7 minutes until piping hot.

  1. Preheat oven to 200°C. Peel potatoes and remove any eyes

  4. Drain them in a colander & leave them there for 5 minutes. After the 5 minutes, put them in a bowl, season with plenty of salt & spray with plenty of low calorie cooking spray. Toss them, then spray them again as you're tossing them. They need to be very well coated!
  5. Spray a baking tray with low calorie cooking spray and tip out the potatoes. Bake for 40 minutes making sure to turn half way. If they look like they're drying out half way, spray them again with a bit more low calorie cooking spray.

      Potatoes are roughly 70 kcal/100g so add that to how ever many sprays of the 1cal spray.

  1. I put mine in the microwave for 5 mins without water instead of par boiling after they are cooled i put them in a food bag sprayed with fry light and crumble a beef oxo into it toss it around to coat all of the potato and cook for around 25 mins to half hour in my actifry they are very tasty
