There’s no need to pop to the bakery with this gooey-in-the-middle recipe on standby. Inspired by your mouth-watering photos and posts in our Facebook group, we decided to try giving our own version of Cheese and Onion Bakes a whirl.
Just like with our hugely-popular Steak Bakes, we’ve said goodbye to pastry and lowered the calories with a crispy pair of sandwich thins. Our slimming-friendly filling of melty onion and reduced-fat Cheddar means you can tuck in without compromising on classic, melty cheesiness.
Since they’re nice and light at 211 calories per bake, there’s nothing to stop you enjoying them as a light snack throughout the day. If you’re in the mood for a heartier meal, serve them with a crispy mixed salad or a hearty portion of Homemade Chips – just don’t forget your favourite sauce!

How many calories are in Cheese and Onion Bakes?

Step 1
Preheat the oven to 180°C. Line a large baking tray with a sheet of non-stick baking paper.
Step 2
Place the cheese and onion in a medium mixing bowl and season to taste with salt and black pepper. Stir until evenly mixed.
Step 3
Split the sandwich thins in half and lay them out on a chopping board. Divide the cheese and onion mixture into 6 portions. Place a portion of the mixture onto each of 6 sandwich thin halves. Pile the mixture up in the middle, then gently press down to form a square, leaving a 1cm gap around the edge.
Step 4
Brush beaten egg around the edge and place one of the remaining sandwich thin halves on top of the filling. Press the centre of the lid down gently with a flat hand, then press around the edges to seal. Use a fork to crimp the edges and seal well. Repeat until you’ve made 6 bakes.
Step 5
Place the bakes on the lined baking tray and brush all over with the remaining egg. Place in the preheated oven and bake for about 10 minutes or until golden brown.

You’ll need to cook Cheese and Onion Bakes for around 10 minutes or until golden brown.
Here in the UK, the standard advice is to cook food until it has reached 70°C and maintained that temperature for 2 minutes. This is to keep you and your family safe!
How long can you keep Cheese and Onion Bakes in the fridge?
Once you’ve served this recipe, you’ll ideally need to eat it within 4 hours.

Hey Rhea, we haven’t tested this recipe without using egg but you could try a little milk to seal the Cheese and Onion Bakes, hope that helps!
