Marmite Mushrooms on Toast - Pinch of Nom Slimming Recipes

For the full list of ingredients and comprehensive instructions, please see the recipe card at the end of this post. Before you scroll, there’s important stuff to know in the blurb!

If you want a quick and easy breakfast that will wake you right up, these Marmite Mushrooms are the dish for you. Super simple to put together with easy to find ingredients, it’s a wonderfully savoury twist on the classic mushrooms on toast!

There is nothing subtle about the flavours here with intense umami from the Marmite, meaty mushrooms and a rich, creamy sauce to mop up with wholemeal toast. Even better, it’s on the table in less than 15 minutes. It’s also adaptable to many different diets: use gluten free bread, dairy free soft cheese and it still works!

Filling and flavourful, after trying this dish you’ll soon discover that it’s true what they say: you’ll either love it or hate it!

What diets are Marmite Mushrooms on Toast suitable for?

This Marmite Mushrooms on Toast is vegetarian, and can be made suitable for gluten free and vegan diets by swapping out the following ingredients for gluten free and/or vegan alternatives:

  • Marmite (yeast extract)
  • Wholemeal bread
  • Philadelphia Light

You can find vegan alternatives to soft cheese that work really well in this recipe, and can be found in the Free From aisle at the supermarket.

Please make sure to double or triple check all of your ingredients if you’re cooking for people with allergies.

Do you need any special ingredients to make Marmite Mushrooms on Toast?

Nope! You can substitute Philadelphia for a different brand of soft cheese if you’d like, just make sure it’s a lighter version to keep the calories low.

Hints & Tips

Below we added some of our communities most common hints and tips. We hope you find them useful.

NEW TIP
Delicious, quick and easy!
I make this dish a lot as it’s so fast and delicious!! I didn’t have any fresh herbs in this time so I added dried parsley and some garlic granules and black pepper. Yum!!
Instead of using toast I used bagel thins, scrumptious!
1
Nice breakfast
This is my second attempt. I reduced the marmite to 1/2 a teaspoon and it was delicious. I only had warburtons thins but great. Also it was the first recipe I located quickly by using my new index book for all recipes I’ve cooked so far. So fast!
Made with truffle flavour marmite and a mix of chestnut and oyster mushrooms
So versatile, literally have them with anything!
I mix this recipe up. Enjoy them on a bagel thin, on a steak or just with a side salad for a low carb meal. Delicious everytime!
I forget to get chives so I thinly sliced the ends of a spring onion and sprinkled on the top. Tasted amazing.
Not everyone loves Marmite
My husband doesn't like Marmite, so I did the recipe as normal but added a teaspoon of fresh thyme instead of Marmite, then topped off with a sprinkle of dried parsley (only because I had no fresh)..... delicious!!
Love Marmite Mushrooms, could happily eat this every day
I like my Marmite Mushrooms for lunch with a side salad on toasted pitta bread. I add a red or white onion to my mushrooms which works really well and is a great alternative to chives if you don’t have
Doesn’t feel like a naughty breakfast when on a diet
I use soda bread for that extra taste
So quick and easy to make. Add an egg for extra "pop"
Mushrooms are so low in calories, add more!
Without changing the sauce ingredients, you can add an extra 50g of mushrooms without impacting this recipe.
Favourite low calorie breakfast. Low carb? Replace bread with rocket
Gorgeous strong marmite flavour with a creamy texture
I added onions at the beginning of the recipe, and served with griddled tomatoes. A delicious brunch.
A great breakfast alternative.
This is so so so easy and absolutely delicious. It feels a bit naughty and makes a change from oats or fruit. I have made this with chestnut mushrooms too which gives a slightly nutty flavour.

How do you know when this Marmite Mushrooms on Toast is cooked?

You should cook the mushrooms until they’re soft and the soft cheese has melted fully. This takes around 8 minutes on the stove.

Standard advice here in the UK is to cook food until it has reached 70°C and stayed at that temperature for 2 minutes. This is to keep your family safe.

How long can you keep Marmite Mushrooms on Toast in the fridge?

Once you’ve put it out, ideally you should eat it within 4 hours.

If you allow any leftovers to cool, make sure to refrigerate in a container with a lid and chill.  You can keep leftover Marmite Mushrooms on Toast in the fridge for approximately 3 days or so. Although the recipe is for a single portion, you can double up the recipe and keep the Marmite mushrooms in the fridge for a quick breakfast another day!

Can I freeze Marmite Mushrooms on Toast?

The texture of the soft cheese can be affected by freezing, so we’d recommend not freezing this recipe. We’ve given the ingredients for a single portion though, so no need for any food waste here!

How do I reheat Marmite Mushrooms on Toast?

From chilled: Place in a microwave proof container with loosely fitting lid and heat for 4-7

minutes until piping hot.

This sounds yummy and I am definitely going to give it a go – wfh means hot breakfasts most days of the week (bonus!) I have a copy of ‘The little marmite cookbook’ which has a recipe for ‘smoked haddock baked spud with marmite cheese sauce’ – the recipe was a bit faffy tbh, but this recipe is so straightforward I feel inspired to give it another go too. Thank you PONOM!

These are AMAZING! Had them for breakfast this morning, I was worried they would taste too marmitey so only used half a tsp but next time will use more. I also think these would be great as a sauce over steak (or quorn peppered steaks in my case).
