We’ve used shop bought low fat meatballs for this Baked Spicy Meatballs recipe, so just make sure you check the Points and calories etc of whichever ones you choose. Of course, if you’d prefer you can also make your own using 5% minced beef!
We like to serve these Baked Spicy Meatballs with spaghetti and green beans, but they work well with any pasta really. You could even have them with a jacket potato – they’re super versatile and really tasty!

How many calories are in these Baked Spicy Meatballs?
There are 270 calories per portion in these Baked Spicy Meatballs, which means they fall into our Everyday Light category.
These Baked Spicy Meatballs are perfect if you’re following a calorie controlled diet and fit well with any one of the major diet plans such as Weight Watchers.

Step 1
Preheat the oven to 160ºC. Spray a large frying pan with low calorie cooking spray and set on a medium heat. Add the meatballs and fry for 4 minutes until browned on all sides.
Step 2
Add the garlic and chillies and cook for 2 minutes, being careful not to burn it. Stir in the passata and oregano.
Step 3
Pour the sauce and meatballs into a large ovenproof dish.
Top with chunks of the mozzarella and sprinkle over the parmesan. Bake for 35 minutes until the cheese is golden brown and bubbling and meatballs are cooked through. Serve with your choice of accompaniment.

How do you know when these Baked Spicy Meatballs are cooked?
You’ll need to make sure that the outsides of the meatballs are brown before you place them into the ovenproof dish.
Bake for 35 minutes or until the cheese is golden.
Standard advice here in the UK is to cook food until it has reached 70°C and stayed at that temperature for 2 minutes. This is to keep your family safe.
How long can you keep Baked Spicy Meatballs in the fridge?
Once you’ve put it out, ideally you should eat it within 4 hours.
If you allow any leftovers to cool, make sure to refrigerate in a container with a lid and chill. You can keep leftovers of Baked Spicy Meatballs in the fridge for approximately 3 days or so.
Can I freeze Baked Spicy Meatballs?
Yes you can! This recipe can be frozen, but please remember to do the following;

- From frozen: Allow to defrost, and heat covered in the microwave for 3-5 minutes then stir. Cook for a further 5-7 minutes until piping hot.

Can I cook the meatballs and sauce then freeze it. Then add the mozzarella when defrosted .

Hey Charlie, the weight of the meatballs depends on the brand you are using. Most supermarkets do their own version of reduced fat meatball so there’s plenty of choice! Hope that helps!

Oh my word – just made these for dinner and they are lush! Made my own meatballs with 5% fat pork, onions and mixed herbs, used the sauce but added chunky peppers to it as well.
I had them with courgetti but the rest of the family had pasta. They all loved them. Think this will be a new favourite in our house.
