Your favourite bakery snack has been given a Pinch of Nom makeover! Like any pastry-based food, the traditional steak pastries that you get from the bakery are usually buttery and high in calories. Our version has all the flavour, but it’s a much lighter option that’s perfect for lunch. 

We’ve seen members of our Facebook Group making these Steak Bakes using tinned beef in gravy, and we thought it might be nice to create a version with a tasty homemade filling. Using 5% lean steak mince really helps to cut down on calories, while still making for a meaty, savoury filling with a rich gravy. 

Rather than pastry, this recipe uses sandwich thins to help our Steak Bakes fit into whichever diet plan you’re following. When they’re baked in the oven with the lean mince filling, we guarantee they’ll turn out golden brown, crispy and so delicious. 

What diets are these Steak Bakes suitable for?

These Steak Bakes are dairy free and can be enjoyed on a gluten free diet as long as you substitute the following ingredients for suitable gluten free alternatives:

  • White or brown sandwich thins
  • Beef stock cube
  • Use Henderson’s relish rather than Worcestershire sauce

If you’re cooking for people with allergies, be extra careful when checking ingredients and preparing food!

Do you need any special ingredients to make Steak Bakes?

All of the ingredients you need to make this recipe should be easy to find in your usual supermarket. We used soft sliced sandwich thins made by Warburton’s, but some supermarkets also make their own versions. They can typically be found in the bakery aisle. 

We’ve used 5% lean beef steak mince, although the non steak version will work just as well.

Hints & Tips

Added finely diced mushrooms
I added finely diced mushrooms and mixed herbs.
I added some peas to mine but they are great! A firm favourite with the whole family
Use lean pork mince
To change these regulars up I used lean pork mince and they were superb.
Get a Crunch
I love the steak bakes, I like a bit of crunch when I bite into mine, so I leave them in an extra 5 minutes, this is then perfect if you want a crunch as well.
Steak bake
I used Quorn mince instead for a vegetarian option.
Amazing!
I added a little sage on the top of mine, they turn out great and are loved by all the family!

I had some mixture left over from the Steak and Chip Pie. As I don't like waste I used it for Steak bakes, my work mates in our local hospital love them....thanks PON I have to make them regularly 😁

Great simple dish, easy to double up!
I let the beef cool completely so easier to spoon in (ice cream scoop a perfect size)

Easy and Tasty!
Easy to make, can freeze the whole thing. I cooked for 7 minutes longer that recipe said as wanted it crispier if not is a little toasted on one side tasting & still slightly bready. Can be adapted for all sorts of other fillings.

Loved this recipe but can easily be adapted to many different fillings. Don’t overfill, if you want a deep filled pie choose a different recipe, this is ideal as it is and a great healthy alternative to that well know high street bakery!
So much tastier than the shop bought ones.
I like to make my mix the day before to give it a good chance to cool down before filling the sandwich thins. I Cook them in batches to ensure there is always some in the freezer, a selection of white & brown ones.
I like to bulk out my mix by adding lentils for lots more mix & extra protein.

How many calories are in these Steak Bakes?

There are 179 calories in each Steak Bake, which means this recipe falls into our Everyday Light recipe category. If you’re counting calories or following one of the popular diet plans like Weight Watchers, this recipe fits in perfectly!

NHS guidelines suggest men should aim for 2,500 calories per day to maintain a healthy body weight, and women require around 2000 calories. Each person has different calorie requirements depending on their goal, so you may want to adjust your daily calorie intake according to your own personal goal.

Step 1

Line a large baking tray with a sheet of non-stick baking paper.

Spray a small saucepan with low calorie cooking spray and place over a medium heat. Add the onion and cook for about 2 minutes. Add the beef steak mince and cook for 2-3 minutes until browned on all sides. Stir in the stock, Worcestershire sauce or Henderson’s relish and the garlic granules.

Step 3

Reduce the heat to low, cover with a lid and simmer gently for 20 minutes. Place the cornflour and 2 tsp water in a small bowl and stir until smooth. Stir into the beef mixture and increase the heat to medium. Simmer, uncovered, for 4-5 minutes until the gravy has thickened. Taste and season with black pepper. We found there was no need to add salt. Set aside and allow to cool slightly.

Step 4

Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 180ºC. Split the sandwich thins in half and lay out on a chopping board. Divide the beef mixture into 6 portions.

Place a portion of the slightly cooled beef mixture onto each of the 6 sandwich thin halves, leaving a 1cm gap around the edge.

Brush beaten egg around the edge and place one of the remaining sandwich thin halves on top of the filling. Press the centre of the lid down gently with a flat hand, then press around the edges to seal. Use a fork to crimp the edges and seal well. Repeat until you’ve made 6 bakes.

Step 7

Place the bakes on the lined baking tray and brush all over with the remaining egg. Place in the preheated oven and bake for about 10 minutes or until golden brown.

Step 8

Remove from the oven and place on a cooling rack. You can serve these hot or cold, but we prefer them served hot. Serve with Homemade Oven Chips or other accompaniment of your choice.

How do you know when the Steak Bakes are cooked?

You should cook the filling until the beef mince has browned and cooked all the way through and the sauce has thickened. Cook the Steak Bakes in the oven for 10 minutes, until they have turned golden brown. 

Here in the UK, the standard advice is to cook food until it has reached 70°C and maintained that temperature for 2 minutes. This is to keep you and your family safe! 

How long can you keep Steak Bakes in the fridge?

Once you’ve served this recipe, you’ll ideally need to eat it within 4 hours.

You can store any leftover Steak Bakes in the fridge for up to 2 days. Make sure that you allow them to cool before putting them in a container with a lid and chilling in the refrigerator. 

Can I freeze Steak Bakes?

Yes you can! This recipe can be frozen, but please remember to do the following;

  • Make sure that you freeze it as soon as it is cold enough.
  • Choose a container or a bag that is suitable for freezing.
  • Label your dish with the name of the recipe and the date that you froze it on.

How do I reheat Steak Bakes?

Ingredients

  • 6 sliced soft white or brown sandwich thins
  • 250 g 5% fat beef steak mince or 5% beef mince
  • 1 small onion, peeled and finely chopped
  • ½ beef stock cube made up with 150ml boiling water
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce or Henderson's relish
  • ¼ tsp garlic granules
  • 2 tsp cornflour
  • 2 tsp water
  • 1 medium egg, beaten with a fork
  • black pepper, to taste
  • low calorie cooking spray

I know they can be frozen, however if j wanted to take them to work could they be reheated in the microwave?

    Hey Philipp, These are best reheated in the oven at 180ºC for 5-10 minutes until piping hot throughout to retain their crispness. You can reheat in the microwave but they may go a little soggy but should still taste great!
