Custard is a classic dessert sauce and it’s so easy to make from scratch! Our version is great if you’re counting calories or following a plan like Weight Watchers.

In our opinion, no pudding is complete without some custard, but custard from a packet or carton can often be high in calories and Points. You might think it’s really complicated to make your own custard, but this recipe is really simple and tastes even better than any ready made or powdered version!

If you like your custard super thick then just add an extra tablespoon of cornflour to the egg mix – remember to adjust the calories accordingly though!

How many calories are in this Custard?

Step 1

Place the milk into a large saucepan. Heat on the hob on a moderate heat until it just starts to steam. Careful not to let the milk boil or burn on the bottom of the pan.

Step 2

While the milk heats, place all of the other ingredients into a jug and mix thoroughly to form a smooth paste.

Step 3

Once the milk is steaming, pour into the jug and mix quickly with the eggs and other ingredients. Pour back into the saucepan.

Step 4

Return the saucepan to a moderate heat and slowly stir the custard using a whisk. The custard will start to thicken gradually – this will take 5-10 minutes. Resist the urge to turn the heat up high as this can cause the custard to split or burn on the bottom of the pan, and make sure you continue to stir with the whisk. Once the custard gently started to “blip” and bubble, the custard is ready!

Leave to stand for a minute, then serve!

How do you know when this Custard is cooked?

You’ll need to cook this Custard for around 15 minutes or until it has thickened and started to gently ‘blip’ and bubble.

Standard advice here in the UK is to cook food until it has reached 70°C and stayed at that temperature for 2 minutes. This is to keep your family safe.

  • 500 ml skimmed milk
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp cornflour
  • 4 tbsp granulated sweetener

Instructions

Can i store this safely in the fridge and if so, how long does it last if I don’t consume it all at once

    Hi Sam, you can keep any leftover custard in a container with a lid in the fridge for approximately 3 days. Please refer to the NHS guidelines on storing and reheating food HERE. Hope that helps!

      At last I have found the arrow to change the servings! It is above the recipe card at the bottom of the recipe. I tried putting it in search and nothing came up. I read it was next to the calories but looked at the figures at the beginning of the recipe and there was nothing. I think this is an important bit of information as in my case I only cook for 1/2 people.

    Hi Georgia, We use a granulated sweetener that is crunchy and weighs like for like with sugar. Powdered sweeteners don’t work as well and the weight would need to be adjusted as you would need a lot less than we state in our recipes. Will this ‘set’ like the powder custard to put on a trifle?

    Hi Nikki, we don’t think this Custard recipe will set as it is to use for a trifle however if you use 2 tbsp of cornflour instead of 1 it should work great!
