There have been many debates in the past as to whether oats should be synned when they are used this way. So in our quest to bring you the most up to date, correct information I contacted Slimming World directly to ask if ground down oats needed to be synned.

It’s not a tweak!

I was told that you do not need to syn them as blitzing them does not alter the nutritional value. Also, as you are using them as you’re HEB the amount you can eat is restricted so there’s very little chance of you over eating them.

However, as with anything that could be considered a tweak, if using the oats this way affects your weight loss then you should avoid it.

Synning the sweetener

This recipe has been amended to take into account the new recommendations about synning sweetener. This will keep it syn free. If you want to add more sweetener then you should syn it at 0.5 syns per tablespoon.

As you will probably know Slimming World have brought out some new recommendations regarding the syn value of granulated sweeteners. Slimming World have confirmed what this change means.

Where there is 1 tbsp or more being used per serving they recommend members count 0.5 Syn per tbsp. If using smaller amounts, like a pinch or teaspoon, there’s no need to worry about Syns at all.

The recipe for this Syn Free Pumpkin Spiced Latte Waffles now uses 3/4 of a tablespoon of sweetener and a Coffee Shop Inspired Muller Light rather than fat free natural yogurt, so there’s no need to add any syns on for the sweetener itself.

This recipe has been amended to take into account the changes Slimming World have recently made to Healthy Extras.

To make a vegetarian version of this dish substitute the Muller Light for 175ml of Fat Free Natural yogurt flavoured with a shot of coffee.

It’s that time of year when we start seeing lots of Pumpkin Spiced recipes! So we thought we’d kick things off with this Syn Free Pumpkin Spiced Latte Baked Oats.

Syn free if you use the oats as your HEB, otherwise it’s 6 syns per portion.

If you can’t get hold of a pumpkin you can use some butternut squash instead. It works just as well.

Making the Puree

Just chop your squash/pumkin up pretty fine, then place in a microwave friendly tub with a lid & microwave on full power for 3 minutes.

Be careful when you lift it out as it will be VERY hot! Attack with a stick blender/blender & mix in the shot of coffee & spices. Takes about 4 minutes in all & much quicker than passing it through a sieve.

INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C
  2. Blitz the oats in a food processor until they are quite fine and set aside
  3. Cut a 100g piece of pumpkin or butternut squash. Cut off the peel, chop it into small chunks then place in a microwavable bowl. Cover and microwave for about 3 minutes or until it is soft enough to puree
  4. Puree the pumpkin or squash in a food processor, or pass through a sieve so it's smooth
  5. Take 50 - 70g of this puree and mix it with all the other ingredients. Stir well
  6. Spray the waffle mould with a little Frylight then pour in the waffle mixture
  7. Bake at 180°C for 25 - 30 minutes or until the waffles are firm to the touch
  8. Turn them out onto a baking tray and cook for a further 4 or 5 minutes
  9. Serve with some fresh fruit and some sweetened, flavoured Quark
