We’ve long been fans of the The Saucy Fish Co chilled range, so we were pleased when they sent us some of their new frozen range to try out.

If you’re a regular follower of the site you’ll probably know that we like to put our own twist on things, which is exactly what we did with the frozen Smoked Haddock with Vintage Cheddar & Chive Sauce.

We thought we’d try something a bit different to the usual fish and sauce and vegetables.

This 1 Syn Smoked Haddock and Cheese Gratin is really quick and easy to prepare, and at only 1 Sys per portion (if you use half of one of your HEA per portion) it’s definitely worth giving it go.

How do you work out the Syns in this 1 Syn Smoked Haddock and Cheese Gratin?

The frozen Saucy Fish Co Smoked Haddock with a Vintage Cheddar & Chive Sauce is in the database at 1 Sys per portion, which is pretty good for a something that contains a cheese sauce.

To keep this 1 Syn Smoked Haddock and Cheese Gratin as low in Syns as possible we decided to use the cheese as part of our HEA allowances. This it will cost you half a HEA for each portion. However, if you don’t want to use your HEA then it will work out at an extra 3 Syns per portion, bringing the total to 4 Syns per portion.

What do I need to make this 1 Syn Smoked Haddock and Cheese Gratin?

The first thing you’ll need is a pack of The Saucy Fish Co Frozen Smoked Haddock with a Vintage Cheddar & Chive Sauce. You can find more info about it in this article.

Next thing you’ll need is a good masher for the potato.

One question that is asked quite often in our Facebook Group is ‘how do you make a fluffy, creamy mashed potato without adding and cream, butter or milk?’

Well here’s the answer….

You need one of these blenders with a masher attachment.

They really do make the creamiest, fluffiest mash without having to add anything that will increase the Syns.

How do I make this 1 Syn Smoked Haddock and Cheese Gratin?

Step 1

Peel the potatoes and chop roughly.

Step 2

Place in a pan of salted water, bring to the boil and cook until they are soft.

Step 3

Whilst waiting for the potatoes to cook remove the fish from the packaging.

Set the sauce sachet aside, then place the fish in the oven bag provided and cook at 180°C / 160°C (fan) for 24 minutes.

Step 4

Drain, then mash the potato, season and stir in the chopped chives.

Step 5

Heat the sauce sachet in a pan of simmering water for 4 minutes.

Step 6

Put the spinach in the bottom of an ovenproof dish, then place the cooked fish on top.

Step 7

Pour the heated sauce over the fish then pipe the potato around the outside, leaving a gap in the middle.

Step 8

Sprinkle the cheese in the gap and top with the chopped spring onion.

Step 9

Then either place under the grill or in a hot oven until the cheese is melted and the potato is golden brown.

INSTRUCTIONS
