Long gone are the days of sickly-sweet school dinner crumble that’s loaded with sugar. We’ve created an indulgent, warming Pear and Ginger Crumble that satisfies your dessert craving but is still slimming friendly.

Packed full of juicy pears and topped with a light, oaty crumble, this dish is comforting and tasty with the right amount of sweetness: you won’t believe it’s low calorie when you taste it! Try it with a dollop of low-fat Greek yoghurt or a few spoonfuls of custard.

We’ve used brown granulated sweetener in this recipe, which may be something you’ve not used before, but we promise it’s worth it! It’s got a much more ‘sugary’ texture than typical powdered sweetener, which makes it ideal for mixing into crumbles.

We’ve served in individual ramekins for easy portioning, but you could bake in one larger dish if you’d prefer. This dish is ready on the table in 30 minutes, so it’s the perfect choice for a weeknight or when you need a pud in a pinch!

Preheat the oven to 180ºC.

Put the pears in a saucepan along with the water, lemon juice, grated ginger and 1tbsp of sweetener, bring to the boil and cook over a medium heat for 5 minutes, until the pears are soft and the liquid has turned syrupy.

While the pears cook, put the flour in a mixing bowl and rub in the reduced fat spread until it resembles breadcrumbs.

Stir in the oats, ginger snaps and the remaining sweetener.

Divide the pear between the ramekins and scatter the crumble on top of the pears. Place the ramekins on a baking sheet and bake in the oven for 15 minutes until the top is golden.

Ingredients

  • 4 pears peeled and cut into 1.5cm chunks
  • 2 tbsp brown granulated sweetener
  • ½ lemon juice only
  • 25 g plain flour
  • 20 g oats
  • 15 g reduced fat spread
  • 1 cm piece of root ginger peeled and grated
  • 2 ginger snap biscuits roughly crushed
  • 60 ml water

Can you use pears in fruit juice for this recipe please?

    Hi Valerie, yes you can use tinned pears you may need to alter the calories accordingly, hope that helps!
