Once you’ve tried this easy recipe, you’ll wonder why you’ve never made your own Ketchup before! It’s our take on the red sauce that goes with everything, and it says goodbye to all the sugar and additives that you’ll find in shop-bought versions.
Instead, a handful of store cupboard herbs, some chopped tomatoes and a splash of white wine vinegar is all it takes to create your very own homemade dip. Our top tip for this recipe is to use the best quality tinned tomatoes that you can – it’ll make such a difference to the end result. There are ways to work around cheaper tomatoes, such as reducing for a bit longer if your tinned tomatoes are more watery, and being careful with the white wine vinegar if they’re more acidic.
You’ll also see that we’ve used a touch of xanthan gum in this recipe, although you can leave it out if you prefer. Xanthan gum is a commonly used ingredient in lots of shop-bought foods, particularly things that need thickening or stabilising. We love the way it makes the texture of this Ketchup that bit more syrupy and similar to store versions.
Like a bit of extra flavour? You can add 1 tbsp of sriracha for spicy ketchup or 2 tsp sweet smoked paprika for smoky ketchup!
What diets is this Ketchup suitable for?
This Ketchup recipe is suitable for vegetarians, vegans, gluten-free and dairy-free diets. Please make sure to double or triple check all of your ingredients if you’re cooking for people with allergies.
Do you need any special ingredients to make Ketchup?
Xanthan gum is an optional ingredient, although we highly recommend giving it a try. It should be available in most supermarkets, often in the free-from aisle.

If you can’t find xanthan gum in your usual supermarket, you can also pick it up online from Amazon.
You’ll need a hand blender to blitz your tomatoes into a silky smooth ketchup. This one will come in handy for everything from soups and sauces to smoothies.

This Ketchup is perfect if you’re following a calorie controlled diet, and fits well with any one of the major diet plans such as Weight Watchers.
As a guide, an average man needs around 2,500kcal (10,500kJ) a day to maintain a healthy body weight. For an average woman, that figure is around 2,000kcal (8,400kJ) a day. Obviously, if your goal is to lose weight then you might want to adjust these slightly! You can read more about these recommendations on the NHS website.
Step 1
Place a saucepan over a medium heat. Add all the ingredients except the xanthan gum to the saucepan and stir.
Step 2
Bring the sauce to the boil and then reduce the heat to a gently bubbling simmer. Let simmer for 10 minutes, until it’s reduced to the thickness of ketchup.
Step 3
Take the pan off the heat. If using xanthan gum add it to the pan now and quickly stir through. Don’t worry about any lumps as they will be removed when blending.
Step 4
Use the hand blender to blitz the sauce until smooth. Leave to cool in the pan.
Step 5
Pour the sauce into a sterilised glass jar or bottle and, once cooled, keep in the fridge. Use within 3 weeks of making.
What could I serve with this Ketchup?
We know a lot of people will agree that Ketchup goes with anything and everything! We love it best of all when it’s smothered on a burger or served with something we can dunk into it. Any kind of chips or fries will do the job nicely!
How do you know when Ketchup is cooked?
You should cook this Ketchup until the mixture has reduced and thickened to the same consistency you would expect from shop-bought ketchup. This should take around 10 minutes, although you may need to reduce for longer if your tinned tomatoes are more watery.
Here in the UK, the standard advice is to cook food until it has reached 70°C and maintained that temperature for 2 minutes. This is to keep you and your family safe!
How long can you keep Ketchup in the fridge?
You can keep this Ketchup for up to 3 weeks as long as it is stored correctly in a sterilised jar or bottle. To sterilise your container, wash the glass jars or bottles in the dishwasher or with hot soapy water. Without drying them, place them on a baking tray into a preheated oven at 180ºC for 15 mins. Remove from the oven and pour or spoon your ketchup into them.
Can I freeze Ketchup?
Yes you can! We love to freeze this Ketchup in individual portions. Simply freeze the sauce in an ice cube tray if you prefer, and just pop a portion out when needed.
Don’t forget to add a label with what it is, and on what date you put it in the freezer!
