You can also change the spice mix to suit your taste – if you prefer some extra zing then add a little more chilli powder.

Hints & Tips

Below we added some of our communities most common hints and tips. We hope you find them useful.

I used cornflakes with smoked paprika and cayenne pepper
Instead of doritos I used cornflakes with seasoning and cooked them on airfry they came out really nice and crunchy
Better than KFC
A great fakeaway choice for a Saturday night I blitz the Doritos in a mini chopper to get a nice fine crumb I find it sticks better to the chicken
No eggs in the shop! Used few more sprays of low cal oil
Really fancied a zinger burger for weeks. I went to 6 different shops and all the eggs were sold out! I just added a few extra sprays of low cal spray after the cornflour. Did the trick!
Coating them!
I Found it difficult sprinkling it on so I put the crisp mixture onto a plate and dipped the chicken into it found it much easier to coat that way and got a much more even coating
Banging!!
My hint would be to give the chicken breast a good bash before coating. It will sit in the roll better and be easier to eat.
Tasty chicken burger
I’d maybe double the spice and Doritos mix as the mix in the recipe didn’t fully cover 4 large chicken breasts but it was really tasty served with sweet potato wedges, a bagel thin and salad with cherry tomatoes 🥰
Go to fakeaway
Always add cheese!!! Spice it up with jalapeños and some hot sauce!
Would flatten the chicken a bit more to fit the bun next time
2
Soo Tasty!
Used lightly salted tortilla chips instead but enhanced the flavour and kick by adding, pinch of salt, dried thyme, extra chilli powder and cracked black pepper. So crispy cooked in the air fryer.
Simple and delicious! Great to satisfy the 'takeway' craving
If you don't want it spicy don't add the chilli flakes, still delicious! Experiment with other dorito flavours! Great paired the the Pinch Of Nom BBQ Wedges!

Had to use normal ready salted crisps as my daughter had eaten the others I was going to use. Tasted great and she’s a fussy eater but cleaned her plate.
1
This was really tastyc 100% recommend giving this ago!
Once you’ve made your burger wrap it in foil and pop in the oven for 5 mins, makes the cheese gooey 😍
Use cheese & Chilli
Use cheese and chilli Doritos for extra flavour! Delicious
Absolutely delicious, worth cooking.
Really tasty & didn’t taste like it was coated in Doritos. Will definitely be a new favourite of mine. Easy to prep and cook which is always my favourite way. Had with a side salad and low fat chips cooked in the air fryer.
1
Extremely easy to cook, I cooked my chicken burgers in the air fryer which made them lovely and crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. A new favourite of the family.
Tangy cheese Doritos
If like me chilli heatwave Doritos are not for you this dish tastes just as fantastic using tangy cheese Doritos instead

Can you cook these in the air fryer?

Hi Victoria. We’ve not cooked it in an airfryer ourselves, but can’t see a reason why it wouldn’t work. Have a look at your manual to help you convert cooking times and temperatures.

Anyone got any tips for how I can stop the topping coming off the chicken when I turn it over!?! It just ends up stuck to the tray so I have to kid of scrape it off and plonk it back on. It tastes great so I really want to be able to make it properly!!

Hi Polly, sorry to hear you are having a bit of trouble with the KFC Zinger Burger. I’ve found lining the tray with greaseproof to help with this one and also make sure you have fully coated the chicken breast in the beaten egg before you try to add the topping. You could also try pouring the topping onto a clean plate and dip the chicken breast into the mix after the egg which should also help it stick. Hope that helps!

How long do you cook/reheat for, once cooked/frozen & defrosted?

Reply

    HollyTuesday 8th September 2020

Hi Denise, Allow to fully defrost before reheating
Microwave: Place in a microwave proof container with loosely fitting lid and heat for 4-7 minutes until piping hot.
Oven: Place on a baking tray and place into the middle of an oven preheated to 180°C for around 10 minutes, until piping hot throughout.

Do I need to use chili heat wave Doritos or can I just use normal Doritos will it change the flavor and the spiciness of it? Is that a contributing factor for the taste of the zinger or is it not that serious I’m in the US so I can’t get the chili heat wave Doritos that’s why I ask

Reply

    HollyThursday 3rd September 2020

Hey Rheesa, you can use any flavour of Doritos to make the KFC Zinger Burger some members of our facebook community add extra chilli powder to the mix so that might add a little extra heat to the Dorito topping. You may also need to alter the calories accordingly have a look at this guide which shows you how we work out our nutritional information https://pinchofnom.com/how-to-work-out-calories-and-points-in-a-recipe/

I made these last night and my family loved them.. I added 2 tsps of chilli powder because my family like it with a bit more spice. I didn’t have onion and garlic granules so I finely chopped 1/2 medium onion and crushed 3 garlic cloves – it was lovely and didn’t affect the coating being applied or staying on.
I am vegetarian so tried the coating on a tofu burger that I made and it worked well & tasted delicious. It was so nice that the chicken and tofu burger will be making appearance on our family Christmas eve menu. Thanks for making it available. x
