Your Slimming Essentials – The Weekly Pinch of Shopping 14.05
In this week’s Weekly Pinch of Shopping, we have found some products that are full of flavour and still slimming friendly! From a low calorie chicken tikka masala to a deliciously savoury salt and pepper basa fish fillet, we LOVE finding something that’s convenient and still tastes great.
We’re also loving the summery vibes of the fruity ice lollies, banana chips and lemony mini meringues we’ve found. For a bright and colourful dessert, try the lemon meringues in our Unicorn Eton Mess!
We’ve also got a number of different dietary requirements covered this week, with veggie chicken chunks that will make the perfect addition to a light stir fry, and deliciously crispy gluten free LEON chicken nuggets. The same tasty nuggets that are served at the restaurant chain, but you can enjoy them baked at home? Yes please!
We’re also bringing you refreshing Capri-Sun pouches that are full of extra multivitamin goodness at only 14 calories each. Pop them in the fridge for when you need a burst of tropical flavour, whatever the weather looks like outside!
We’ve given you a handy reminder of the Super 6 week this week; Aldi discounts a selection of fresh fruit and vegetables every fortnight, so we give you the rundown and inspiration to make the most of these budget ingredients.
Please remember that all prices are correct at the time of us writing this article and so they should be used as a guide only.

The Vegetarian Butcher Vegan What the Cluck – 101 calories per serving
For a lighter chicken alternative, The Vegetarian Butcher Vegan What the Cluck chicken chunks are a great choice.
Created by a vegetarian farmer with the goal of tasting better than meat, these strips are tender and juicy while remaining perfectly crispy on the outside. It couldn’t be simpler to cook too: pop in a hot pan and fry for 2-3 minutes each side until browned, and that’s it!
Because they’re made with soy, these strips are suitable for those following a vegetarian or vegan diet.
Add them to a lighter stir fry with your favourite vegetables, or allow them to take on all of the rich flavours of our Chicken, Shiitake Mushroom and Chilli Broth!
You can find The Vegetarian Butcher Vegan What the Cluck in Tesco for £2.75 per 160g pack.
Count on Us Chicken Tikka Masala and Rice – 340 calories per pack
If we’re pushed for time, we usually batch cook so we’ve always got a fresh, healthy dinner ready to go. Sometimes this isn’t possible, and for those times you can reach for this Count on Us Chicken Tikka Masala and Rice!
It’s full of high protein lean chicken in a lightly spiced curry sauce, with fragrant basmati rice on the side. Ideal to take to work or keep in the freezer to stop you reaching for the takeaway menu!
We love classic curries with our favourite Indian sides like Onion Bhajis! If you fancy making your own, our Chicken Tikka Masala Curry and Creamy Butter Chicken are both super simple and slimming friendly!
M&S/Ocado stocks this Count on Us Chicken Tikka Masala and Rice for £3 per pack.
The Tasty Catch Co Salt and Pepper Basa – 254 calories per fillet
Fish is a slimming essential: lean and light, and packed with vitamins and healthy omega oils. The Tasty Catch Co Salt and Pepper Basa is pre-coated in a light batter and dusted with a savoury salt and pepper flavouring.
The lightly spiced coating complements the flavour of the fish, and it can be cooked from frozen for ultimate convenience.
Aldi sells The Tasty Catch Co Salt and Pepper Basa for just £1.99 per 2-pack.
Bare Fruit Snacks Banana Chips – 96 calories per pack
Bananas with a twist! These Bare Fruit Snacks Banana Chips are made from 100% bananas. The bananas are baked until they have a delicious crunch, with absolutely nothing else added.
At only 96 calories a bag, we’ll be keeping some of these in the cupboard for snacking emergencies. We like these as a substitute for high calorie fried crisps as they are fat free with no added sugar or sweeteners: the natural sweetness of the banana is enough!
Bananas are high in fibre too, meaning these chips will help keep you feel fuller for longer. They’re also naturally gluten free and vegetarian. You can also find coconut and organic apple versions.
If you’re ‘bananas’ about bananas, try our smooth and indulgent Banana Cream Pudding!
Bare Fruit Snacks Banana Chips are available from Ocado and Sainsbury’s for around £1.40 (On offer at £1 at Sainsbury’s!)
Capri-Sun No Added Sugar Multivitamin Drink – 14 calories per drink
When the sun is shining, a refreshing pouch of Capri-Sun No Added Sugar Multivitamin Drink can hit the spot!
Suitable for children and adults alike, these drinks are full of the tropical flavours of kiwi, pineapple, passionfruit and lemon. They’re free from artificial colours and flavours, and suitable for those following a gluten free or vegan diet.
It’s worth having a box of these drinks chilled in the fridge, ready to grab when you need a cooling, fruity treat for only 14 calories each!
For a tropical twist on a classic salsa, we’ve used pineapple in our tangy Pineapple Salsa, it’s perfect for BBQs!
An 8-pack of Capri-Sun No Added Sugar Multivitamin Drink costs £2 from Tesco
LEON Gluten Free Chicken Nuggets – 245 calories per 1/3 pack
Fakeaways like these LEON nuggets are some of our favourite family dinners because everyone loves chicken nuggets! LEON Gluten Free Chicken Nuggets are tipped by the restaurant chain as “the golden nugget” because of their crispy, golden brown crumb.
They’re super crunchy, and gluten free. Made with tender British chicken breasts, these nuggets are ready to eat in only 20 minutes. Because they’re frozen too, they make an easy weeknight dinner, with no deep fried batter in sight.
For nuggets with a twist, try our Mexican Chicken Nuggets.
LEON Gluten Free Chicken Nuggets can be found in Sainsbury’s priced at £4 per 300g pack.
Barratt 6 Anglo Bubbly Ice Lollies – 60 calories per lolly
These round, pink Barratt 6 Anglo Bubbly Ice Lollies taste as good as they look! With a retro bubblegum flavour, these lollies bring back memories of some of our favourite childhood sweets.
The ice cream is smooth and sweet, making these an ideal choice for when the sun comes out and you find yourself reaching for something to cool down! They’re bright and colourful, and the perfect treat size for the whole family to enjoy.
They’re also suitable for vegetarians and only 60 calories each!
For a simple, no-cook dessert, try our Summer Berry Dessert.
Barratt 6 Anglo Bubbly Ice Lollies are on offer for £1.50 in Iceland (usually £2.00 per box of 6).
The Pantry Mini Lemon Meringues – 32 calories per 3 mini meringues
Meringues are essential in desserts from macaroons to Eton Mess, but mini ones are lower in calories than you might think! Three of these The Pantry Mini Lemon Meringues are light, fluffy and sweet for only 32 calories.
For a speedy dessert, sandwich a thin layer of lemon curd and a dollop of fat free yoghurt in between two of these zesty meringues. Or crumble and sprinkle over your favourite fruit and yoghurt breakfast for added texture and crunch. You can also get them in a plain variety – whether you crush them or eat them whole to satisfy your sweet craving, we think you’ll love them!
Try substituting the berry topping in our Raspberry and Blueberry Baked Cheesecake for fresh lemon slices and lemon meringues for a citrusy twist!
