It’s very much a personal preference as to what herbs and spices you use for this recipe.
If you don’t have any of the ingredients in the Chicken Gyros Kebabs recipe below, then just substitute with what ever you like.
Paprika, Cumin, Ras El Hanout, Curry powder, Garam Masala all work really well, and you can pick all of these up from the supermarket.
Whether you choose to cook these on a barbecue or in the oven, you’ll need some good quality skewers like these from Amazon.
We prefer to use chicken thighs for these kebabs. Chicken thighs are far juicier than Chicken breast, don’t dry out and are generally far more forgiving.
They’re also easier to put together on a skewer, and are usually pretty cheap too!
If you want to save some time, then use Chicken Thigh fillets, that already have the skin and bones removed, otherwise removing them can be a little bit of a faff. Not good if you’re in a rush to get dinner on the table!

I used this as a marinade for chicken breast fillet and baked in the oven on a flat tray. Absolutely delicious and not dry at all. This will be a regular on my menu
HollyWednesday 14th July 2021
Hey Julie, thanks so much for your message. Using this recipe on chicken breasts sounds great!

Hi – is it fat free natural yoghurt – the recipe doesn’t specifically say. Thanks.
HollyMonday 28th June 2021
Hey Leanneh, thanks for your message I have updated the recipe to specify fat free natural yoghurt.
JordanThursday 3rd June 2021
Can this be cooked without skewers and if so how long?
HollyFriday 4th June 2021
Hey Jordan, yes you could just cook the thighs with the marinade. Place onto a baking tray for 30-40 minutes test that the chicken thighs are cooked through and no pinkness remains. Hope that helps
Georgie ScotneyThursday 27th May 2021
Can I cook without the yogurt ? Does it take less time or?
Thank you
HollyFriday 4th June 2021
Hey Georgie, without the yoghurt this would be more of a spice rub rather than a marinade. It will still work fine and would still require the same cooking time. Hope that helps!

Can this recipe work with chicken breast
HollyTuesday 6th April 2021
Hey Ashleigh, We prefer to use chicken thighs for these kebabs as they are far juicier than Chicken breast and don’t dry out whilst cooking. You can use breast but cook until the juices of the meat run clear, and the meat is completely cooked through. Hope that helps!

JodieWednesday 12th August 2020
Hi, does the chicken not dry out in the oven?
HollyThursday 13th August 2020
Hi Jodie, as the chicken is tightly packed on the skewers it won’t dry out during cooking in the oven. Hope that helps!

If I wanted to use Ras El Hanout in the marinade as I’ve never tried it before, do I need to take out the Garam Masala and/or the curry powder? I’m intrigued to see what it’s like so would welcome a suggestion.
KayTuesday 20th February 2018
Hi Dave,
You could use the Ras El Hanout in place of the curry powder. Enjoy!
