Cheesy Chips and Gravy is an absolute staple in Northern chippys in the UK and it’s one of our all-time favourite comfort foods! It’s not just UK chip shops that you can find this tasty treat in, as the Canadian dish ‘poutine’ is similar but uses cheese curds instead of grated cheese.
This dish is absolutely perfect for a cosy weekend treat and is just the thing to warm you up on a chilly evening. Piping hot, rich gravy, gooey, melted cheese and crisp, golden chips? It really doesn’t get much better than that!
We’ve cooked our chips in the oven, but if you’d prefer to use an airfryer then this is actually a much quicker method! Cooking in the airfryer means that your chips will only take 20 minutes to cook, as opposed to 40-45 in the oven.
For the authentic chippy experience, serve your Cheesy Chips and Gravy with some fish, or even in a wholemeal roll – it sounds strange, but trust us, it’s delish!!
What diets are these Cheesy Chips and Gravy suitable for?
This recipe can be made suitable for vegetarian diets by using vegetable stock pots.
It can also be made suitable for gluten free diets as long as your stock pots are gluten free (Lots of brands are, but make sure you double check to be sure!).
Please make sure to double or triple check all of your ingredients if you’re cooking for people with allergies.

Step 1
Preheat the oven to 180ºC.
Step 2
Spray the chips with low calorie cooking spray and toss them in the onion salt.
Step 3
Scatter on a baking sheet and cook in the oven for 40-45 minutes, turning halfway through until the centre of the chips are soft and they’re crisp and golden on the outside.
Step 4
Meanwhile, make the gravy. Put all of the ingredients except the gravy browning in a saucepan, add 600ml of water and bring to a boil.
Step 5
Reduce the heat and simmer for 25 minutes.
Step 6
When the carrots and potatoes are soft, blitz with a hand blender. Add a couple of drops of gravy browning if required. If the gravy is too thick then add a little water until it reaches a consistency you are happy with. Keep hot until the chips are cooked.
Step 7
Mix the grated cheddar and mozzarella together.
Step 8
When the chips are cooked, divide between 2 warmed bowls. Sprinkle half the cheese mix over, smother with the hot gravy, then sprinkle over the rest of the cheese. The heat from the gravy will melt the cheese.
Step 9
Serve and enjoy!
