This Currywurst recipe is a slimming friendly twist on a traditional German street food and is perfect if you’re counting calories or following a plan like Weight Watchers.

We first came across this dish in Berlin a few years ago and it was one of the tastiest things we tried! As soon as we got home, we knew that we had to create a slimming friendly version that we could enjoy all year round.

If you haven’t heard of Currywurst then the basis of the dish is a sausage covered in curry ketchup and served with a side of chips. What’s not to love?

We’ve used Quorn Bratwurst Sausages in this recipe as they were the closest, slimming friendly thing that we could find to a traditional Frankfurter or Bratwurst. You can use whichever brand of sausages you prefer – just remember to adjust the nutritional values accordingly!

What diets is this Currywurst suitable for?

This Currywurst recipe is suitable for vegetarian and gluten free diets.

It can be made dairy free and vegan as long as you swap out the following ingredients for dairy free/vegan versions;

  • Quorn Bratwurst Sausages

Please make sure to double or triple check all of your ingredients if you’re cooking for people with allergies.

You don’t need much equipment to make this Currywurst recipe!

To get the smooth Currrywurst ketchup you will need to blend up the vegetables once they are cooked. You could do this in a soup maker, food processor or blender, but we find a hand blender the quickest and least messy way to do this!

We’ve used a good sized lidded pan in this recipe, and this is something that you will use over and over again. If you don’t have one or are looking to upgrade, then why not bag this beauty over on Amazon?

If you don’t have one, hand blenders are such a useful thing to have in the kitchen. We love this one as it is metal so doesn’t stain and can be used in hot liquids. Plus, it comes with a small food processor and an electric whisk attachment. You can pick one up on Amazon here.

How many calories are in this Currywurst?

There are 373 calories per portion in this Currywurst, which means it falls into our Everyday Light category.

This Currywurst is perfect if you’re following a calorie controlled diet and fits well with any one of the major diet plans such as Weight Watchers.

As a guide, an average man needs around 2,500kcal (10,500kJ) a day to maintain a healthy body weight. For an average woman, that figure is around 2,000kcal (8,400kJ) a day. Obviously, if your goal is to lose weight then you might want to adjust these slightly! You can read more about these recommendations on the NHS website.

Step 1

Add chopped onion, minced garlic, dry stock cubes, curry powder, balsamic vinegar, onion granules, garlic granules and garam masala to a large sauce pan with some low calorie cooking spray and soften over a medium heat.

Step 2

Add chopped carrots, tinned tomatoes and water to the pan and bring to the boil.

Step 3

Turn down the heat so the mix is simmering and put the lid on the plan. Let it simmer for 40 minutes.

Step 4

When the sauce is cooked, add the tomato puree, Worcestershire sauce and sweetener into the pan. Then take a stick blender and whizz up the ingredients. You are aiming for a smooth consistency. Add salt and pepper to taste. If you would like the sauce thicker, reduce over a low heat. If you want it thinner, add a little water until it is how you like it.

Step 5

Spritz a frying pan with low calorie cooking spray and cook the sausages. Once they are done, plate them up and pour over the sauce. You can also sprinkle over a little extra curry powder before serving!

How do you know when Currywurst is cooked?

You should cook the sauce for your Currywurst for around 40 minutes and then blend until smooth.

Standard advice here in the UK is to cook food until it has reached 70°C and stayed at that temperature for 2 minutes. This is to keep your family safe.

How long can you keep Currywurst in the fridge?

Once you’ve put it out, ideally you should eat it within 4 hours.

If you allow any leftovers to cool, make sure to refrigerate in a container with a lid and chill. You can keep leftovers of Currywurst in the fridge for approximately 3 days or so.

Can I freeze Currywurst?

Yes you can! We would suggest freezing the sauce and cooking the sausages when you want to enjoy some Currywurst. This recipe makes plenty of sauce so you can freeze any extra to enjoy later!

This recipe can be frozen, but please remember to do the following;

  • Freeze it as soon as it is cold enough.
  • Use a container or bag that is suitable for freezing.

Don’t forget to add a label with what it is, and on what date you put it in the freezer!

How do I reheat Currywurst?

From chilled: Place your Currywurst sauce in a microwave proof container with loosely fitting lid. Heat for around 4-7 minutes or until piping hot and then complete Step 5 of the recipe.

From frozen: Allow to defrost and then as above.

Hi Kelly, yes, on the recipe card you will see ‘servings’. If you click on the down arrow next to it , you can reduce the servings to 2. This will calculate the quantities of ingredients you need. Hope this helps.

I can’t find quorn bratwurst anywhere, is there any other close options, I’m not vegetarian just don’t like the texture of a normal. Sausage

Hi Jennifer, you could try Quorn Sausages which are a meat free version of a traditional British sausage. They come in a pack of 12 and are frozen. They can be cooked straight from frozen. Hope this helps.
