TikTok has started lots of food trends recently – and some of them are better than others! These Air Fryer Accordion Potatoes might be a flash in the pan, but there’s no denying that the golden bites come with a satisfying crunch.
You only need some spuds and a few seasonings to make these, and the magic is all in the preparation. A good quality, sharp knife is your best friend for this, as you’ll need to slice the potatoes into rectangles, before cutting them in a precise pattern until they open up like an accordion.
The beauty of this is that there’s lots of surface area to cover with your choice of flavouring. We’ve kept things simple with garlic, salt and pepper, but you can get creative with other combinations!
Psst…when you make these you’ll find that there are offcuts of potato that you won’t want to waste. Box up the odds and ends in a freezer-safe container to turn into wedges or oven chips at a later date.
If you don’t have an air fryer, we have a separate oven method for Accordion Potatoes right here.

These Air Fryer Accordion Potatoes are perfect if you’re following a calorie controlled diet, and fits well with any one of the major diet plans such as Weight Watchers.
As a guide, an average man needs around 2,500kcal (10,500kJ) a day to maintain a healthy body weight. For an average woman, that figure is around 2,000kcal (8,400kJ) a day. Obviously, if your goal is to lose weight then you might want to adjust these slightly! You can read more about these recommendations on the NHS website.
Step 1
Preheat the air fryer to 180°C.
Step 2
Square off your potatoes by cutting off the sides until you are left with a rectangle. If you are using a large potato rather than a few small ones cut this rectangle into smaller pieces, around 2.5cm x 1.5cm.
Step 3
Take a sharp knife and carefully cut diagonal lines across the large side of the potato rectangle. They should be 3-4 millimetres apart and reach halfway through the thickness of the potato – be careful not to cut deeper than halfway.
Step 4
Flip the potato over and cut horizontal lines across the length of the opposite side. They should also be around 3-4 millimetres apart and reach halfway through the thickness of the potato. Now when you gently pull the two ends of the potato it should stretch like an accordion! If it doesn’t, you may need to go over some of your cuts to make them a little deeper.
Step 5
Once you have cut all your potatoes, spray them well with low-calorie cooking spray. Try to stretch them a little while you do this so it gets into the cuts.
Step 6
Sprinkle over your garlic granules, salt and pepper. Again, try to get the seasonings into the cuts of the potato if you can!
Step 7
Place the potatoes into the air fryer for 20 minutes. Make sure to check them halfway as air fryers can vary!
Step 8
Once ready, serve with a main of your choice.
What could I serve with these Air Fryer Accordion Potatoes?
You can serve this recipe alongside any meals you would ordinarily eat with potatoes! Add a crunch on the side of any of these classic dinner recipes:
How do you know when Air Fryer Accordion Potatoes are cooked?
You’ll need to cook these Air Fryer Accordion Potatoes for around 20 minutes, until they’re golden and really crispy.
Here in the UK, the standard advice is to cook food until it has reached 70°C and maintained that temperature for 2 minutes. This is to keep you and your family safe!
How long can you keep Air Fryer Accordion Potatoes in the fridge?
We’d recommend cooking these potatoes fresh and eating them right away – they’ll be so much crispier straight out of the air fryer.
If you do have leftovers that you want to store, let them cool and place them in the fridge in a container with a lid. You can keep leftover Air Fryer Accordion Potatoes in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Can I freeze Air Fryer Accordion Potatoes?
We wouldn’t recommend freezing Air Fryer Accordion Potatoes, since they are far tastier and crispier when they are freshly made. They are safe to freeze if you don’t mind that they won’t be as crispy when reheated. Just remember to:
- Freeze as soon as they are cold enough.
- Use a container or bag that is suitable for freezing.
- Add a label and include the date you put it in the freezer!
Don’t forget you can also freeze the odds and ends of potato that were discarded during the preparation of this recipe. To prevent waste, they can be frozen and used for chips or wedges at a later date.
How do I reheat Air Fryer Accordion Potatoes?
Please bear in mind that these potatoes will be crispiest when they are freshly made and cooked from scratch. If you have chilled or frozen any leftovers, you can reheat them following the instructions below:
From chilled: Place in a moderate oven or air fryer and reheat until piping hot.
From frozen: Allow to defrost overnight and reheat from chilled.
