Despite travelling to the US and Canada many times, we’d never tried bacon and maple syrup together. To be honest it wasn’t a combination that has ever taken our fancy.

In anticipation of Pancake Day we asked our Facebook group for their favourite flavours, and Bacon, Maple and Blueberry was one of the most popular ones.

So, we thought we’d give it a go…..and we’re glad we did! These Low Syn Bacon, Maple and Blueberry Pancakes have become a firm favourite of ours.

These Low Syn Bacon, Maple and Blueberry Pancakes have become a firm favourite of ours.

How do we make these Low Syn Bacon, Maple and Blueberry Pancakes low syn?

Usually, you’d make pancakes with some oil, but oil + Slimming World = Syns. This is where Sunflower Frylight comes in!

Whenever we need to replace oil in cooking we use Frylight, and Sunflower Frylight is just perfect for Pancake day.

Frylight is also perfect for everyday frying and cooking, it delivers exactly one calorie per spray, which makes it Syn free!

What’s more, Sunflower Frylight contains NO artificial ingredients.

Sunflower Frylight is ideal for this Low Syn Bacon, Maple and Blueberry Pancakes recipe.

Next, the ingredients!

These Low Syn Bacon, Maple and Blueberry Pancakes are only so low in Syns if you use a proportion of one of your Healthy Extra A & Healthy Extra B. If you don’t then you will have to Syn them accordingly.

Surprising as it may seem, maple syrup is only half a syn per teaspoon, and the blueberries are a speed food, so that’s an added bonus!

Do I need to Syn the sweetener in these Low Syn Bacon, Maple and Blueberry Pancakes?

As you will probably know Slimming World recently brought out some new recommendations regarding the syn value of granulated sweeteners.

Bacon, Maple and Blueberry Pancakes | Slimming World & Weight Watchers Friendly

Where there is 1 tbsp or more being used per serving Slimming World recommends that members count 0.5 Syn per tbsp.

If using smaller amounts, like a pinch or teaspoon, there’s no need to worry about Syns at all.

The recipe for these Low Syn Bacon, Maple and Blueberry Pancakes uses 1/2 a tablespoon of sweetener. That’s half a tablespoon per portion, so there’s no need to add any Syns on for the sweetener itself.

If you don’t want to use your Healthy Extra A or Healthy Extra B then they will be 10 Syns for the lot.

Why have you changed from blitzed oats to Ready Brek?

Slimming World are forever reviewing ingredients and recipes. Although the Healthy Extra B is a measured amount, they have stated that the purpose of oats as a Healthy Extra B is that they expand and are filling on consumption.

As Ready Brek is being used in its original form and is again a measured amount for your Healthy Extra B, there’s no chance of it being used incorrectly in this recipe.

We also happen to think the texture of the pancakes is much better when using Ready Brek!

    1. Hi Katy
We have a number of recipes on the site that use blitzed oats, and when we posted the first one we contacted Slimming World directly to check this with them.
They confirmed that you do not have to syn oats if you blitz them to use them in this way. There are 2 reasons for this. Firstly, putting the oats in a food processor does not alter the nutritional value. Secondly, as you are using them as you’re HEB the amount you can eat is restricted so there’s very little chance of you over eating them. If you do have more than the HEB allowance (or choose not to use it as your HEB) you would have to syn it anyway.
We always make sure that we supply the correct information regarding syns and tweaks.

    1. Hi Katy
When we first started making recipes with blitzed oats we knew there would be some debate about whether it should be synned or not, so we thought we’d get the info straight from the horses mouth so to speak, and contact SW directly to avoid any confusion.

  1. If i just had the pancakes without the chocolate and the banana how many syns would that be?? Really want to try these so plz help tia

    1. Hi Liz
If you just use our basic oat pancake recipe and count the oats as your HEb, then the pancakes will be free. It’s the addition of the extras, such as chocolate, cooked banana, maple syrup etc that adds the syns. Enjoy!

    1. Hi Gemma
You can use any basic porridge oats for these. 40g of oats is your HEB allowance.
Now you can also use Ready Brek, as it’s recently been added to the HEB list. 🙂

  2. Just made this for the first time. It was absolute heaven – had to share with my 3 year old though – but hey, less syns! Thank you guys for all of your amazing recipes

  3. Thanks for the lovely recipe. Look forward to trying it! It says that blueberries aren’t speed food but I understood that this changed recenty and that they are now speed. Please can you you clarify?
    Thanks.

    1. Hi Annabel
The blurb has now been edited to confirm that blueberries are indeed a speed food. They were added to the list of speed foods in January 2018. 🙂

    1. Hi Lisa
You can use Ready Brek, which gives a smooth, fluffy pancake. 40g is an HEB choice. 🙂
      Thanks for getting in touch!

  4. Just made these with fuit & syrup they were amazing, I’ve tried many slimming world friendly dessert/pudding dishes these were the best variation I’ve had hands down. Amazing with most definitely be making & eating these again & again
