Half Syn Veggie Meatballs with Onions and Mustard Sauce

Being an awkward vegetarian, I often walk into the Scandinavian furniture shop that we daren’t set foot in at the weekend, yearning for meatballs and whatever lovely sauce comes with it.

But I can’t. So I get on, buy a toilet brush, four candles and a tree and head on home. I could have also bought some sauces to try and make my own version of the dish, a better way of achieving this, however, is to make a very low syn alternative, using my healthy extra allowance of dairy.

The Philadelphia

75g of Philadelphia Light counts as 1 Healthy Extra A allowance, so as this Half Syn Veggie Meatballs with Onions and Mustard Sauce recipe will serve 2 people that’s half an HEA per portion. You could, of course, Syn the Philadelphia if you prefer.

The Mustard

You can add more or less mustard depending on your personal taste, but as always, don’t forget to adjust the Syn value if necessary.

Frylight

Whenever we need to replace oil in cooking we use Frylight. Perfect for everyday frying and cooking, it delivers exactly one calorie per spray, which makes it Syn free! The Sunflower or Olive Oil flavours are ideal for this Half Syn Veggie Meatballs with Onions and Mustard Sauce recipe.

  2. Once the meatballs are browned, add the onions and garlic and fry until soft and golden
  3. Meanwhile, mix together the Philadelphia, mustard and parsley and add to a saucepan
  4. Heat gently until the mixture loosens up, but don’t let it boil. Stir and keep a beady eye! This should take only a couple of minutes
  5. Season with salt and pepper. If the sauce still seems a bit… stiff, add a tablespoon or two of water and mix in to loosen further
  6. Once everything is prepared, plate up the meatballs and pour the sauce over. Et voila!
