Crumble is one of those classic desserts that just screams ‘comfort food’! Super hearty and really comforting, an Apple Crumble has to be one of our absolute favourite puds.

Our slimming friendly take on this tasty treat is just as satisfying and delicious as a ‘normal’ crumble, but without all of those pesky extra calories and Points.

This recipe is super versatile and if you’re not a fan of apples in your crumble, then you can easily swap them out for whichever fruit you’d prefer. Rhubarb, mixed berries or even pear all work really well so feel free to get creative!

If you’re going to use different fruits, then remember to check the nutritional values as these can vary depending on the fruit you choose!

What diets is this Apple Crumble suitable for?

This recipe is suitable if you’re gluten free as long as you swap out the following ingredients for gluten free versions;

  • Flour
  • Oats

You could also enjoy this Apple Crumble if you’re dairy free by using a dairy free reduced fat spread.

Do you need any special ingredients to make Apple Crumble?

We prefer to use a natural, granulated sweetener which weighs the same as sugar. They tend to taste a lot better and although they cost a little more, you don’t need as much as with the powdered type of sweetener.

There are various brands to look out for and Sukrin, Candarel Sugarly or Natvia are widely available in supermarkets or online.

We use a natural granulated sweetener like Sukrin in this dish which you can easily grab online from Amazon.

How many calories are in this Apple Crumble?

There are 75 calories in each portion of this Apple Crumble. This means it falls into our Everyday Light recipe category.

This recipe is perfect if you’re following a calorie controlled diet, and fits well with any one of the major diet plans such as Weight Watchers.

As a guide, an average man needs around 2,500kcal (10,500kJ) a day to maintain a healthy body weight. For an average woman, that figure is around 2,000kcal (8,400kJ) a day. Step 1

Preheat the oven to 160ºC. Cut the apple into small dice and place into the bottom of 4 individual, oven proof ramekins. Sprinkle the cinnamon and half the sweetener over the apples.

In a mixing bowl, add the flour, oats, reduced fat spread and the remaining half the sweetener. Rub between your fingers until it looks like bread crumbs.

Step 3

Top the apples with the crumble mixture and spray with low calorie cooking spray.

Bake in the oven for 25 minutes until golden and the apple is soft. Serve whilst hot with your choice of topping or sauce.

How do you know when this Apple Crumble is cooked?

You should cook this Apple Crumble until the top is golden and the apples are tender which should take around 30 minutes in the oven.

Standard advice here in the UK is to cook food until it has reached 70°C and stayed at that temperature for 2 minutes. This is to keep your family safe.

How long can you keep this Apple Crumble in the fridge?

Once you’ve served it, ideally you should eat this dish within 4 hours.

If you allow any left overs to cool, make sure to refrigerate in a container with a lid and chill. You can keep leftovers of Apple Crumble in the fridge for approximately 3 days or so.

Can I freeze this Apple Crumble?

Yes you can! This recipe can be frozen, but please remember to do the following;

  • Freeze it as soon as it is cold enough.
  • Use a container or bag that is suitable for freezing.

Don’t forget to add a label with what it is, and on what date you put it in the freezer!

How do I reheat Apple Crumble?

From chilled: Place in a microwave proof container with loosely fitting lid and heat for 4-7 minutes until piping hot.

From frozen: Allow to defrost, and heat covered in the microwave for 3-5 minutes then leave to stand for a minute. Cook for a further 3-5 minutes until piping hot.

  • 200 g cooking apples peeled and cored
  • 22 g porridge oats
  • 19 g self raising flour
  • 2 tsp reduced fat spread
  • 3 tbsp granulated sweetener
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • low calorie cooking spray

I didn’t have any ramekins for this recipe so I used a dish.
However in future I want to make them in ramekins, so I ordered some from Amazon.
However they’re MINISCULE.
Are there different sizes? What size did you use?

Hello! I made these Apple Crumbles and they are absolutely delicious. I’m 12 and I love baking. While my parents are on a diet I thought I’d make these. They are amazing. Although I would recommend if you are using bigger ramekins, like me, maybe make two or one and a half of everything especially the crumble part. Other than that so easy to make and it has stuff you can buy cheap and you can find everywhere! This is definitely something to make if you want a low calorie treat! 🙂
