They may be delicious, but baked pastries are sadly not as slimming friendly as we’d like. If you’re always dreaming about your favourite bakery treats, we think you’re going to LOVE this Cherry Pie Turnover recipe. 

Beautifully simple, we’re using one of our classic slimming hacks to cut down the calories…it might look just like pastry, but there’s no pastry in sight in this recipe! We’ve used a low calorie tortilla wrap instead, and it works SO well.

Our recipe uses frozen cherries to create a syrupy filling that’s only as sweet as you like it to be – you’re in charge of adding the sweetener, so you can control just how sweet it gets. If your cherries are sweet enough, no need to add much sweetener. 

We love these served warm from the oven, with a swirl of low fat aerosol cream. It looks and tastes so much more indulgent than it really is!

How many calories are in these Cherry Pie Turnovers?

Each of these Cherry Pie Turnovers is 132 calories, meaning they’re ideal when following any of the larger diet plans such as Weight Watchers or if you’re counting calories.

The average woman needs around 2000kcal per day to maintain a healthy body weight, and men typically need slightly more at 2,500kcals, but you may want to reduce these if you are aiming to lose weight. You can find more information on the NHS website.

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 200ºC. Spray a large baking tray with low calorie cooking spray and use it to grease thoroughly.

Step 2

Make the cherry filling: Place a sieve over a measuring jug. Pour the defrosted cherries and juice into the sieve and allow the juice to drain into the jug. Place the drained cherries in a small saucepan.

Step 3

Measure the amount of juice in the jug and if you have less than 150ml, you will need to make it up to 150ml with cold water. If you have more than 150ml of juice, drain some off and discard until you are left with 150ml of juice.

Step 4

Pour the 150ml of juice (or juice and water mixture), into the saucepan with the cherries. Taste the cherries and their juice to find out how sweet they are. You need to decide if they need sweetening to suit your taste as cherries may vary in sweetness. We used 10g of white granulated sweetener to sweeten ours, but you may decide you need a little more or less. Add the sweetener to the cherries in the saucepan and stir in.

Step 5

In a small bowl, mix the cornflour with 3 tsp water until smooth. Place the saucepan containing the sweetened cherries and juice over a medium heat. Stir in the cornflour mixture and simmer gently for 3-5 minutes, until thickened and glossy. Set aside and leave to cool.

Step 6

To assemble the turnovers: Cut the wraps in half to make 8 semicircular pieces. Place a dessert spoonful of the cherry filling on one half of each semicircular wrap, leaving a wide gap around the edges.

Step 7

Brush around the edge of each semicircular wrap with beaten egg. Fold the wrap over the filling to make a triangle with one curved edge.

Step 8

Press the edges firmly with your fingertips to seal the turnovers. Crimp the edges by pressing down firmly with a fork. Repeat until you’ve made 8 turnovers, then place them on the large, greased baking tray. You may need to cook the turnovers in two batches depending on the size of your baking tray.

Step 9

Brush the tops with beaten egg and sprinkle with a little white granulated sweetener.

Place in the oven for 8-10 minutes or until golden. Allow to cool slightly and serve warm, either alone or with a swirl of reduced fat aerosol cream. Take care as the filling will be very hot.

How do you know when Cherry Pie Turnovers are cooked?

You should cook these Cherry Pie Turnovers in the oven until they’re golden brown. Keep an eye on them as they can catch and burn quiet easily. They should only need 8-10 minutes in the oven to be perfect.  

To keep your family safe, the advice here in the UK is to cook food until it has reached 70°C and stayed at that temperature for 2 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 4 large white low calorie tortilla wraps, 25cm in diameter
  • 400 g frozen, stoned, dark sweet cherries, defrosted and the juices kept
  • 10 g white granulated sweetener
  • 50 ml water (you may need more or less depending on the quantity of juice obtained from the defrosted cherries)
  • 3 tsp cornflour
  • 3 tsp water
  • 1 medium egg, beaten
  • 1 tsp white granulated sweetener to sprinkle on top

Instructions
