With layers of Jaffa Cakes, mandarin orange segments, orange jelly, chocolate custard and topped with light aerosol cream, you’ll find it hard to believe this glorious pud could be slimming friendly!

A few clever swaps mean you can serve up this rich sweet treat for just 169 calories per portion. It’s the ideal way to finish off a meal, with the perfect balance of fruity and chocolatey layers. 

Once you’ve tried this you might never go back to plain trifle again!

This Chocolate Orange Trifles recipe is ideal when following any of the larger diet plans such as Weight Watchers or counting calories.

Step 1

Place a quartered Jaffa Cake in the base of each glass serving dish.

Step 2

To make the jelly: place the jelly crystals in a heatproof jug. Add the boiling water and stir until dissolved.

Add the cold water to the jelly in the jug and stir. Set aside and leave to cool.

Step 4

Divide the drained mandarin oranges between the dishes, placing them on top of the Jaffa Cakes.

Pour the cooled jelly over the mandarin oranges and place in the fridge to set for a minimum of 2 hours.

To make the custard: place the egg yolk, cornflour, cocoa powder, sweetener and 1 tbsp of the milk in a heatproof jug. Mix until smooth.

Place the remaining milk in a small saucepan and place over a medium heat. Heat until steaming hot, taking care not to let the milk burn or boil over.

Pour the steaming hot milk into the jug containing the cocoa mixture and stir well.

Pour back into the saucepan and return to a medium heat. Stir constantly with a wooden spoon or balloon whisk and cook gently for about 5 minutes, until small bubbles appear on the surface and the custard thickens. As soon as the custard has thickened, remove it from the heat. Don’t overheat or boil the custard, as it may split or burn.

Scrape the custard into a small bowl to cool. Cover the surface of the custard with cling film to stop a skin forming.

When the custard is just cool, remove the cling film and stir with a balloon whisk to ensure it’s smooth.

Divide the custard between the dishes and spread out to make a thin layer.

Place in the fridge and chill for about 30 minutes.

How do you know when Chocolate Orange Trifles are ready?

You’ll need to leave these Chocolate Orange Trifles to set before you can assemble the final layers. Once you have poured in your jelly, they will need around 2 hours in the fridge. It’s important not to add the jelly when it is too hot as it could crack the glass dishes. 

You will also need to let your custard cool a little before adding it on top of the set jelly. If the custard is too hot it could melt the jelly. 

Once the custard is added, the trifles will need at least 30 minutes in the fridge before they are ready to serve. 

How long can you keep Chocolate Orange Trifles in the fridge?

Once you’ve put it out, ideally you should eat it within 4 hours.

You can keep these trifles in the fridge for 1 or 2 days but it’s important to cover them and store them in the fridge BEFORE you have added the cream topping and chocolate decoration. 

If you refrigerate them with the aerosol cream on top there is a chance that the cream will collapse and need to be added again before serving.

Ingredients

  • 4 Jaffa Cakes cut into quarters
  • 298 g tinned mandarin oranges in juice, drained
  • 11.5 g sachet of sugar free orange jelly crystals
  • 285 ml boiling water
  • 285 ml cold water

For the chocolate custard

  • 250 ml semi skimmed milk
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 tbsp cornflour
  • 2 tsp cocoa powder
  • 30 g white granulated sweetener

To decorate

  • 4 squirts of light aerosol cream
  • 4 squirts of Choc Shot Orange Spice liquid syrup
  • 4 small chocolate orange segments from a Chocolate Orange chocolate bar

4 x 250ml individual glass serving dishes

Tip: Make sure you allow the jelly to cool before pouring it into the glass dishes. Hot jelly may crack your glass dishes.
Tip: Make sure that the jelly has set firmly and the custard has cooled before assembling the trifles. Placing warm custard on the jelly could make it dissolve.

    Hey Toni, yes you could make one large trifle, it may need a little longer to set in the fridge but should be fine in other ways. Hope that helps!

    Hi Vera, we use white granulated sweetener for this recipe rather than sugar but if it still too sweet for your taste then as you have said you can use less to suit. Hope that helps!
