Our Cheese, Onion and Potato Pie is comfort food at its finest and by replacing high calorie shortcrust pastry with filo, this is a dish that you can enjoy even if you’re counting calories or following a plan like Weight Watchers.

We’ve used Henderson’s Relish in this recipe to keep it vegetarian, but you can use any relish that you like or even some Worcestershire sauce instead – you’ll just need to remember to adjust the nutritional information accordingly!

We love ours served up with a mixed salad for a tasty, comforting dinner that’s also low on calories and Points!

Use a Yorkshire pudding pan to make individual pies it makes it easier to portion out and gives you lunch or freezing options.

I did it in a loose bottomed spring-form cake tin, made it so much easier for dishing up!

Portion into 4 and add veg/beans to make a main meal.
I had some mushrooms that needed to be used so I added them as a side to bulk up this amazing low calorie tasty pie.

If I have leftover bacon medallions, peppers or other veg in the fridge I will add them in to the mix

How many calories are in this Cheese, Onion and Potato Pie?

While the potatoes are cooking, spray a frying pan with low calorie cooking spray and sauté the onions over a medium to low heat, until they are soft and a golden brown colour. This can take up to 15 minutes. Don’t be persuaded to increase the heat to speed this up as the slow cooking caramelises the onions and develops the flavour.

When the potatoes are cooked, drain and place in a bowl. Roughly mash them with a fork – it’s fine to have some pieces remaining.

Add the grated cheese (reserving a handful to top the pie), onions, mustard and garlic granules and the Henderson’s Relish.

Beat the egg, add to the potato and cheese mixture and mix thoroughly.

Step 6

Spray a deep pie dish with low calorie cooking spray. A metal dish is best for this, as it helps to evenly cook the bottom.

Step 7

Spray each sheet of filo pastry with low calorie cooking spray, and line the pie dish, leaving 3-4 cm over the edge of the dish.

Step 8

Spread the filling evenly into the pie dish.

Scrunch up the filo around the edge and sprinkle the remaining cheese over the potato mixture.

How do you know when this Cheese, Onion and Potato Pie is cooked?

You should cook your Cheese, Onion and Potato Pie in the oven for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown and firm.

Standard advice here in the UK is to cook food until it has reached 70°C and stayed at that temperature for 2 minutes. This is to keep your family safe.

Ingredients

  • 80 g filo pastry 4 sheets
  • 600 g potatoes peeled and cut into small chunks
  • 240 g reduced fat mature cheddar grated
  • 300 g onions diced
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp mustard powder
  • 1 tsp garlic granules
  • 2 tsp Henderson's Relish or Worcestershire sauce
  • salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
  • low calorie cooking spray

    Hey Sam, the egg is used to bind the filling and make it a little more solid, so it’s easier to cut. If you leave the egg out it may be a little crumbly and fall apart but it won’t affect the flavour. Hope that helps!

How would I cook this in a ninja foodie please?

    Hi Sam
    We’ve not cooked this in a Ninja so we can’t really say if it would work or not. Filo pastry is very thin so it cooks quickly. You may find the pastry overcooks before the filling is done. You could refer to your Ninja manual, but it would be a case of trial and error I’m afraid. If you decide to try it, please let us know how you get on 🙂

    Hi Andrea. You can use puff pastry if you prefer. Check the packet for cooking instructions as they will vary to the filo. Also, make sure you account for any change in the nutritional values if they are important to you.

    Hi Sia, I think you have reduced the serving size down from 6 to 2 people? So an average egg once beaten is about 3 tbsp so it’s probably easier to measure it as 1tbsp of beaten egg if you are making the pie for 2. Hope that helps!
