Jammy Hearts - Pinch of Nom Slimming Recipes

For the full list of ingredients and comprehensive instructions, please see the recipe card below. Before you scroll, there’s important stuff in the blurb!

Golden and crunchy, with a sticky sweet centre, these slimming-friendly Jammy Hearts are a special little treat. Perfect for Valentine’s day, they’re lovely and buttery, but still only 48 calories each!

Easier to make than you might think, we’ve used proper butter for this recipe, to make sure every heart-shaped biscuit has that irresistible crunch when you bite into it. We wouldn’t recommend trying to make these with reduced-fat spread – they won’t have the same magic!

Instead, to keep the calories down, we’ve replaced half of the sugar with granulated sweetener, along with picking up a jar of reduced-sugar jam. These little swaps make all the difference to the calorie count, without affecting the moreish flavour of the finished biscuits.

Whether you make these as a romantic date-night snack, or simply to enjoy with a cup of tea, they’ll have you hooked! It’s a good job they’re freezer-friendly so you can always keep a few on standby…

What diets are these Jammy Hearts suitable for?

These Jammy Hearts can be enjoyed on a vegetarian diet. If you’re cooking for people with allergies, be extra careful when checking ingredients and preparing food!

Do you need any special ingredients to make Jammy Hearts?

The ingredients for this recipe are nice and simple, but you will need a few bits of special equipment to make them. An electric hand whisk is not essential, but nice to have when you’re mixing together your butter, sugar and sweetener.

You’ll need a heart-shaped cookie cooker, measuring 6 x 5.5cm. This set of 6 from Amazon includes a variety of sizes, perfect for baking.

You’ll also need a piping bag, fitted with a plain nozzle. This reusable cotton piping bag comes with a few different nozzles and can be washed and used over and over again.

How many calories are in these Jammy Hearts?

There are 48 calories per portion in this Jammy Hearts recipe, which means it falls into our Everyday Light recipe category. If you’re counting calories or following one of the popular diet plans like Weight Watchers, this recipe fits in perfectly!

NHS guidelines suggest men should aim for 2,500 calories per day to maintain a healthy body weight, and women require around 2000 calories. Each person has different calorie requirements depending on their goal, so you may want to adjust your daily calorie intake according to your own personal goal.

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 160°C and line two baking trays with non-stick baking paper.

Step 2

Place the butter, caster sugar and sweetener in a medium mixing bowl and beat with an electric hand whisk or wooden spoon until light and fluffy.

Step 3

Add the flour and stir until combined. Squeeze the mixture together with clean hands to make a smooth ball. You may need to dampen your hands to help bring the dough together. Don’t knead or over-handle as this may make the dough tough.

Step 4

Lightly dust the work surface with a little flour. Evenly roll out the dough to a thickness of about 2-3 mm, and use a 6 x 5.5cm heart-shaped cutter to cut out 30 biscuits. You will need to gather up and re-roll the scraps of dough to make all 30 biscuits.

Step 5

Place the biscuits on two lined baking trays, leaving small gaps between each biscuit. Make a heart shaped indent in the middle of each biscuit. You can do this by gently pressing the back of a teaspoon handle into the dough or by using your fingers.

Step 6

Place the jam in a small bowl and stir until smooth. If your jam has bits of fruit in it, push it through a sieve to remove the bits. Once the jam is smooth, place it in a piping bag fitted with a small plain nozzle. Pipe a little jam into the heart shaped indent on each biscuit, taking care not to overfill as the jam will spread during baking.

Step 7

Place the biscuits in the preheated oven and bake for 8-10 minutes, or until lightly golden around the edges. Remove from the oven and leave the biscuits on the baking tray to cool completely. The biscuits will firm up and become crisp as they cool.

Step 8

Carefully remove the cooled biscuits from the baking trays and serve alone or as part of a selection of other teatime treats.

How do you know when Jammy Hearts are cooked?

You should cook these Jammy Hearts until they are just beginning to turn lightly golden. They should still be fairly pale in colour. This should take around 8-10 minutes, although it’s important to keep a close eye on them to avoid over-cooking.

Here in the UK, the standard advice is to cook food until it has reached 70°C and maintained that temperature for 2 minutes. This is to keep you and your family safe!

How long can you keep Jammy Hearts in the fridge?

You don’t need to keep leftover Jammy Hearts in the fridge. They will keep well stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Can I freeze Jammy Hearts?

Yes, you can freeze Jammy Hearts after baking. Just remember to do the following:

  • Make sure that you freeze them as soon as they are cold enough.
  • Choose a container or a bag that is suitable for freezing.
  • Place a piece of non-stick baking paper in-between each biscuit to make them easier to defrost.
  • Label your container with the name of the recipe and the date that you froze it on.

Next time you fancy a treat, leave the biscuits to defrost at room temperature.

Recipe notes

Tip: Make sure to use white granulated sweetener that has the same weight, texture and sweetness as sugar.
Tip: Use real butter rather than reduced-fat spread in this recipe to ensure your biscuits are crisp and have a buttery flavour.
Tip: Take care not to overcook the biscuits by keeping a close eye on them towards the end of the cooking time. They should be pale and just turning lightly golden around the edges.
