BBQ Sauce

Step away from the BBQ Sauce bottle as our slimming-friendly version is a fab replacement if you’re counting calories or following a plan like Weight Watchers.

This is the one we use for our Hunters Chicken and Pulled Pork and it’s that good we thought it deserved a recipe all of it’s own, to make it easier for you guys to find and follow.

We love BBQ Sauce, but like many of our favourite things, it’s not very slimming friendly. There are a lot of BBQ sauce recipes out there and this is our version and our favourite…not that we’re biased or anything!

Just because we use it on Hunters Chicken and Pulled Pork it doesn’t mean we can’t use it for other things right?

You’ll notice that this recipe calls for BBQ seasoning, we like to use Schwartz Perfect Shake BBQ Classic Seasoning. If you don’t have this you can use any BBQ seasoning. Just remember to check the nutritional values of whatever you use, as you’d be amazed at how many calories some seasonings & rubs have due to the high sugar content!

You can find the Schwartz Seasoning here on Schwartz Perfect Shake Classic BBQ Herb and Spice Blend, 44g or in most supermarkets.

You can make this sauce in advance, and keep it in the fridge for up to a week, so just pop it in a clean airtight container and you’ll have a BBQ Sauce on tap!

What is Sukrin?

We use Sukrin 1 which is an all-natural granulated stevia sweetener alternative to sugar with zero calories. You can grab Sukrin 1 over onAmazon UK.

Sukrin 1 doesn’t have that strange after taste that a lot of artificial sweeteners do! It also shares the exact same sweetness and weight to sugar – which makes it really easy to substitute in recipes like this BBQ Sauce.

If you are using a powdered sweetener, then please check how it compares to sugar. In some cases you’ll need to use less, as powdered sweeteners weigh less.

That being said you don’t have to use Sukrin – there are lots of other high quality granulated sweeteners available from the supermarket, such as Canderel Sugarly, and Natvia.

INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Spray a frying pan with Low calorie cooking spray and cook the onions and garlic until the onions are soft
  2. Add the tomato puree & tinned tomatoes and cook for 5 minutes on high, stirring frequently
  3. Add in the rest of the ingredients, lower the heat and simmer for 20 minutes, the sauce should thicken nicely
  4. If the sauce seems a bit too thick just add a tiny bit of water and stir well
  5. You can use this sauce as it is or if you prefer a smoother BBQ sauce just blitz it in a food processor until you get the desired consistency
  6. You can make this in advance, just put it in a sterilised airtight container and store in the fridge until ready to use

Especially things such as; 

- Stock cubes
- Soy sauce - substitute with Tamari.
- Worcestershire sauce - substitute with Henderson’s Relish.
- Etc.

      Yes you can use any other brand of sweetener. We use Sukrin as it is the same weight, consistency and sweetness as normal sugar so you can replace it in recipes on a 1 to 1 basis. If you want to use a different one then you should check the conversion rates of that particular brand. You can usually find this info on the sweeteners website
